IMO there's a strong likelihood he'll still be here when the transfer window shuts. Doesn't sound like Palace are serious about the kind of money we're looking for.

Fingers crossed!

Really don't think you can use the Messi comparison.

Why? Barca didn’t want/need to sell him so you tell suitors ok you want him you pay silly money, likewise we don’t need to sell Downey and it will be detrimental to our team to do so, therefore we put an unrealistic price tag on him.

I see the comparison as very relevant

There's very little in it for us to accept a low ball bid when we've got more or less no room under the wage cap.

Cresswell probably went a bit cheap, however I think we were pretty unfortunate on that as we sold him very early in the window (which was sensible on the face of it to allow us time to strengthen on the back of it) and transfer fees then exploded during that window

Otherwise the likes of Wickham, Mings, Waghorn and Webster have generally gone for decent sums, and there’s evidence too from those we haven’t sold (eg. McGoldrick) that we don’t just sell at the drop of a hat

Even Cresswell I wouldn't say went cheap, certainly seemed a good fee for him at the time. With all the various top ups I'm sure we ended up getting over £6m from the deal, which at the time for a 24/25 year old Championship left back was good money.

No, Barca can afford to turn down £600m, not only that, no one would pay that, which is why he hasn't gone. Add the fact that we have huge debt, no gate receipts, no TV money which is why we would accept £4m (which is chicken feed for PL clubs) then there is no comparison.

Oh and if the Athletic are right, then he wants to go to boot.

I'd say if we got £4m it would be good business. We have more than ample cover in CM and i wouldn't begrudge Downes the move.

No great surprise that players want out, although with PL interest it will always turn your head.

Palace are currently massively low balling us though, need to get at least £4m for him plus add ons

Add ons will be the biggest thing here IMO.

Can't see us getting more than £2.5 mil as an initial fee. Palace say under £2 mil and we're looking for around £4 mil so imagine they will come to some sort of compromise, which is why the add ons will be important.

Sell on fee is probably the most lucrative but it depends on whether playing for Palace, a lower mid-table Premier club who'll maybe go down and come back up again, is Downes' ceiling or could he play higher? Jury's out on that one.

Don't think add ons for appearances etc are too valuable, but could bump the overall deal up in years to come.

Living in cloud cuckoo land if you think there is much difference between the two statements.

Simple wording to me. Hopefully is that he is hopeful to stay here. Just saying he’s dedicated but leaving the door open at least doesn’t lead to that assumption.

Maybe I should be far more cynical and far less trusting when it comes to footballers, admittedly.

By that token there’s not really much in it for us in accepting a high offer either for that matter.

But, once someone hands in a transfer request, it changes the dynamics completely and nullifies some of the “selling” clubs bargaining power.

Cresswell.

Cresswell.

Disagree. £3.75m up front with add ons taking it up over £6m was decent for a Championship full back of his age. Had we sold him a year later we'd likely have got a lot more but at the time we sold him that was decent business.

I think more generally there's always been a need to sell players over time to cover losses and give the manager a little leeway in the budget.

But Evans is probably also right to say that we don't need to sell anyone in particular, at any time or at any price.

We want £8m - there doesn't seem much incentive at selling for less than £4/5m upfront (if at all).

For the sake of the club's future I hope no-one in management is thinking like this. Since Downes is under contract and we don't need to sell then we tell him and Palace the price we'll take, the deadline we'll take it by and have it as non-negotiable.

He's under contract, but it's not quite the same as slavery. What happens if the player wants to buy himself out (with money loaned by Palace, perhaps)?

In the Championship when we were competing with clubs whose wage bills were 4/5 times our revenue, sure. In League One, where we're banned from spending even half our revenue on players? I can't see how we'd have substantial losses to cover.

Still looking in your post/reply where we have said we need to sell?

That’s right because we haven’t, likewise as with your statement of nobody paying £700m for Messi or if they wanted him that badly they would pay it then surely if as has been said £4m is small change to PL clubs then we should hold out for £10m which is probably over the odds for a league 1 midfielder but as I said we don’t NEED to sell
