Prospects that maybe are seen as better and more deserving of higher wages.

It's amazing how much a large of amount of supporters are bemoaning every academy player that leaves the club. It's how football is.

On the same morning we learn how badly Evans ownership continued to ruin the club financially... we now see people moaning we arent spending 'just a few hundred more' on a specific player when there many very similar to Gibbs coming through.

He had an offer. A good offer. His agent turned it down.

We and Gibbs move on.

I don't think I've seen anyone bemoaning a single non-first-team academy player leaving the club other than this one?

Knight had left before them so can’t rally include him - but would probably say below Dozz and Nydam, similar to Downes and a fair way ahead of El Miz and Dobra

These threads are pretty depressing when you see how people react to situations they know very little about in an industry that sees people handled with utter ruthlessness from before they have even started puberty

Fair point with Knight but wondered how Gibbs compared at 15/16 I get they all change significantly at different times in development though

I find the academy systems scandalous in the way they treat kids, it will never be undone now though due to the commercial greed in football.

As we've seen previously with our cup winning team being a brilliant youth player doesn't always transfer well

Gibbs appeared for first team. So be counts. As without his involvement in and around the first team his release would barely be mentioned.

He's leaving because the club has been upturned and many new players are coming in so there are going to be little chances for him (and other youngsters) to come through. He's also probably seen Dobra (who plays in a similar position) and El-Mizouni being pushed aside by Lambert previously.

It would be to any of us who watched the Youth Cup run. He’s a talent for sure and he’s left the club. I’m not entirely sure what’s positive about that.

At what point does higher wages = being held to ransom and destabilising your whole player wage structure for what is essentially a prospect?

We just don’t know what the reasoning is behind him going. The only thing I can conclude is that had he wanted to stay, he would have done.

There's limits to "had he wanted to stay, he would have done", isn't there? If we offer uncompetitive terms to every youngster with prospects, under the expectation that "anyone who wants to stay, will do", we'll lose pretty much all of them.

That's a real shame as I know he was very highly rated at the club, think there will be a lot of unhappy people over this (not aimed at Gibbs, I may add).

As others have pointed out, just makes you think what is the point of the academy. Whilst of course the short term aim is promotion, we still need a pathway for the better talents (Gibbs is certainly one of those) to make the step up.

On a lighter note, El Miz seems to be impressing so far, so hopefully he'll get a good shot at it next season.

Well that's just not true. Gibbs is seriously highly rated at the club, that is a fact. It's a massive shame to lose him.

There isnt a positive. But it's not the end of the world hes just 1 of a line of youngsters who will comes through or eave the club.

Theres a mixture of desires for ITFC it seems and some mixed wishes..

Sound financials... but spend more just because he asked for it.
No long term plan it seems... we must get promoted this season forget anything else

It's a simple case the first thought is get out of this league and sort the clubs finances whilst doing so.

After than and during that.. put plans in place for the academy going forwards.. that means for years to come not the next month.

You have to question the point of an academy then.

Young players coming through give us an identity - it doesn’t always work but it’s a shame in this case he won’t be given a chance.

I believe Klug said that Gibbs is one of the best he has ever worked with - which makes me worried that the club might have surrendered too soon. I hope we haven't given away what could have been our 'Maddison' and potentially bankrolled a promotion push.

Why stop at £50 a week? Shouldn't every player in the academy just be at the club out of pure love?

I don't know how to view this.

At 18, if he's good enough, he's old enough right?

So we've brought in Penney as a left back, which is the position Gibbs plays, so whilst Penney isn't as young, he has plenty of years in him, in which case...

Gibbs has to oust Penney from the first team picture immediately and already hasn't had much first team involvement, so knows his chances are slim, unless him staying and doing a Dobra (fight for place) sent out a big message, his options are going to be pretty slim.

Cook won't just guarantee football for anyone, and I mean anyone, as proven.

I think Gibbs will go to a larger club, get a better package financially, but ultimately it's a toss of a coin as to whether he'll play at a higher level or not later on. I sincerely hope it's the latter.

If he genuinely felt he's better than Penney (if I were a player, i'd be at training and weighing that up immediately) I'd take my deal, prove my worth and then get an improvement later on.

Players do get improvements if they start to show promise, clubs are quick to upgrade contracts when things are obvious.

That’s the point isn’t it. We wanted to keep him but not enough. I find it very strange that we let somebody go when the difference would have been peanuts.

You’re assuming it’s about money. But reports are that it’s about his place in the 1st team squad, which is quite a different thing. None of us know at the moment. If it’s money then it’s a bit silly not paying a bit extra, but if it’s about other things then we have to stand our ground. It will come out in the wash!

Youngsters do get chances - and the best become regulars in the first team (or are sold). If they thought he was good enough, they'd have kept him. They offered what they thought he was worth and that's that.

They're not going to let a very good player walk away for nothing if they can help it. It just doesn't make any sense.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I can only go on what a few of you guys who often know a little more than I do are saying! If it’s right that his agent is demanding a place in the first team squad that’s unacceptable. What we don’t know is if the club just made a point blank refusal or whether they offered a pathway of progress for him. If they didn’t then that is disappointing, especially when it’s almost certain that other clubs will have done so.

Either way it’s disappointing and smacks of an unhelpful agent.

Think that’s a bit simplistic. None of us really know the ins and outs, it could just as easily be a scenario where other clubs are offering more but he’s let it be known that he’d like to stay at Ipswich if there are some assurances that he’d have opportunities to progress, which is entirely reasonable

I think that ultimately, any time we lose a youngster that is wanted by the best clubs in the country it has to go down as a bad result for the club, regardless of the ins and outs. And therefore not unreasonable to question if we could have done more to keep him, particularly when it’s known that they wanted to stay

Highlighting crass stupidity since sometime around 2010

How talented is this kid really? I’m not saying he’s not, I’ve not seen him play, but at 18 he’s made one paltry appearance in the EFL cup. People citing Maddison etc, these players all had a decent amount of league appearances at that age.

Obviously we had a clown managing us so can’t really trust his judgement, but you have to feel if he was a real gem he would be in and around the first team more. Just speculating of course, he could turn out to be an exceptional player who we regret losing.
