It was totally wrong to make the accusations which were made and I didn't get a particularly contrite or respectful response when I put the matter to Herbivore. I've thought about it overnight and I think the issue is significant enough for a ban. Driving a long-time poster off the forum with an unnecessary, inflammatory and potentially libellous claim does rather cross a line. |
I'm glad you made the point about the "unnecessary, inflammatory and potentially libellous (false) claim", as I do think a distinction needs to be made between that kind of extremely serious accusation posted out of sheer malice & without any evidence or provocation; and "heat of the argument" jibes and insults that are quite often seen. Some people are known by their usernames on here to non-member friends/rellies irl who read the site, so for them to read the character assassinations full of made-up stuff a handful on here have posted for reasons best known to themselves over the years, is distressing.
Having said that, the way some people regularly chuck in 'needling' terms like "sociopath" when they can't win others round to their p.o.v. via legitimate debate in arguments, esp. when they piously subscribe to the regular, excellently supportive mental health threads on here, is unacceptable & hypocritical. They seem to forget that deliberately goading others with abuse they know to be untrue, is bound to cause stress at the very least.

Quite agree. Almost any subject from Covid to the economy, Ipswich Town to bands of the 80s needs specialist insight and evidence to fully comprehend. So when we’re trading thoughts on here people need to understand there is an exchange rate* for ideas and opinions.
1 expert and peer-reviewed analysis = 10 fact-based opinions = 1 million hot takes.
*The above exchange rate is a hot take.
On a more serious note, I always think one of the bigger failings of education is that we don’t really focus on how to think and form our views (empiricism, critical analysis, trustworthy sources etc.). Which is criminal when we know more and more how fallible the brain is and how our perceptions of reality are often just that ... subjective and sometimes even completely false perceptions. For anyone who hasn’t listened to it, the current Think with Pinker podcast series is a great starting point. | |

You don't half talk sense Ryorry. I wonder what is going on 'behind the screen' in many cases on here, and can't help but sympathise with some who seemingly need to try and 'win' arguments, that are often just opinion. Perhaps its indicative of deep rooted insecurity, as some seem utterly incapable of being civil and communicating with others in a grown up manner. It's remarkable of adults really, I wish them all well nonetheless.
