Signed short term deal at Northampton. Christ he was appalling when he was here. Stunk the place out.

Another one for your list - Alex Henshall, signed from Man City.

Yes that was the chap, City thought it was a coup getting him to cross the city then he signed for us exciting youngster with top pedigree. Now plying his trade at Wantage Town

Matheson's career is a weird one. Looked a very handy player in League One at age 16, such that a Premier League team came and signed him. England U17 and U18 international. Looked good in his first game for us, iffy in his second, never seen again.

He's now 20 and his last league action was getting relegated to the National League with Scunthorpe.

Bit harsh on Parrott, he looked (and looks) like a striker who just doesn't know how to regularly score in men's football but usually put a shift in I thought.

I couldn’t stand Parrott. I was excited when he signed as Spurs had high hopes for him, looked like he had the talent but seemed to cut such a dejected, almost petulant figure on the pitch for us. He was part of such a dark era though to be fair, as I say he must’ve questioned what he had walked into. Joins, club is a mess and supporters protesting, Lambert gets sacked a few weeks later, then basically has to be caught up in the Paul Cook class of demolition. Not the best environment for him.

Bree was okay, harsh to lump him in with the rest.

Fair point, Bree did reasonable well but at the time he signed I was naively hoping/expecting us to splash out to avoid relegation and the arrival of a steady right back was underwhelming.

I seem to recall the ‘local mate’ was the son of former world snooker champion Dennis Taylor. Also, he was stopped in the town centre, near the bus station, after ignoring the fact that traffic was not permitted beyond a specific point.

Yes, Croft's pal was the son of former World Snooker champion Dennis Taylor. Damien Taylor was an assistant golf pro at Accrington Golf Club & Dennis had lived in the area for umpteen years & was a Rovers fan.

That's one. But think there was another. Fredrick or something. It was either man City or Liverpool. Think the player went abroad after our spell.

The number of players who have flitted in & out of Ipswich Town in recent years is mind-boggling, particularly the large number who have made next to know impact.
Last season, we had 7 loanees, of whom 3 were actually decent, which was an above average success rate. Last season we also released or sold 26 professionals, of whom only a handful attracted any sort of fee. Absolutely mind boggling, but a product of having 3 permanent managers in less than a calendar year.

The amount of money spaffed on utter dross could have bought us a good team, top academy funding or meant we didn’t need to sell our best players. All with hindsight of course.

Not just the loans but the various one season wonders that did nothing Ellington, Ebanks Blake, Best. Then the Jan edditons becaue we 'just need a little bit of help", Ben Pringle, Paul Green. Finally the arrived to greatnfanfare and did nothings, Moshni, Wordsworth, Verseli (only one to have any kind of decent career), that winger from Man City who's name I forgot (who they'd nicked from Utd). Oh and the what were thinking, Piotr Kamil Malarczyk, Balint Banjer.

I think even taking the above out there is still a whole squad of players from the last 15 years I can't even recall

Add to Ellington, Ebanks-Blake and Best in the list of "Strikers we hoped would be good, probably were on decent wages, and left us underwhelmed":

Rory Fallon

There was another one who may have been a short term contract or loan, was tall and lanky, had floppy hair, (looked like a lightweight Jon Stead (who was "OK" in terms of meeting our expectations and therefore not a candidate for this list)) and couldn't win a single challenge against any Central Defender:

What was his name?

Having looked through our squads of the past few years, it was Oliver Hawkins.

6 foot 6 and somehow lacked the ability to win headers, as I remember him. Is that unfair?

Wouldn’t surprise me. His attitude stank.

I had to laugh once when we were 1-0 down with a few minutes left. Someone goes to get the ball to take a throw in and he just turned his back, shoulders sloped down and walked off like a stroppy teenager. Had no urgency and zero interest in helping the team. Did sympathise with the circumstances but he just looked like he did not want to be here for the most part.

Fortunately, I have little recollection of any of them - Bennetts probably the most remembered of that group.

I barely remember Bennetts, it feels like years ago, was he any good?

If I remember rightly, people were hoping we could sign him but BMG had spent quite a lot on him so it was unlikely

Was he a rare bright side in that season?

It all stemmed from Lamberts eye watering ineptitude. He might have been a dab hand at getting the VCR going with his me at Celtic and Dortmund tapes, but he didn’t know a team from a teapot. Loans, freebies, crocks, pensioners - want a handout? Ipswich is the place. Hobble along, get your training kit and disappear amongst 40+ deadbeats (with the odd exception obviously) and pick up your dough. Nobody cares, easy money..

No wonder Cook went bananas. Shame the job was too big for him, though tbf he did know a player when he saw one and did a lot of the hoofing out.

As has been said, it all goes back to 2010 and Evans. He rotted the club out from top to bottom.

It's reassuring to know I wasn't the only one that thought he was crap for us. I know he was just a kid, but given his reputation I expected much more than we saw.
