Do you know the difference between space and underwater?

Those people who a lost near the Titantic site on 15:54 - Jun 20 by blueasfook | I worked on building Trident submarines. And yes, very cramped - even the bigger boats, and I certainly wouldn't want to go to sea in one for 3 months at a time. Would drive me nuts. As a junior rating on board, you share a bunk space with 8 other guys. |
Yikes - eight?! 😱 Do you have a choice not to go on subs if you join the RN? I imagine it might put quite a few off. What part of the build were you on? I find construction & engineering docus absolutely fascinating, esp the ones on subs, ships & bridges. C27 'Yesterday' or Quest had a fairly recent one on Trident, I remember the miles of elec cabling!

When I was a kid I went on the 'Submarine Voyage' ride at Disneyland, and even as an 11 year old, I knew I never wanted to go in that type of vessel again.

Yes you have a choice to sign up for Submarine duty (not forced). Submariners are generally better paid though. I worked on the electrical installations so that would happen during the fitting out phase of the build basically. Yes absolutely thousands of miles of cabling go into a submarine. All high spec stuff as well. Some of the specialist cabling for certain systems is manufactured by Rolls Royce and cost many hundreds of pounds per metre. I did love working on the subs. In terms of an engineering project, probably akin to something like the space shuttle.

Those people who a lost near the Titantic site on 10:33 - Jun 20 by ElderGrizzly | 17 bolts. All from the outside. Zero means of escape from the inside. It's basically a diving coffin. And also why it is not signed off my any of the agencies who would normally sign off this type of thing. The CBS reporter who went on it last year got to 37 feet down and had to come back up as it failed. They are 2 1/2 miles down (probably) and only 3 subs exist in the world that can go that deep. And even then, they can't rescue them because of the issues mentioned above. |
This not what compassion looks like.

It's the families I feel for. As for the 'participants', you can't blame people struggling to feed thir families & pay their mortgages/rents, for rolling their eyes at those with more money than sense.

I don't think that Ash Sarkar is struggling financially. Regardless, it's a disgusting comment to make when five people who are slowly dying from oxygen deprivation at the bottom of the ocean.

I've always found the fascination with the wreck of the Titanic somewhat ghoulish, driven by commercial factors. However, as I've visited the Titanic exhibition in Belfast, I suppose I'm part of the problem.

Ah the film (assume you mean the 1997 James Cameron film rather than 1958's A Night to Remember). My mother went to see the 1997 film and described it as, "A love story on a boat that sinks." She wasn't impressed.

I hope they find them but time is not on their side and the odds are stacked against Very sad but avoidable and I suspect questions will be raised as a result

It seems strange that wrecks of warships are designated as graves and thus you can't dive on them but the Titanic isn't classified as such and thus there are no restrictions. SB

Out of interest what’s the cut off for the amount of personal wealth one can have before you’re not allowed to be sympathetic that they’re sat dying in a baked bean can 12,000 ft below water alongside their children?

Very clearly & obviously not what I said. 99.9999% of people on here would take it as read that I'm sympathetic to their plight & didn't need to actually spell that out.

Good question as it happens. Anyway, I reckon they are all brown bread now, in a way I hope the poor bastards are. Even if they found them, how on earth can they rescue them? I don’t know the answer by the way, maybe there is a magical machine that can rescue a flattened piece of tin which is 2 miles down and with the water pressure that goes with it. There’s a French robot en route. Something 6000 it’s called. Meant to be able to pop down there and help free them if they’re stuck, which is the working assumption I think. It can possibly free them, cut anything they’re stuck on etc. Finding the vessel is still the main issue. Hopefully they can narrow the search enough with the knocking sounds they’ve heard (assuming it is those guys inside the vessel creating those noises). Mental really, hope they come out of it alive but looking increasingly unlikely with time running out.
