Really hard to see where we make upgrades in January 09:22 - Nov 11 with 7656 views | Asa | So many of the current squad have shown good moments really. Even ones like Chaplin and Burgess who'd barely had a look in a few weeks back have suddenly very much looked the part. Only real contenders would be Walton, H Clarke, Luongo, Broadhead and Al Hamadi to be replaced with players of a higher calibre. Everyone else likely to play a part really. Taylor was looking much better a few weeks back too before being replaced. Seem to be far fewer candidates that we've been used to for the next stage of the building process where there have always been 6, 7, 8 players well below the rest and due to be upgraded.

Really hard to see where we make upgrades in January on 11:33 - Nov 11 by bsw72 | My thought is that it is going to be challenging to stay within FFP guidelines to purchase players which offer a significant improvement, and that with both loan spots full, bringing someone in on loan would require Phillips or Cajuste leaving as my understanding (which may be wrong) is that we are limited to only 2 loan signings at any one time, and 4 in total over the course of the season. |
only 2 prem loans at a time.

Really hard to see where we make upgrades in January on 11:43 - Nov 11 by Matt_Netherlands | He had a much much better game yesterday but I wouldn’t be surprised to see us go for another keeper who is capable of being our number one. Muric has made some absolutely massive saves, but he doesn’t always instil confidence. Yesterday was a perfect example… Stopped two certain goals: Son’s effort be tipped over The 1 on 1 save in injury time Then nearly had two clangers: Dropping the ball down to his feet with Son just behind him Playing the ball 30 yards forward and straight to a sours player (which ironically ended up with us scoring a goal) |
I don't think we have enough FFP headroom left to splurge on another no.1.

Really hard to see where we make upgrades in January on 12:04 - Nov 11 with 1550 views | IPSWICHFANITFC | I think a right winger will be on the list. Burns has struggled and Johnson is a good option to nullify a threat, but your Palace/Bournemouth at home type games, you'd want an attacker there. A striker possibly, though there's probably a lot of Prem clubs wishing they had a Delap form striker right now so we will see. I could see another centre mid. I think whilst Taylor & Luongo haven't been bad, they're both Championship level. An upgrade possibly. January is a very hard window if you're down the bottom to attract players permanently. I feel like we could be looking abroad here in the loan market.

I think it is likely we won’t have much financial flexibility available to us. We might have held a little back, allowing us to deal in Jan to cover injuries or lack of form, but you’d think we didn’t save much. Plus as OP is alluding to, there aren’t really any weak spots in our squad (other than cover up front). At most two in, probably just one is my guess. The form/fitness situation could well have changed by the back-end of January anyway.

Really hard to see where we make upgrades in January on 10:08 - Nov 11 by C_HealyIsAPleasure | Well quite Excellent performance and result yesterday obviously, but saying a team in 17th with 8 points from 11 games can’t be upgraded is laughable really. Prior to yesterday we’d taken 1 point from 4 games Not sure why I’m bothering tbh, the OP is just trying to collect uppies as usual |
Obvious we can upgrade or we wouldn't be near the bottom! I think the real question is whether we could afford to upgrade on what we've got. Because we upgraded so extensively in the summer (£100m worth of upgrades) I doubt we have enough left in the budget to bring in anyone who is a significant upgrade without running a financial risk. My gut feeling when people talk about splashing the cash in Jan is that that is pie in the sky thinking.

Really hard to see where we make upgrades in January on 10:28 - Nov 11 by Guthrum | Thing is, they'd have to be replaced with players of higher calibre than the current starters, to make it worthwhile spending the money. I'm not convinced that, having just got to the point of a settled team functioning well (presuming the current trend continues), we would want to upset that with many more additions. One or two, if any, for me. |
Well said | | | |

We'll also see what loan opportunities there is in January. Take yesterday as an example, if Spurs are still 9th ish in January, you can see them spending some cash which will drop their youngsters out of contention. Maybe McKenna will want someone like Moore or Lankshear. Chelsea will undoubtedly buy a few more, so maybe Guiu or even Chukwuemeka. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Really hard to see where we make upgrades in January on 12:40 - Nov 11 with 1399 views | Bellevue_Blue | As you say, tough to see where the upgrades might be needed. I think it's a certainty that AAH will go out on loan and we will use our final English loan on a loan to buy if we stay up. Do we need cover for RW now Chieo is out? If we could somehow prize Fellows from WBA's grasp that would be a good signing to compete with Wes IMO. Other than that, I wouldn't be interested in change for the sake of change. I'd be very surprised if any of the squad are looking to leave in Jan though, it's not a tournament summer so they don't all need to be playing and as Cam Burgess has proved, you're only an injury away from proving your good enough to hold your own in the Premier League.
Really hard to see where we make upgrades in January on 12:48 - Nov 11 with 1349 views | Mercian | Another midfielder who is adept in the number 6 and 8 roles. I don't think playing with a 10 is always the way to go and a good number 8 would allow us to start in a 4-5-1/4-1-4-1 formation if appropriate.

I agree we need someone on the right. Fellows a good shout as well, I think we were linked with him in the summer?
Really hard to see where we make upgrades in January on 12:59 - Nov 11 with 1308 views | victorysquad | I think you have to look at the Brighton squad and go man for man, throughout that squad. When we are on a level playing field with them, then yes it starts to get a bit harder. But they are a team that can go toe to toe with Man City, and that has to be where we aspire to be. We have some players that can do that now, we have some players that look like that will be able to do that given more coaching. But we need an entire squad that can do that. It's tough, as you want the current squad to be given enough of a chance to see if they can step up. But we really want to try and climb out of the current mixup into somewhere like 14th. We are a couple of wins short of that so far, and we want to ensure the next batch of 10, and the next batch after that, we can get those extra 2 wins to pull us clear.

Really hard to see where we make upgrades in January on 14:59 - Nov 11 with 1122 views | MK1 | I still wish we had signed Kieffer Moore. I would like us to sign a striker with PL experience. Delap and Hirst are absolutely fine for me, but if we are going to sign anyone, (not sure we need to) then an experienced PL forward would be my only choice.

Really hard to see where we make upgrades in January on 15:00 - Nov 11 with 1123 views | Kev_W | It’s still a bit early to say with certainty about January’s priorities. There are some positions where we need more depth and options - striker, right sided attacker in Ogbene’s absence. Centre midfield is an area where there will be injuries and suspensions. If we can continue to improve and start January outside the bottom 3, we have some scope to attract decent players. If we are really struggling bringing in the right players becomes difficult. It’s taken a while for McKenna to forge a team capable of turning in the necessary performance levels for the PL and I’d imagine he would want to minimise changes in January. The last January window has some clues to the approach we might take this time – someone who can add firepower in attack (Moore), a strong, experienced character (Travis) and one or two more opportunist signings to add options (Sarmiento and Al-Hamadi). Something similar but up a level is probably the aim for this year. H Clarke, Al-Hamadi and Broadhead probably need Championship loan moves to help their own development. Unless any are keen to drop back down on loan, I can’t see any other of the frequent nonstarters going. Burns, Luongo and Woolfie all have parts to play and contribute to the culture of the squad.

Broja was a loan with an obligation to buy. I really don't think we've got the funds to buy a striker in January, because of the FFP restrictions which Ashton talked about. Unless McKenna is prepared sell, I think the only way we sign a striker is on loan. Which is far easier said than done as they need to be available and PL quality. Maybe someone like Danny Ings.
Really hard to see where we make upgrades in January on 15:35 - Nov 11 with 1072 views | _clive_baker_ | I think there's a good few players who are next in line for that natural progression upgrade process, not least H. Clarke, Luongo, Al-Hamadi, Broadhead. Perhaps Woolfenden too. Not to say all 5 will leave in Jan, I dare say maximum a couple will if we get replacements, but next summer if we stay up I think they'll be the ones to exit stage left.

I know he was. There will be Prem strikers not getting a look in, at the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal for example, who'll be hoping for a loan move for the second half of the season (to show their parent club what they can do, put themselves in the shop window, or even for a loan leading to a buy). We got a cracker from Man City's reserves so no reason we can't do so again.

I think another forward if we can find one. Maybe one with potential that doesn’t impact too much on FFP? But they’re as rare as hens teeth. Another CM? Somebody to replace Ogbene? I guess it depends over the next few weeks how Cajuste, Phillips develop? Would bring back Cam Humphries be worth a go? Trouble is he’s getting sorely needed game time at WW and it might be better for him to stay there. In typical clueless fashion I’m airing towards leave alone and let the new players settle in to McKennas methods. Looked at the game today on TownTV, the players look together and happy. Our supporters were b brilliant btw. With Chaplin and the other stalwarts of the past few seasons and Johnson shocking the hell out of me playing so well I’m really not sure we look that light squad wise.
Really hard to see where we make upgrades in January on 17:16 - Nov 11 with 918 views | FrimleyBlue | Better fringe players and cover for those who want to move on. Broady. Al hamadi loan. Wolfy. Maybe luongo. He might just be happy at his age tho. That's not to say we won't try and get another cajuste. Morsy won't last forever and Phillips is most likely near impossible to buy in the summer.

Some of that depends on whether you think he's at the top end of his game or if through good coaching he can improve and cut out those errors. He's still relatively young and the evidence from the past couple of seasons is that virtually every player has improved from the point they came into the club so I don't see any reason why Muric shouldn't also do that.

Hear you completely in improving and hopefully that’s the case. We can’t afford to carry any passengers though…. We’d have to be spending 15m+ to improve on him I think, so that might rule it out.
