Now that the club has confirmed Morsy chose not to wear the armband, how do our LGBTQ fans feel about this?
Like I say I would continue the interesting conversation we were having but that thread is locked.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Homosexuality banned, but wearing an armband of a rainbow not banned? Maybe a grey area

*although there are plenty of Muslims who are, the mayor of London happy to stand behind Pride banners, other Muslim captains have worn it

What are you talking about?! I've asked a simple question because I don't know. Gambling isn't allowed but wearing a shirt with a sponsor isn't gambling. It's pretty simple. However, if having any relation to betting (including wearing betting logos) is banned then fair enough. I'm just trying to understand the religious rules because I don't have a scoobie.

Wearing an armband is a choice to promote something. Having a logo on your football shirt isn't you personally endorsing it. Were you endorsing Magical Vegas when you were wearing those shirts?!?

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

'assuming'

ie. you or anyone commenting on this thread doesn't actualy know. There is a whole lot of asusmption going on.

Maybe some of the assumptions are correct, maybe not but just a lot of what is being thrown at Morsy by some doesn't sit comfortably with me perosnally.

As for your question, the refusal is because of his beliefs, i don't know, because I don't know Sam Morsy.

And even if it is, it still doesn't make him a homophobe.
[Post edited 3 Dec 2024 0:33]

His refusal to wear the armband is due to his religious beliefs. His religious belief is that homosexuality is a sin. It’s really not that hard and doesn’t need mental gymnastics in order to defend him.

You’ve spent three threads bending over backwards in order to defend Sam Morsy’s refusal to wear the rainbow armband. Stop looking for yet another angle to do so.

Gambling, like drinking alcohol, is a big no no in the Muslim faith. So although wearing a betting logo on a shirt isn’t partaking in the act of gambling, it is promoting gambling. So he is promoting something that goes against his religious beliefs. He did so for many games of football.

Wearing the rainbow, armband like Texters said on his post and I pointed out to you on your ”eating a bacon sandwich post”, is not partaking in a same sex act, but it is promoting inclusion and welcomeness towards the LGBTQ+ community. Sam felt that his religious beliefs prohibited him doing so.

Its rank hypocrisy from him.

As you now seem to have concluded your “debate”, personally I’d have called it a deflection but that’s not the point, I have an unsettling observation.

You have made numerous contributions on this thread to defend Morsy’s “rights” yet 3 different posters have shared their views and real experiences as gay supporters and how it has personally made them feel but you failed to acknowledge any of them, no upvotes, no empathy or any form of response.

For someone that clearly feels strongly about the subject that seems “odd”. Perhaps that tells its own story about you, perhaps it’s an oversight by you or maybe you are just using your “right” to ignore the feelings of those most impacted.

Right, let's get one thing sorted here.

My point all the way along has been the right to choose whether to support something.

Its got nothing to do with whether I think he is right or wrong to do so, I've mentioned that.

With regards to your "unsettling observation" (give me strength), I think its absolutely horrific that people feel that they have to hide their sexuality and experience issues over it.

Everybody should be able to live their lives how they wish.

However, that doesn't mean that that everybody has to support them regardless of their personal beliefs. (This being the case of Morsy, not myself before you leap to another unsettling observation).

Please don't alledge things about me in the future.

Thanks.

By having a sponsor you are supporting that sponsor.
Morsy being happy to wear the shirt means he's happy to support the sponsor otherwise as said earlier in thread if he was so against it there were options available to him so that he didn't go against his beliefs. He chose however to continue to wear the shirts. Not on just one occasion but for many games and seasons.

He however found it to difficult to wear an armband for 90 minutes. There's a specific reason for that. Unfortunately.

I'm not looking for an angle to defend him. I've already changed my position and don't support him. Keep up if you're still determined to have a pop at me.

I was asking a genuine question. You've just repeated what Joe and another poster said - but from my POV (as a non-Muslim) having a betting sponsor on a football shirt doesn't indicate that the wearer is promoting it. I asked Joe if he was promoting Magical Vegas when he worse those shirts and surprise surprise he's gone silent.

Wearing an armband is deliberately promoting something. Having to wear your team's shirt, which happens to have a sponsor, does not mean you endorse that sponsor and everything they do. Wind your neck in.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

This place hasn’t lost its mind.

In fact, there are some posters on this very thread that have shown how wonderful they are as people.

It is really quite simple. If religion is a barrier to accepting a demographic of people, and he is unable to do so, he is not fit to be the captain. The ambassador and role model should not be someone who says “I cannot accept a display of solidarity with a group due to my religion”.

Yes I'm accepting and supporting the sponsor by wearing the shirt. I'm advertising their company by wearing it so yes it Is supporting it. Just like morsy was supporting and being part of the advertising of betting companies.

I have supported those from the community in this thread. I've written one long post to one praising their bravery.

I don't know why you've added all this other stuff. I have accepted his stance is wrong. I have simply asked this morning - on the wearing a gambling sponsor point - whether that is strictly against the rules, because I don't know.

By not publicly supporting it, he is publicly rejecting it - there’s no middle ground on this one.

There’s been a lot of word salads on this thread by people trying to talk around why the non-acceptance of a basic small gesture of inclusion isn’t a big deal. It’s being spelled out why it is, and why also this viewpoint from fans is hurtful

Isn’t the point though that he DIDNT have to wear it?
If his god/religion was THAT precious to him, as I understand it is, then he could have walked away from that club/contract.
He made a choice, in both situations.

Personally, and I know I come across as heartless many times on here, but I feel a bit sad for our gay supporter base that might now feel isolated or distant from the club.they were here before SM, and will be here after him. Slight stain on what’s been a wonderful few years.

Sorry but you’ve again made this thread the Dolly show. It’s incredibly frustrating and insulting to the people who have shared their experiences here. Your insistence of trying to challenge every person in a victim-like state is completely unnecessary.

Please reflect on how you are coming across.

I don’t understand the mental gymnastics you’re trying to apply and I think they’re in poor taste. I’ll leave it there as I have already failed in not engaging with you further like I said I would.
