I think Harry will stay - he is long term player as he is so young and has developed loads. This is, I see, an addition on loan wiht potential as we have no guarentee Axel will stay (please stay)

So which defender will you de-register instead?

We only have limited spots in the squad and if we don't de register Harry we will have a surplus of right backs in the 25.

- Over 100 PL games
- Turns 27 in January
- Signed by Europa League winners for £10m in summer
- England caps
- Versatile - CB, RB, DM
- Foreign based but PL experienced....about as good a loan as we can hope for logistically!

Assume he ment stay as in not sold.
Wouldn't be opposed to Harry getting a champ loan and see if he can improve by playing loads.

Would assume Harry Clarke is moving on if Godfrey comes in.

I know Harry is a hometown boy, but since he's come here we've looked to upgrade that position a couple of times and honestly I don't think he's up to the level. He's too poor positionally too.

Youngster who we have probably got promoted a bit quickly for as it's such a tough role to play in this league....loan spell in the Championship will do him good for a few months as is still a bit raw for us at the moment

Would agree with that, I think Harry is not good enough to be part of the squad at the moment, so loaning him out seems a good option to see if a run of games will improve him.

As much as I would love him stay, there is no way we will carry 4 traditional right backs.

Whilst he's not been bad at all this season, I still think he's got a little bit to learn and playing towards the top end of the Championship against wingers a level down would be no bad thing for us.

It's a shame with Harry Clarke as he seems a great fella. Pity his ability doesn't match his enthusiasm. He's a bit of a liability when it comes to defending as is Davis, but in his case you have the knowledge that he can put in a fine cross from free kicks and corners and can set up goals consistently.

conflicted on this one. Was highly thought of earlier on in his career but not ever looked like kicking on but knows the league, we aren't in a position where we can just go and get whomever we want because of a league position.

Good luck to him, hope he does well here.

Pace is clearly high on our wishlist of incoming players, as evidenced by O’Shea and Ogbene who were both among the fastest players in their positions last season. Godfrey was considered the fastest player at Everton a couple of years ago.

Not sure that England caps in 2021 is the mark of a good player. Afterall, he played alongside Jesse Lingard for England!

I'm a bit meh about it. Hasn't played consistently well for a while now and whilst he has prem experience, our other signings with prem experience (Johnson and Phillips) have hardly set the world alight.

Probably a bit of an upgrade on that position for now until Axel is back, so as long as it's not a particularly expensive deal then it's a decent loan signing

It obviously hasn't worked there for whatever reason but Atalanta are one of the best recruiters in the whole of Europe and they identified him in the summer.

Hes only played 22 mins this season ??

especially in the role he will be playing, the team shape means the RB role is often the one that is exposed so 1:1 defending and pace to recover are critical. Godfrey isn't the best at heading and can get caught ball-watching a little, but think he is an excellent choice for what we need.

I just posted a twitter link to an overlap clip on McKenna's coaching and whilst the V link is there in the post, the tweet doesn't show always. Then I refreshed and went back on and it was there. Strange!

He was called up to an England squad in 2021, mustve been doing something right.

Kalvin Phillips was Englands player of the tournament in 2021…

That was almost 4 years ago.

I think more likely that H Clarke is likely moving on.

Axel has done enough to warrant an extension, nothing suggests he wants to leave.

You'd think AT and BG would offer a really good right sided pair/ competition.

Sadly, I think that looks the most likely scenario. HC is probably one of the most vulnerable. It’ll be a shame if/when he moves on - snap him in half and he’s got ITFC written right through the middle.

I'm still not convinced he is a traditional right back.

When he does move on, he'll quickly settle into being a very good, functional centre back.

Probably somewhere like Portsmouth or Reading. One of those clubs you have to check what division they're currently in.

This narrative confused me a bit, because most successful signings in the McKenna era hadn’t played consistently.

Just need to look at:

Davis - Not doing much at Bournemouth or Leeds, now one of the best left backs in the league.
Delap - Not doing much at Stoke or Hull, now one of the most in demand strikers in the league.
Hutchinson - Never breaking through at Chelsea or Arsenal, now one of the first names on team sheet here.
Hirst - His record was atrocious, got us promoted and looked ok in his Prem features.
Tuanzebe - Played about 10 games in 3 years before coming here and been a solid feature since.

Whilst true

We've got 19 games left

How long for him to get fit?

Is this a clear indication that McKenna sees the back three/five as the preferred shape for the rest of the season?

Axel/Godfrey
O’Shea/Woolfy
Greaves/Burgess

That’s a very impressive set of options with quite a lot of flexibility too (well on the right side anyway).

My memory of Ben Godfrey was him being a long thin skinny guy, all elbows & angles, but I was at Venezia Vs Atalanta earlier this season and watching him warm up he looked like he’d turned into a proper beast. Could’ve been a trick of the Venetian light with the Atalanta training gear though, both of which are mama mia good.

Harry is still young remember. He's got a lot about his game which is very good but is still learning.

If harry were to leave on loan, would love him to go Wycombe
