(Which is different to saying "Cook doesn't know what he's doing")
What's that, 11 players starting first-team training and nearly three times as many in the 23s? Even considering there won't be much ball work over the first week, this is one hell of a high wire act. Need to see four or five more players come in very quickly otherwise this will start to look pretty messy.
In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
If today's story is true I have no idea what Cook is trying to achieve by this. I know it is still relatively early days but we don't look close to bringing anybody in currently let alone the 10 or 11 we are going to need. Why alienate and de-motivate players you may well need if recruitment doesn't go exactly to plan?
With regards to people like Bishop I appreciate we may want an upgrade for the starting 11 but I find hard to believe we are going to find better quality for a squad player at this level. It's hard to work out what the plan is at this stage.

Part of the problem is we don't have a lot of room for "squad players" aged 20 or over, with the EFL's restriction on squad sizes (22 in that age category, plus goalkeepers).

Back Cook 100%. Trust in the process and enjoy the summer. For the record Cook has made large squad overhauls at his previous clubs with huge success.

Sure, appreciate that is a factor and we do have some useful youngsters coming through.

i would be surprised if we are in the promotion mix this year. We will have so many changes and 80% of the new signings are going to have to be hits for us to have a chance.

I do wonder if posting that U23's poster with names on it was a call to arms for anyone on that list to prove him wrong...
Might be. Alan Lee was speculating along those lines in the second part of his interview. He was talking about the reports of players all being told they can leave, but same principle.

I would be surprised if we are in the promotion mix because of the level of change required throughout the club, not just the first team.
The reality is an overblown squad of 40+ players is being rightly shipped out. It’s going to take time. It’s significant that Dozzell and probably Downes apart, Chelsea and Man City are not knocking on the door for League One’s finest squad. They’re mostly winding up in League 2 or lower end League 1 or as yet no club at all.
I’d rather take time to get in players with the right attitude and hopefully ability than do a panic buy Hurst style and wind up paying over the odds for dross. Progress on and off the field is all I ask for at the moment.

Or, with thirty one names on it, it is more than enough to have an eleven v eleven game (with a few subs) and then Cook decides on an eleven to play the eleven in the first team dressing room...
[edit] Reading that back I think I should make it clear that the eleven chosen from the U23s room would play the first team eleven on the training pitch, not have an eleven v eleven game in the first team dressing room.

"....but we don't look close to bringing anybody in currently"
The trouble with statements like this on here is, we don't know how close we are to bringing anyone in. We could have a player or 5 or 6 players lined up, and very close to being announced, or we could be miles away from any more deals being sorted out at all. We, as fans, just don't know.
Did anyone know Oli Hawkins was signing for Mansfield, and that we were getting some kind of, albeit undisclosed, fee for him? I'd certainly not heard anything about it or seen any mention of it before the news broke that he'd signed for them, so deals can and are being done without the fans knowledge of them.
Keep the faith and we'll find out in due course whether it's worked out in the way it is hoped it will, with a squad all pulling together to achieve the goal of being promoted back to the Championship and beyond...
It is a concern that the scale of change is too much for one Summer and we end up repeating some of the mistakes of 2018. The lack of signings in the last three weeks only exacerbates that. Pushing Dozzell out, and doing the same to Bishop might come to seem very careless.
Cook needs to get off to a good start because the end to last season was nowhere near good enough. Any further delays in bringing players in aren't going to help him achieve that.

Though the difference between this year and 2018 is we’re looking to improve the squad rather than rebuild on the cheap.

I did a double take at your second paragraph - we were in for the Villa striker? And got beaten to his signing by Mansfield?? I think you mean Oli Hawkins...
