Have we done a Veganuary thread yet? on 13:39 - Jan 7 by LevelTheLand | I didn't even think to start doing it, but have been looking to use a lot less dairy products. Got given one of the Bosh books for Christmas, so hopefully get a few good ideas from there. |
My Partner is off dairy - health reasons - and I am trying to reduce. I can't quite find a good substitute for milk in cereal though. I get through two pints of cow milk a week, so starting to reduce it.

Lightweight- there’s only 28 days in February.
Have we done a Veganuary thread yet? on 14:13 - Jan 7 with 1407 views | Tractorchef | Spring or summer would be a much better time to do this. With an abundance of seasonal British fruit and veg around we could cut down on the imported stuff. What is the motivation for doing it?
Have we done a Veganuary thread yet? on 14:27 - Jan 7 with 1386 views | Rozz | More power to those trying to make a positive change or just try something new. For those asking why bother for a month, I tried to go veggie for a month at uni and it stuck for 3 years. I found it a great catalyst for learning to cook and create food without relying on meat for flavour, I upped my fruit and veg intake massively and saved money on the weekly shop. I've slipped into my old ways somewhat in recent years, mainly as I found it nearly impossible to find things to eat on regular trips to China. I eat seafood now, and dip into the Turkey at Christmas, and blissful ignorance has crept back in.

Have we done a Veganuary thread yet? on 14:58 - Jan 7 with 1330 views | clive_baker | Not for me, Clive. I don't like the whole do something for a month stuff really. Like dry January, then people get absolutely w@nkered on the 1st Feb, just seems so pointless. I followed a strictly plant based diet some time back, circa 2009 and did it for over a year, it was for both moral and health reasons, had read a lot about it and wanted to see for myself especially in terms of gym and conditioning. Enjoyed it, just missed meat and cheese if I'm completely honest. It was easy enough at home but hard when eating out where options were more limited than they are now. Nowadays I do eat meat again and dairy, although I have a 5:2 rule for the meat, so only eat it 2 days per week, which are kept fluid depending on plans. Been doing that years, it's sustainable for me and I think the way people will go generally. Cold turkey full on vegan is a sacrifice that most won't make, and it impacts far beyond diet of course, but people are increasingly aware of the impact of their actions on the planet and I can see people managing that on more of a credit / debit basis.

I had a decent walk this morning and finished with a full English breakfast. 2 bacon, sausage, egg, beans, tomato, 2 hash browns, mushrooms washed down with a big mug of tea. Laid off the toast - didn’t want to overdo it. Food of the gods.

Have you tried this? It's really light & refreshing. They do a non-longlife version too (take care if shopping as the cartons are almost identical). On the downside, the almonds are grown in California. https://www.ocado.com/productImages/230/230375011_0_1280x1280.jpg?identifier=0a0 Alternatively, Ecomil are an excellent brand, with various flavours of sweetened + unsweetened, and their almonds are grown in Spain - https://www.dolphinfitness.co.uk/en/ecomil-almond-drink-no-sugar-1-x-1000-ml/572 Best of the soyas I've found are Provamel organic & Alpro organic, both available from most supermarkets.

Last night I made a big bowl of Spag Bol and texted her that it was on the hob for when she got back. [Post edited 7 Jan 2022 13:26]

Have we done a Veganuary thread yet? on 15:49 - Jan 7 with 1271 views | J2BLUE | Nah I don't see the point. Why declare myself vegan and then then crave bacon, cheese and ice cream forever? I'd much rather forego the label and just be 90%+ plant based. If you think 10% animal products for a standard person is 1750 kcals a week, you can have quite a few little things within those calories. I know it will never satisfy people who want 100% adherence from everyone but the western world going 90% plant based on average would be massive. Everyone has that one thing they would struggle to give up. Wouldn't it be so much better to say ok fine, you have a couple of eggs twice a week and carry on having milk in your tea? I'm probably nearer to 95% most weeks but i'm going to have that odd bacon sandwich, ice cream or Sunday roast with family (Ulla - I mean meat, potatoes, veg etc) and i'm not going to feel guilty about it. Most of the time I go for the vegan option and prefer it but I don't see anything wrong with people giving themselves just enough leeway to succeed. Buying less animal products means you an buy higher quality. Yes, it's still killing an animal who wants to live or exploiting an animal in some way but I believe the life of the animal matters. https://sp-ao.shortpixel.ai/client/to_webp,q_glossy,ret_img,w_1342,h_1216/ Lowering the 32% to 10% would have a massive effect on the environment, animals and health (if replaced with things like lentils and beans).

Have we done a Veganuary thread yet? on 16:21 - Jan 7 with 1240 views | textbackup | Will continue to eat a variety of different foods. not labelling it as anything other than a healthy balanced diet the vegans had a shelf in the oven for the xmas dinner, some naughty beetroot/pesto/lentil parcel things. the pigs in blankets tasted like tissue paper tho, and thats from someone that likes vegan food

Have we done a Veganuary thread yet? on 16:31 - Jan 7 with 1213 views | Dubtractor | I'm another vote for never doing a January fad, what with January being a dismal month to start with. But I've been gradually reducing my meat consumption for a few years anyway, for environmental as much as ethical reasons. I'll never be a vegan, though I'm certainly not someone who needs to eat meat, but I do prob eat more meat in winter than summer due to the type of meals I cook at this time of year.
