Whatever your view on this crisis it is NOT sustainable!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cddezjy97vro

So much for the smash the gangs approach,Rwanda was not by any means perfect but it had migrants here in NI going down south to get away from it in such numbers that the Irish police actually started doing checks at the border!

A link from EU website on second languages.

Most spoken foreign languages in the EU

English is spoken by about half of the Europeans (47%) as a foreign or second language, notably increasing 5 percentage points since 2012. 7 out of 10 young Europeans can have a conversation in English, which is 9 percentage points more than in previous survey. After English, French (11%) German (10%) and Spanish (7%) are the most spoken foreign languages in the EU.

If you want the full article… https://europa.eu/eurobarometer/surveys/detail/2979

But most jobs will require the local language. Not to mention the ability to integrate into society.

There's LOADS of substantive engagement with the topic, including lots of facts and figures. And I don't think anyone's suggested open borders either.

Also, if it were simply people "not being entirely happy with immigration" it wouldn't be so much of a problem, but there is clearly much more going on here for some people.

You're creating straw men to knock over, which is a bit odd for someone so against rows and divisiveness on here.

Come on Chris, there has been a lot of supporting evidence provided by one side of the debate and almost none by the other. In fact one side has continually refused to engage with the evidence.

I think some of the 'remember how fortunate/flukey it is we were born here's sounds like where many open borders start.

Probably guilty of skimming and will have a proper read, but saw Benters and Lucan getting a bit of grief for what feels like their honest opinions.

That is utter nonsense. Lots of information and facts from one side, a fair amount of ill informed nonsense from the other.

Also no one advocating open borders and let everyone in

This is priceless. You've popped on to the thread to not engage with the topic whatsoever but instead to have your usual dig at some posters and now it transpires you've not even read the thread. And yet you get affronted when people point out that you're a troll. What you've done on this thread, as in many others, is trolling.

What a ridiculous take

Especially considering the actual language of the OP saying that "whatever your opinion is, this is not sustainable"

To me it's that side of the arguement that are offering little to no substantive engagement

As someone who declared themselves to be left-wing, you sure seem to take a more trumpian approach to engaging in a thread and seeing only what you want to see

I think that's unfair needers and quite disingenuous.
I feared this thread would get pulled early doors but it seems to have regulated itself fairly well.
It's a little bit of a stretch to effectively call it a 10 page pile on, when it hasn't been at all.
If you do go back and read the thread in it's entirety it would be interesting to know if you still have the same opinion.
Whilst my bias will always be drawn to a more humanitarian approach and therefore supportive of those posts and posters, I'm always interested in those who hold an opposite opinion and why they hold it. I would say that the "why" has been missing from those opposing a humanitarian approach, with little more than tired, ill informed tropes being the only opinion being offered up.
Whilst I accept I'm very unlikely to change my mind, I would at least like to hear a cogent opposite opinion to at least challenge my own views.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

If that was the case it renders evidence-based debate completely pointless.

I did actually go on to point out the costs laid out by the govt so I didn’t ‘just’ leave it hanging!
Now if you think those costs are sustainable fair enough!
Ie, £5.5m a day at the last count for 38000 in hotels alone ,that does not include any other accommodation or benefits being provided or the cost of boats etc stationed in the channel to ‘rescue’ the migrants.
I don’t and the numbers now crossing show that Coopers bold claims of “smashing the gangs” is seen as what it was just words!

Rwanda plan costs to date

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/medp-with-rwanda-and-the-illegal-migr

Asylum statistics

https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/sn01403/

In short decisions need to be made faster than has been the case before and those who lose an appeal removed.

It will take time to sort out, but blaming a government who have been in power for 8 months seems a tad unfair, when the problem occurred and was allowed to worsen under the previous government who had been in power for 14 years.

Ps The Brexit deal which was poorly negotiated should have included a plan for asylum seekers, but as with anything done by Johnson & Lord Frost, it was appallingly handled and has left the current mess for others to deal with

Sure, but you called it a "crisis" and effectively said that your statement can't be argued with by saying "whatever your view is, this isn't sustainable" to which others have made sensible arguements to the contrary

Multiculturalism is wonderful if you get out of your bubble/comfort zone and experience it.

At my dad's wake on Thursday I spoke to my uncle who did the family tree stuff... he's actually got back even further than I said - 1046, 20 years before they invaded, in Normandy.

It's funny to think of myself as English, and yet my ancestors defeated the English!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Those "English" mostly originated from Northern mainland Europe and Scandinavia. Benters is probably of Norwegian descent. You should come over and see where your ancestors lived, Benters (they would have arrived on boats and probably committed crimes).

Multiculturalism is great. I went out earlier in the week to a wine shop launch and sampled some great wines from Italy, Argentina, and England too. Afterwards I went for a Japanese meal, the restaurant was buzzing with people of all different ages and ethnicities and it was great. On the way home our taxi driver was from Ecuador, he was hilarious and we had some great chat about tacos and tequila. One of my students this year is a Muslim and I've enjoyed learning from him about Ramadan and how it can affect him on his work placement and the routines he needs to have to manage his fasting.

It's great, what's not to like about appreciating and enjoying other cultures? Wouldn't life be massively boring if everyone looked and thought the same way and only ate fish and chips? Except it wouldn't even be fish and chips as potatoes aren't from Europe, so you'd be having fish and boiled grains.

Benters gets a nose bleed when he goes to London so doubt that's going to happen!

He kind of reminds me an old boy my uncle told me about from somewhere in rural Lincolnshire. Had gone out to France early in the war, got captured and spend the last 4/5 years of war in a PoW camp.

Got home and never left his home town again - on account of the last time he left it didn't end so well.

Many take comfort in the safe and the familiar - not every one has the balls to get on a boat to venture far away from their birth place.

(Not having a dig at Benters, his love of Bentley is actually quite charming)
