Cedric Kipre on 17:40 - Jul 9 by PhilTWTD

Just had a look back and seemed to pass me by completely last summer or perhaps there was too much going on when that was reported, which it was. May have dismissed it as part of the large amount of noise.

Nice one - have updated "the list"

So who's place is he going to take in the team ? I can only see him as being back up if we have injuries and when we get promoted ( fingers crossed ) he will be surplus to requirements and we have to pay up, but handy for cup games I guess.
[Post edited 9 Jul 2025 18:31]

We have three good CBs. It's a squad game. No idea why this needs to be explained to so many.

We are also not going to agree this kind of a deal for a player we don't want if we go up. He will be part of the long term plan if we manage to go up.

We don’t appear to have worked very hard on any deals, hence we have no one in to fill the spots in the team that are most needed. All this garb about being able to start early by MA and KM doesn’t seem to have gotten us anywhere. Other clubs are recruiting. We are standing still. We are never getting PL ready players so we have to just get the best we can. This guy is fine, but not exactly a position that is desperate. Wait all summer to see what scraps we can get from PL teams when they are ready and we may just miss the boat completely.

Can someone change the sheets? He’s made an awful mess in them.
1
Cedric Kipre on 19:49 - Jul 9 with 2999 viewsSmoresy

Great if accurate. Ideally we kept Big Burge but he wanted to guarantee himself playing time, leaving us with a huge hole at CB but not necessarily in the starting lineup.

Kipre was West Brom players' player of the season and supporters' player of the season in 23/24, when they finished 5th. He was also highly regarded by Cardiff fans the year before; one of the few bright lights in a tough season.

Even better, he doesn't eat into transfer funds this year (hopefully wages are reasonable) when we have serious investment required in other areas.

"We dont appear to have worked hard on any deals"

You can't possibly draw thay conclusion because its impossible to tell. Its also unlikely.

Do you think the owners dont want to go up again? Increase the clubs value, and in so doing that of their shareholding?

Do you think Ashton is sitting around playing Darts?

Why on earth would the club not be working be hard on transfers and under what circumstances and why wouldn't they?

A solid championship defender though, a trade up in backup players?

Having just watched his 23-24 half-season highlight reel, certainly solid, but looks a bit more than that. Lots of accurate 30-40 yd passes straight to feet.

Can’t disagree with this the bloke isn’t anywhere near Premier League quality so seems an odd deal.

How close to Premiership quality was Burgess when we bought him? Experienced defender being brought in for cover so not bad business at all.

Some of the comments on this one are a bit confusing.

This guy was the best defender in probably the best defence in the championship 2 seasons ago. Anyone who Carlos Corberan is picking week in, week out is probably pretty good. Can play in different positions across the backline. Knows a lot of the squad already. We now have another good player added to a top defensive unit for this level.

Smart pick up.

I think it's more the nature of the deal that I'm surprised about

Having a likely back-up player take up a loan slot and then being obliged to sign him if we go up, with the likelihood that he'll play even less in the prem, just seems really odd

Athletic CB who can play as a full back. Looks like a replacement for Axel to me.

Indeed. McKenna likes to have a right sided CB/RB hybrid type player - first Donacien, then Tuanzebe, now maybe this lad.

We're going for physicality. Keane was right all along. Four centre-backs at the back.

Some of the comments on here are embarrassing or budgies in disguise.

A loan with a view to buy for 4million, a player with a wealth of experience at this level and who has been playing in the top league in France. Clearly he is coming in as backup, and will be a very able player when called upon. This leaves the funds available to get the CM/CF targets we are also obviously targeting.

Give your heads a wobble lads. Not every signing is going to be a 20 million man.

Where does this leave Woolfy?
An Axel replacement ... not really as he's predominantly a right- sided CB.
Wonder if Woolfy will move on as this will put him down pecking order.

What is it with us and ex or current West Brom players

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
Poll: With Evans taking 65% in Huddersfield, is the Banter Era over?

0
Cedric Kipre on 09:14 - Jul 10 with 1546 viewsSmoresy

Kipre frequently played LCB for West Brom, so I dearly hope this wouldn't be a signing to squeeze Woolf out of the club. That would create another large hole to fill, leaving us back where we started arguably. it should serve to increase healthy competition and leave RB better covered too, rather than disrupt the group.

On the loan point, we're allowed to name 5 in the matchday squad so I don't see this squeezing our flexibility in the market by much. It means we can't sign many more senior Reims players on loan but that may not be a bad thing.

Hope the OP is right, otherwise they might have been done like a Kipre.

I'll get my coat.

Bye, Bye. I don't think you'll need a coat though.

What is it with us and ex or current West Brom players

Agency knowledge. Commission discounts etc etc.

I can't find the link. But I do remember seeing something after ashton joined about his brother in law being an agent or director of a sports agency linked with previous clubs etc. Something like that. But cant for the life of me find it again.

This looks like it's aging well!
