Just seems so pointless to carry on as we are, when things are basically unlocked and it no doubt spreading quickly compared to how things change at June 21st.
Just sack off international travel for the year, end the lockdown and get the country vaccinated.
I'm just so bored of it all now, especially when such a vast %age of the population is vaccinated.

Yep, I think this is the frustration from Govt - that we are going to end up with further restrictions because people who are eligible are not having it.
The reality is, if numbers in those communities don't go up, then they will overwhelm the NHS - and you can't exactly refuse to treat people because they have elected not to have it so you are back at square one.
Has to be incentives done - but working with local councils, local community leaders, and local healthcare professionals to get into these communities is the only way.
As an example though, the Romanian guy mentioned above by me, was offered a jab in Cambridge - he panicked as didn't want to take time off work, get train, etc to go there but by chance I spoke to him that day as was at that site and was able to rearrange it for Gainsborough Sports Centre, a 10 min walk from his house, for the following afternoon at 4pm.
Not all employers would do that, or be aware, and some immigrant workers are in such fear of losing their jobs they simply wouldn't bring it up and just let it slide. It needs to be community outreach
They can also look closely at the wider care sector. I know of two friends in the care sector who have both deferred their jab as they can't afford to take any time off should they get side effects. Both on zero hour contracts.
Find them, jab them and support them if needed.

I see on twitter Robert Peston thinks it will get delayed by 2-4 weeks.
Meant to be getting married in Aug. Only thing I do not understand is we might not be able to have 150 people at our wedding but thousands of people can go to football, some festival is going ahead not full capacity but still 10,000 people

The simple, and somewhat unfair response to that is, how much money does your wedding generate?
Pronouns: He/Him/His.

And there's my answer...
Sorry bud, it sucks. Have a good friend who has been delaying his wedding since this whole thing started too.

No worries I know loads of more couples in the same boat, this is our third date we have changed. I think it will go ahead in Aug but am doubtful we will be able to get the numbers. The wedding venue have been great but if it can go ahead but not the numbers we want then we could lose deposit paid to them. Is frustrating but people in worse situations, people losing relatives to covid, losing jobs, businesses. I just cannot see an end to this, as can see winter again restrictions again

Decent attitude.
Hope it works out for you both one way or another.

Yeah man ditto. Was meant to be August last year and managed to get the same date a year on.
Would rather we postpone the 21st june if neccessary for a couple of weeks and hope the wedding can go ahead in Aug. As you say though, there are plenty in worse positions if it can't happen.

Typed out a proper essay there, which vanished - but I agree with you.
People, in the main, aren't 'selfish', 'greedy' or, more bizarrely, revelling in the deaths of 130k people by wanting an end to restrictions - they just want an end to the most horrible period that we will, most likely, ever have to endure.
But this is TWTD, fck nuance. Fck Johnson too, but that's another essay....
Let me just have a read through that
"Fck Johnson too, but that's another essay...."
Yep,......yep,....ahhh....yep.
No, all good, you have pretty much covered it.

That's the nature of pandemics. The Black Death/Plague kept coming back for centuries, wave after wave every few years.
People - including business leaders who fund political parties - are unrealistically impatient (in epidemiological terms) for things to return to normal and the government's reactions are driven by that as much as the science.
Let's be clear here, the UK's only way out of this pandemic was the vaccine ... we had no other alternative, we didn't do the basics which other countries have done (close borders etc - and yes, I do appreciate in some countries like Australia that cases are beginning to rise again).
We now have 2 thirds of the country vaccinated (of which 25m - when I last checked - double dosed), and yet still, there is talk of delaying things? What else do we need to move forward?

This is the problem, even with vaccines. The trends are all going upwards way too quickly

Right then, so surely once enough of the population is vaccinated (which will reduce serious illness and hospitalisation) we can carry on (with regular vaccination) and not have to worry about locking down again, assuming the vaccines work against any new variant in future*.
Otherwise the 'vaccines being the way out of lockdown' thing is a total con.

I agree. That has to be the plan and the Govt can't afford for it not to be.
But we need to get to about 70% double dosed apparently to have that certainty it won't cause problems for the NHS, particularly with the Delta variant being more transmissible.

Why do you have a problem waiting a few more weeks whilst more people are vaccinated and to try and slow the spread of the Delta variant whilst people get those vaccinations?

It is all a bit odd. We're not really in lockdown at the minute, we can do pretty much everything we were doing last summer. What difference will a few weeks make?

... because no doubt after those 2 weeks we’ll be saying the same thing again.
I’m basically just getting old and I think it’s just frustration that these last 18 months have been an epic fu*k up.

I agree that 2-weeks will make little to no difference and will again just move the goalposts no doubt without a true sense of what measurable success is. The COVID numbers we’re talking about a ridiculously low to the point a doctor consultant friend of mine said they’re no longer prioritising COVID in patients in his A&E department.
Life has to move forward, people need escapism and it’s becoming paramount to some that life resumes to some kind of ‘normality’ for the good of mental health.

Joe, you're missing the point here I'm afraid. The variant has been here for a while, and it's gone from being a handful of cases a few weeks ago to being by far and away the dominant cause of disease. You need to look at the trajectory, not the current numbers. The trajectory is cases doubling in possibly even single digit number of days. If only those who have had 2 jabs have a decent level of protection, as is hypothesised, then we could be in a world of pain in a very short space of time.
Sounds like I would be safer on say a Greek island for 10 days while the rest of you stay here and take expensive tests to keep safe and line some Tory donors pockets!
