Indeed. Invented by de Beers shortly after WW2. I think it started as one month's but presumably inflation has kicked in over the years.

Nah all of that is a load of balls, buy a ring that you think she would like, why should the price tag be relevant. What I would say is it’ll (all being well) be on her finger for the rest of your lives, and will become hugely sentimental. It might even be passed down to future generations and as much as I scratch my head at it, it IS a big deal to a lot of women. It’s only money, so within reason if there’s something you know she will absolutely love I would try and get it. |  |

We are on our honeymoon at the moment in the states.
If she wants a diamond ring then you need to read up on the 4 C’s, if she doesn’t want a diamond ring then you can class yourself a lucky man.
I was fortunate she told me what she wanted in terms of “cut” for three years prior to the proposal so I had a slightly less vague idea of what to get her. After that I just went into a local jeweller and walked out after 2 hours with the thing. I know it’s not in the British nature but you can haggle hard with jewellers. When she called the owner over to take over negotiations I knew I was getting somewhere.

Something that is worth thinking about. Some women want a big diamond, the whole symbolic thing, but then they find its impractical, or scary to wear it.... my sister-in-laws engagement ring barely ever gets worn, most of the time she wears the "proposal" ring. On the other hand my wife found a smaller, less ostentatious ring, that she still loves, that she wears all the time... its these sorts of conversations that might be worth having before a ring gets bought, either, before or after the proposal. | |

3 months is very much marketing bollox. Don't fall for it. Couple of weeks would still make for a lovely ring.
Spend what you are both happy with. If you are saving for a house together, all the more reason not to go stupid with a ring you can ill afford.
What style to get? Take her for a walk and go past a jewelers, linger and ask what type of ring style she likes. To get the right size, you'll probably need to ask her.
If you are not hoping to surprise her - then you could take her to a jewelers proper and have a chat about what she wants.
If you do go for the more economical end, defo prep her first, pointing out that you'd love a new car/motorbike but things are so tight at the moment that you recognise sacrifices are needed.

Firstly congrats on the decision.
I proposed with a token ring and then arranged to take her to London. We went to a Diamond dealer where she spent a few hours looking at stones and then choosing the ring for setting. She had a nice day out of it, worked out far cheaper for the quality of stone you can get from high street and due to the quality we got (and the fact I get to sell it soon), it turned out to be a half decent investment over 10 Years |  | | |

I didn't go anywhere near that sort of money, sure some will do but just not worth it.
When I decided to propose I told my missus I was looking for a new watch so we spent a couple of hours across different jewellers looking at them, when she inevitable got bored she started looking at jewellery for herself but basically picked a ring she liked without even realising it so made my job a lot easier
Best thing about it was that it was £800, as opposed to £5k......and when I went back to buy it they gave me a deal for cash and knocked £100 off it which meant I could withdraw it from the cashpoint that day across my 2 accounts......and then by the time I proposed the price had gone up to £900 so it looked as though i spent £200 more than I actually did! Not that that matters....the jewellers was next to her work, so when she went in to get it resized slightly she'd seen the higher price rather than hunting it down to check on me! |  |
