Not holding out much hope of Sunak wanting to debate properly. Assuming it'll be 60mins of him whining 'but Corbyn', no?

Car crash of a debate. 45 seconds isn’t long enough to answer anything properly, just soundbites and bobbins from 2 complete clowns.

Exactly. My voting slip will have a nice ITFC We are Premier League scribbled on it.

A thoroughly depressing watch.

Sunak is just totally useless.

Starmer is playing it safe, which may be smart but is also wholly uninspiring and ignites nothing in the electorate.

Where is the vision. This country has so much wrong with it, but is underpinned by amazing institutions like the NHS which is on its knees. So where is the big the plan for the NHS. All so passive and pointless.

Why do people assume things like this? I would never use private healthcare on principle (and have had the opportunity to do so).

You might be able to convince me you would deny your own treatment on principle, but the question was about a family member. You'd choose to let a loved one go without treatment rather than use private healthcare? Seems unlikely.

Thought Starmer improved as it went on, but had a terrible start. Sunak kept asking him the questions and he kept replying with how bad the Tories are instead of what Labour would do. Took him about 5 goes to rebut the £2000 tax accusation, although admittedly the host was too weak and letting Sunak talk over them too much which she corrected later on.

My heart sank when I saw it was on ITV. I knew it would be terrible.

I'm surprised it wasn't Ant and Dec chairing the debate.

I have very little interest in politics to be honest, but had to watch them two comedy acts have a debate.

Both are as bad as each other, neither are leaders, both are bandits.

Whoever wins, and I couldn’t care less, will be full of corruption, empty promises, lies and scandals.

...but not so full under Labour which is a gain worth having, no matter how bad the underlying situation remains and how inadequate Labour's plans are.

Also a Labour-led base gives us a better point from which, real actual meaningful gains in the appalling social and environmental state of the country and the world stand at least some chance of being made, by the rebooting of the corrupt and destructive economic system to give us a chance to actually survive let alone thrive.

So boiling it down, we've learnt that Sunak is rude, thin-skinned, and completely out of touch and that Starmer is uninspiring and has little to offer the country by way of a plan. Colour me surprised.

The format doesn't suit Starmer, he's a lawyer and wants to fully answer questions - there just isn't time. The junior doctors strike you mention is a case in point. He needed to get the short answer out first - "negotiation". But he was beating around the bush too much on more than one occasion.

Yes, you could see that. He was also doing too much facial expression stuff rather than directly verbally challenging the little prime minister.

Labour seem to be running the line, this morning, that Sunak's "£2k Labour tax bill" claims are an outright lie.

Would it not have been better, last night, for Starmer to put that to him in so many words, live on TV? I'd have thought that calling Sunak a liar in front of the nation would be pretty strong optics.

Not a good hour's viewing at all but come on, faced with the choice you'd only want one of those guys to be your PM wouldn't you? Sunak is an absolute piece of work and should be a long way from public life.

Sunak cut across him three times because three times he refused to answer and wanted to talk about what the current government was doing.

Watching this as a neutral and seeing the tribal replies on here is quite funny. Nothing Sunak can say or do would change my votes but I am uninspired by Starmer. He won't say what he will do. Just wants to fight on the Tories record. Which in fairness is safe ground. It's his election to lose.

Hahaha, the idea that you're a neutral! Who are you kidding?

This seems just a little bit important! Sunak perfectly happy to tell barefaced lies to the country on prime time television, repeatedly – because he has absolutely no interest in or respect for any of us.

Sunak just bullsh1tted his way through the whole thing, with a few repetitive lies designed to stay in peoples' minds. Starmer in turn, seemed reduced to an incredulous smirk in response - I spose there are only so many ways you can say your opponent is lying before you sound like a whiner.

Hopefully that will get the coverage it merits. It shows the Tories' complete disregard for decency and honesty. Repeating a flawed analysis and presenting it as independent when it clearly isn't is really poor form.

I worry that the damage (as limited as it may be) may already have been done.

The only real line I've taken away from last night is that Labour will apparently put £2k on my tax bill. I know that it's absolute guff, but there will be plenty who either won't see through it, or will decide that they don't want to take that risk.

Seems to be the Tory MO these days. Make the lie stick sufficiently, and the rebuttal won't matter.

Hahaha, the idea that you're a neutral! Who are you kidding?

Well I haven't voted for the Tories since 2017, cut up my membership card and wrote to Ruth Davidson after T May did a deal with the DUP, didn't vote in the 2019 general election as the choice was between a racist incompetent and an incompetent racist, voted Labour at the Scottish Parliamentary elections and voted Labour in the council elections. I have nothing but disgust for the current incarnation of the Tory party and want to see them absolutely obliterated next month but I am not a natural Labour voter, am uninspired by Starmer although I'm grateful to him for delousing the Labour party and kicking out Corbyn, disagree with some of his policies and am only lending them my vote until we have a centre right party that I can vote for in all conscience. So yeah, I'd call that pretty neutral.

We seem to do this dance in an annual basis Dollers. You start banging on about how I was supporting the Tories at the 2019 general election, I link the threads where I stated the exact opposite and the two threads where I resigned from the Tory party in 2017 and show that you actively replied to those threads at the time. You then say "well I can't be expected to remember every thread", eat sleep rave repeat. Shall I book you in to do this again next year?

Isn't this exactly what Sunak wants? All of a sudden people are talking about "Labour's £2k tax attack". Very few people, especially those who are not politically engaged, will bother fact checking. Labour are better off trying to change the conversation and go on the attack themselves.

Yep, its outrageous that politicians are allowed to stand up in front of such a big audience and peddle such unsubstantiated b0llocks. Point is though, as you say, for every 10 people that saw it, as with the media, I would think 1 will see the small print on page 12 a couple of weeks later.

Sunak probably 'won' the debate last night in terms of sentiment off the back of peddling nonsense soundbites and Starmer having very little reply other than 'yeah but the Tories'. Its a real sorry state for British politics.
