Apologies, I was on the Money Savings Expert website as this thread unfolded and I took a quick squint at 'what benefits can pensioners claim ?' picking out the first item on the list. Should have been more diligent and picked out Pension Credit.

[Edit: And in passing I noticed MSE claiming that twenty two billion pounds of benefits is going unclaimed so there are opportunities, maybe with the help of a Citizen's Advice Bureau, for pensioners to plug the gap that the Winter Fuel Allowance may leave. Although that won't help Reeves balance the books.]

Benefits are a nightmare and far too many people , not just pensioners , are not claiming things they are entitled to.

We were lucky, when my wife broke her neck and damaged her spinal cord . Spinal Injuries Association (SIA)were very helpful. Before she was discharged from rehab they sat down and went through what could be claimed. The oddest related to Council Tax, because had to spend thousands on modifications around the house our council tax was reduced to the band below what it was.

Income and savings were such that wasn’t entitled to a grant for any of the changes needed but they are for those in a less fortunate position.

Winter fuel allowance has been passed on to SIA as a donation, will continue to donate.

I think if you're a comfortably well off pensioner, then fine. The issue I think is for those pensioners who have just enough of a pension income not to qualify for means tested benefits. For those people, losing the winter fuel payment will mean a lot.

This.

I didn't vote for them (or more accurately, for their party) but after major disillusionment with the last lot I was resigned to giving them a fair shot.

So far my main impression is that they are focussed on what they can ban, how many they can throw in jail, and finding new and imaginative ways to tax us.

Not encouraging really.

The proposal, as I understand it, is to take the winter fuel allowance away from pensioners who are not receiving a means tested benefit (such as attendance allowance) but retaining the winter fuel allowance for those who genuinely need it. As a pensioner who is not too badly off I have always felt a bit guilty on receiving this allowance so, whilst I am not jumping for joy about getting less money, I see the proposal as fair enough.

The issue is to set up a new and separate means-testing framework and system will take time and money. Or it gets subcontracted to the kind of people who run the brutal assessments for sickness/disability benefits.

“the kind of people who run the brutal assessments for sickness/disability benefits.”

Is exactly what they’ve done, only they’ve saved on the outsourcing to the private sector. I expect there are millions who have an immaterial top up who were already struggling with heating bills before losing the benefit.

I’m slightly surprised with the ‘well I’m alright so it’s okay if they get rid of it responses’. Fortunately there’s been quite a backlash, so hopefully empathy will prevail.

You are misconstruing me slightly, my post was that I was comfortable and would not really miss it but I am glad that the proposal will not remove the Winter Fuel Allowance for pensioners getting means tested benefits such as Pension Credit (and Attendance Allowance does not apply in this instance as Pinewood and another poster later on have corrected me on.)

The point about removing Winter Fuel Allowance from pensioners who are just about getting by is valid but difficult to assess how many will be affected. The exchange with Pinewood was quite useful in this respect and brought out the point that many are not claiming benefits they are entitled to, and that help is out there from charities and voluntary associations.

'Kier' Starmer isn't Prime Minister, and 'Rachael' Reeves isn't Chancellor of the Exchequer.

You'd best pay more attention in your Year Three spelling lessons this term.

When Pension Credit was first introduced (and I suspect regularly since then), DWP have contacted pensioners to advise them they might be interest in claiming PC.

Responses fall into three categories:

1. 'I had no idea'. They then make a claim, successfully.
2. 'I've got other income, I know I can't get it. Fewer of these nowadays, as information about superannuation etc is now available directly to DWP so those calls aren't getting made.
3. The phone is put down on the caller, possibly accompanied with 'I don't want charity'.

What makes you think I voted Tory and I didn’t vote reform either

My point is 66 people out of a 100 that voted did not vote Labour

So as I didn’t vote Labour and 66 people per 100 also didn’t vote Labour there is a common theme between me and the 66 people

What is so difficult to understand about that

It's pretty simple, whoever you voted for didn't get as many votes as Labour.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Course it’s not irrelevant

Yes there are in power but they are hardly the party of the people, like they think they are, when 66 out of every 100 people DID NOT VOTE FOR THEM

You're overestimating how much of that percentage care about politics at all, in all honesty
