Question for the quorn munchers on here on 13:22 - Feb 11 by monytowbray | Of course I am. Would be a bit weird if I wasn’t with my post history. Only thing I sadly still have to make an exception for are my acid reflux meds* *now that’s how you start WW3. |
No offence, but I've not taken a great deal of interest in previous veganism threads on here as they generally resort to some numpty replying with 'YEAH BUT COWS TASTE GOOD THO..' before a tedious and entirely predictable argument ensues (if the couple I did see are anything to go by). Good luck to you with it. I found cutting out meat was the easy bit, and the majority of my meals are still plant based, it was the wider dairy products / sauces etc I found limiting. As I say, there's definitely more choice now for those that want to do it which is a great thing.

Mate, vegan cheese is a glorious world these days. I suggest diving in.

Not sure about this. The supermarket vegan cheeses are rank. Cashew cheese is a different ball game but has quite a different texture to cheese.

It's the 1 true compromise that remains IMO. A mate of mine invested in a vegan cheese business about 5 years ago so I've tried LOADS of it, and I can't get on board. Great for you if you can though. I'm convinced they'll continue to improve in time as I have tasted some marginally better ones recently but some still taste like a**e.

I don't think I will ever switch to vegan cheese. I'll use much less of the normal stuff though.

I just can't get on board with it. Weird texture and weird flavour for me. I do love cashew cheese but it's not a like for like swap. That doesn't bother me too much though, never really dug melted cheese anyway.

I swear by that low cal spray now. https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/274089279 10-20 sprays to cover the pan, depending what you're cooking, and 1kcal per spray. Vs a tablespoon of oil which usually comes in around 60kcal and as mentioned full of fat.

Looking at just calories is very one eyed. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using olive oil, especially on a vegan diet. You probably need the fat.

Indeed. Sure you don't want to deep fry everything but if if you're having a meal that contains no fat anyway, olive oil is not going to do any harm. Everything in moderation.

Agreed. A tablespoon is also quite a large amount of olive oil, probably only need half that and then it'd usually be eaten between two of us.

I don't tend to count calories to be fair, but I do use little olive oil in my cooking. Vegetable oils I don't touch, not convinced they're good for the ticker and they make me feel like sh1t. Like most things it's about moderation and balance. I'm lucky that I love fruit, veg and carbs, and on the rare occasions I do eat meat I make sure it's good quality & lean. Watch saturated fat & sugar consumption and eat loads of veg, can't go too far wrong. The war on salt is going to be the next big trend apparently.

The war on salt is long gone, 15 years ago the fsa guidelines on prepared foods were at well over 1g per 100g, now they are down at 0.6g per 100g which is pretty damn low and why so much food tastes of nothing these days.

A huge amount of vegan cheese is vile and it sticks to the roof of your mouth, they haven’t cracked a decent commercially produced pizza cheese as yet although there are a couple of good burger slices around. Best ones I’ve tasted are the follow your heart ones, particularly the smoked Gouda style. As for cheese on a pizza the best I’ve tasted was at a vegan pizza restaurant in Camden called Purezza. 100% vegan pizza restaurant and the developed their own cheese made from fermented brown rice, honestly the best and most realistic I’ve tasted

Oh man Purezza is the best vegan pizza I've ever had. So good. The FYH ones are good. I need to try the pepperjack one, they have it in Hanks. I'm a fan of the following if anyone wants to try any (or tell me they weren't convinced)... Sidenote, Sheese is bloody awful. They use it on the Papa John's vegan pizzas and I wish they didn't.

I think the next war may be superseded by a war on energy drinks - by my entirely non-scientific calculations I’m expecting a raft of health problems to be traced back to excessive consumption within the next 10 years which will make a daily pack of fags look like having an apple a day

Think you pretty much win the battle if you avoid processed foods, cook with fresh and vegetable based ingredients. Can't really go wrong! Can't see how a good lashing of maldon salt can be bad for you really, again, it's usually processed fats, sugars and salts rather than themselves. As a food producer I'd also say if you want to improve diet, the quality of the vegetables you use is the main way to do that.

Quite. Some of the most dishonest marketing strategies are these 'low fat' claims. A quick glance at the nutrition label tells you that product usually has 3 times the sugar of its full-fat options.

The sheesh they use on papa johns pizza is a bespoke product they had made for them and it’s still bl00dy awful. I work with a lot of fast food guys and it’s telling that the bigger market leaders haven’t launched vegan (McDonald’s, Dominos) because they know what damage it will potentially do to their brand by not being as good as their standard products. I was with Dominos last week looking at vegan products and they were using sheesh and they don’t like it either, it sticks to absolutely everything including the wheels that they cut the pizza with. If only vegan cheese had come on as well as the plant based proteins that are very comparable
