What's the best way of dealing with a neighbour who has clearly moved their personal smoking area in their garden closer to our property
Weve been neighbours for over 10 years. Always got on well. Never really mixed but say hi etc and have a brief chat over the fence
Anyway we dont want to ruin that relationship but the smoking of weed has caused issues as we are having ti close our doors and windows as the smell is so strong it's actually making us feel sick. We are also due to welcome our niece ( wife hasnt been able to babysit due to lockdown) during the summer and we are concerned by the smoking of it.
I appreciate it's there own personal garden and what they do is entirely upto them... it's just with summer on it's way we dont want to have to keep closing doors etc each time he goes out in the garden which is basically every couple of hours a day ( hes house husband)
Depends when they're doing it. I'm smoking a fat one in my garden right now as I'm typing this but I wouldn't blaze it when I can hear the neighbour's kids playing next door in the garden in the daytime. There's a time and place. This time of night it would be OK.

We have had this problem with a neighbour who had finished a spell in Chelmsford, even with doors and Windows closed it seeped thru the extractor fan blades and stank out our kitchen.
I politely asked him to smoke somewhere else as it is illegal to smoke in communal areas, signs saying this everywhere, didn't need to get into what he was smoking. But that'd be slightly different to your situation. But perhaps you could leave it as your smoke is coming in our house, as though he's smoking ordinary cancer sticks.
Said neighbour has now moved.
Depending on the building layout, it can be pretty awful having neighbours who smoke - up there with having ones that are noisy IMO.
I have had smokers living in the flat below and due to various shared risers, regularly had my flat smelling of smoke because of them. My bedroom is also directly above their balcony and in summer nights would often end up with a room stinking of smoke when they had a few late evening cigarettes.
Had a similar situation in an old place - some kind of hole in the wall between the two properties that I could never locate (possibly under the floor) that meant the bedroom often ended up stinking of smoke.
If it's smoking outside, I think it's basic consideration to avoid stuff like this — I would hope if anyone was told about it, they'd be understanding enough to change what they were doing.

To the op, empty yourself a three litre coke bottle, hack the bottom off it, grab a bucket of water, a lighter and some tin foil and sit in your back garden impatiently tapping your fingers on the bucket.

Over here, I may as well have been living next to a sawmill from the constant noise every weekend!!! So maybe this influenced my "it's their property they can do what they like" response.

I think there was a time when half the country's homes had plastic half bottles lying about everywhere.
My mate used to keep one in the bathroom for when he had a bath.
If a friendly chat over the fence doesn't do the job -
Unless there are hosepipe restrictions in your area, buy a lawn sprinkler (if you don't already have one) large enough to cover all but one distant corner of their garden, and turn it on when the need applies. Sorted :)

One World Cup I had arranged for a group of friends to come over for the afternoon, watch England play etc.
I went to a fair whack of effort with the [new] flat TV set up in a large gazebo, BBQs on the go and a couple of fridges outside...
feck me if half an hour before kick-off a neighbour one side had 2 workmen show up with power tools to start a big job in her adjoining garden.
And then the other side my other neighbour started fiddling about with one of his motorbikes - he had 12 in his massive shed.
I ran round to one side and told the wife who said she'd sort him out, which was a result, and then ran round to the other neighbour's to offer the workmen free food and beer if they could to do the job another time. And to watch the match with us of course.
They took me up on the offer thank feck and all was saved, but it was looking bad for a while.
I couldn't believe there were actual people who weren't glued to a telly that day and it hadn't occurred to me to have to ask around first.

"their property than they can do what they like", well no, not really. Even Class Bs don't qualify as being ok cos it's in your own garden!
I used to like a puff and am more than happy for people who still do. (I do still like the smell too as it goes, but that's neither here nor there).
But if you don't smoke yourself then any smoking is horrible to have wafting through your windows at home. My neighbour smokes outside and I close my bathroom window cos it reeks.
To the OP just have a civil word saying what you said here.
"Hello mate, how you doing etc. Just a heads up that your smoke is coming in my home. Can you do us a favour and maybe smoke down the bottom of the garden please?"
It's not hard and he's not about to argue given the nature.
If he then chooses to be a pillick about it then that's on him, not you.

Are you certain it is weed that is causing the problem? Not doubting you just asking. Ultimately yes once it is on their property than they can do what they like, but if it is inconveniencing you that maybe have a gentle word. Don't know your living arrangements but really wouldn't have thought that any type of smoking outdoors would impact you all. Having said that if it is then light a bonfire out the back of your place if a gentle word doesn't work.
As an aside, while I try to get on with my neighbours I have come to the conclusion they are all complete d!cks!!! We have fallen out with ours as I got a WhatsApp message over 2 smart cams I setup on my property. These have been in place for over a year, and the neighbours were informed. The WhatsApp msg was that they were overlooking their property and they were concerned about us recording their children (who btw are best friends with my kids)!!! What was implied really got my goat, until the following day that the same neighbours had guest over for drinks in their garden against Covid restrictions.
Hi Wicked, yeah definitely weed as I've always known he's done it, but it's never really been that potent that we've had to close doors and windows etc.
I'm wandering if the other neighbour had a word as I would guess he was smoking by them, hence he's now come across the garden closer to our fence.

Have you got a dog? If yes every time it has a sh*t throw it over the fence into their garden then if they complain say 'well you smoke dog sh*t, I throw dog sh*t', That worked for me once with a neighbour who kept smoking weed while I was trying to enjoy the summer sunshine.
Admittedly the argument did get a bit heated once and I did apologies when one badly aimed throw resulted in the sh*t landing on his garden table and he threaten to phone the police, although for some strange reason he didn't. However after 3 weeks of sh*t throwing he stopped smoking it in the garden
