Radio Suffolk ... no more 16:29 - Aug 11 with 11727 viewsDJR

as the Proclaimers might say.

I emailed Marcus Nash first and then Scott Paul to request the club retain BBC Radio Suffolk for the audio coverage, just as Forest TV last season used BBC Radio Nottingham for the audio coverage last season.

The following response from Scott Paul (thanks, but no thanks) indicates they won't be shifted whatever we say. It's clearly engagement with the fans but only on their terms. And the reference to a careful process of consideration hides the fact that they didn't even consider fans who might be listening on audio only until it was pointed out to them.

"Whilst I understand your disappointment at the switch away from BBC Radio Suffolk commentary on iFollow, I do thank you for your continued support over this, past, and seasons to come.

As with anything of this nature, a careful process of consideration was completed before the Club decided to proceed with an in-house commentary team. Chiefly, this decision was formed due to the phase-out of iFollow that is planned towards the end of this campaign, when the Club plans to introduce TownTV.

The move away from BBC Radio Suffolk has allowed us to introduce a more contemporary show presentation, where co-commentary from current players and recent ex-players allows the Club to provide a unique voice/perspective to proceedings. In turn , this will enable us to convey more key Club messages to a greater extent than we would be permitted via BBC Radio Suffolk

As you will have noticed from comments during my recent interview, Glenn Wheeler (our chief commentator) has been briefed to commentate with a more radio audio-descriptive style in future, which will only improve as he voices more iFollow presentations. I am sure that people soon become more accustomed to his commentary style and be able to enjoy the Ipswich games that he brings to life.

Many thanks for your email and observations."

That's a decent response from them to be fair.

As much as I think Brenner's an excellent commentator, and I enjoy Mick/Mathie et al as the sidekicks, they do make reasonable points here. Unfortunately, running things more professionally will include some things we're not so keen on at first. At the end of the day, they are doing what's in the best interests of the club long term, IMO.

I think you mean commercially rather than professionally, as their in-house product will never match the professionalism of Radio Suffolk. The funny thing in this day and age is to offer an inferior product and then expect people to pay when they experiment with trying to make it better.

I appreciate that most of the complaints are from audio only listeners, but I thought the commentary for the TV version was actually decent for the forest green game.

The issue isn't with the TV coverage, as the commentary doesn't really matter because one can actually see what's going on, but listening on audio, I had no idea what was going on at FGR.

Oh, just remembered, Freeview channel 720 I think will also give you BBC Suffolk with full match commentary, so that's what I'll be doing in future (just need to re-route a tv ariel cable first), so the club will be losing my (albeit) small amount of revenue in the near future.

Not sure if that's the case all over the country though?

Living in Kent, I can pick up adjoining BBC county stations on both Freeview and DAB radio, but I'm too far away to pick up BBC Suffolk.

Maybe the club should offer Brenner a deal to leave Suffolk and work with their in-house team. Solves both problem :o)

So, Radio Suffolk has a different contract to Radio 5 live who do broadcast live commentaries? I find that strange.

Think that's correct, club rights are different to overall league rights.

Out of interest, Phil, has there ever been a breakdown of the numbers on a Saturday who listen to the I-follow audio-only coverage (available in the UK) and the numbers who are able to watch the game (those overseas)? I appreciate VPNs may slightly distort the figures, but maybe this is the sort of commercial sensitive information that is not made available. And I assume many more will watch midweek games because they are often available to view in the UK.

Some don't like change, and that's fair enough. But this feels like a bit of moaning for the sake of moaning. Give the new team a chance.
Brenner has had a tough job commentating on some poor years worth of football and I really haven't envied him in recent years. Especially having to speak to Lambert on the weekly. That said, its got to the point where he sucks the fun out of a goal with his commentary, and you question whether he wants the oppo to win.

I'm all for change here.

Let’s be honest, it’s been a sh*tshow so far. From what I could tell on here, most of us have listened to the away commentary.

DH has been around for years.

But this has annoyed me.

Unnecessary dig at people who have entirely good reason to be unhappy with the service.

This is the problem on here at times, people leap in with an opinion despite having no idea what they're on about.

Thanks for following up and a shame the club are digging their heels in on this. I've been using ifollow since if launched as I'm based overseas and having radio Suffolk alongside the video feed was great. Guess like everyone else, we'll be listening to opposition commentators or on mute as I've done the since the first half of the Bolton game!

Really hope the club have a change of heart on this.

No, I don't think any figures along those lines have ever been released, I'm sure for the reasons you suggest.

Perhaps a TWTD advert during the half time interval. Add a nice little jingle too.

I have no idea if that is right, but it is strange that the BBC rights vary. Who actually grants the contracts? The EFL?

Opposition commentary won't be an option next season when it's no longer on I-follow. Instead, we'll be indoctrinated Pravda-style into buying from Planet Blue and will be forced to listen to erectile disfunction or male nether region grooming adverts at half time.

If people actually listened to what Brenner says, there are countless examples to show he favours Town. I like that he tells it how it is rather than gushing about us. And the rise in his voice conveys his genuine excitement at a big moment, IMO. I think some get a bit butt-hurt because it happens when the opposition score as well as when we do and their egos are so fragile they want someone to convey their misery.

Well they've got what they want now. Having listened to some of the other biased-to-their-own-clubs commentators I'd rather Brenner's honesty.

Some people like Brenners commentary, some don't. Each to their own.

The desire to knock people who have a different opinion is probably a bigger indication of a fragile ego than a distaste for a particular style of commentary though.

For years I was frustrated by not being able to listen to the Radio Suffolk commentary when I lived away from the local area. I used to attend the occasional away game but not every one, & very few home games. Theres probably quite a few thousand of you that recognise that frustration. Why can't we listen to a football commentary of our team from anywhere when we pay the BBC licence fee? I have moved back within the local area, so have no idea if the stupid ban on access still applies? It probably does & needs to be sorted asap.

Its still does and it is totally annoying.
It should be available as part of the license fee for sure. Simply do not understand it.

I also sent an email to Mr Nash after Saturdays awful club commentary. As of yet I still haven’t had a reply and guessing I won’t get one. I have subscribed to audio for a few seasons but will be cancelling my subscription tomorrow I am afraid. As someone else mentioned up thread it’s not just the superior commentary that Brennar gives its the feel of a piece of Suffolk when you are away from home. Really disappointed but guess with so much change the club won’t get everything right!

I'm not bothered about people not liking his style, it's the blatant lies that he favours the opposition. They're very different things.

I thought TV commentary was ok on Saturday, not great and to be expected when pulling in a young 3rd choice keeper to co commentate. Commentary is a job and not something anyone can just do, and Brennar tends to be good at helping those.

But I hadn’t realised, and seemingly neither had the club, that they were sticking this out on the audio feed. That just isn’t going to work, radio commentary can overlay TV pictures and it may be sub optimal at times - but tv commentary is never going to work audio only.

Just ask any blind person following a game of football whether they’d listen to 5 live or the tv commentary on a big game. It’s setting the commentator up to fail and they need to put the Suffolk feed back down the audio only option.

i dont think he favours the opposition, but you simply cant deny the screams of almost excitement when the opposition score, over the seemingly dull tone he takes when town score.

And if you, as i know you love to argue, really cant see this, go and listen to the goals from saturdays game. Morsy got a "oh and thats a lovely finish" in a tone that had me, my missus and sister all sat 3 meters at most from radio not realise we'd score..... to FGR 1 st goal, then their offside goal.... he squealed like a pig.

Go and listen before you come back trying to argue against that.

We’ll be good again... one day

He does and there's no getting away from it.

But of course all he's really doing is creating an atmosphere for the listeners. As we've established ourselves it's a different ball game, so to speak, to TV coverage and the enthusiasm is a major part of that.

Trouble is when it's our team that's just suffered a goal in the wrong direction we tend to take it personally and that bleeds into our perception of the commentary.

I curse him, or anyone, who sounds remotely excited when someone scores again us and it's hard to care at that moment if it's his job!

We were also spoilt for a few years with Baxter and Beattie who also took it very personally when the opposition scored.

I used to like that biased vibe of two Town fans conveying the game to the listeners!
