Give John McGreal the job… 14:56 - Dec 14 with 5174 viewsArnieM

He’s as much chance as any other applicant , and he does actually know the Club and what the fans crave …. He can do no worse than the utterly depressing list of candidates !

Just get it done so we can move on .

He really wasn't. The jury was out for many after he took us so far backwards last season. After Bolton at home 3 months ago was when I decided he was not the man. He did give me some hope he might prove me wrong for a short run of games after that but that was only a glimmer of maybe he might be up to it, not a hero-worship "he is our saviour" that seems to have come from some on here.

Oh, and no, we won't go up this season. We will do fantastically well to make the play-offs. That is how far backwards Cook took us. He came in with us on decent form and only just off the play-offs.

So he took us backwards with a squad who mostly now ply their trade in the lower ends of league 2. Then you gave him until game 6 in the league with a complete new squad before deciding , we then lost 2 in the next 10…

The only Muff in Town.

That first sentence isn't really true though is it?

Dai Cornell
Mark McGuiness
James Wilson
Gwion Edwards
Jack Lankester
Teddy Bishop
Flynn Downes
Andre Dozzell
Troy Parrott
Plus other loanees
Plus all the players we kept

Are all in our division or higher.

Peterborough and Cardiff reserves don’t count as higher, Lankaster is still injured, Gwion is mostly a Wigan ressie, Teddy plays for Lincoln who may well be league 2 next season.

Flynn and Andre wanted out, I will give you Wilson.

Others are League 2 strugglers or unattached. not to mention when asked to up their levels they downed tools

Cornell and McGuinness have played 15 and 14 first team matches respectively this season.

Not that it especially matters. Whether it's Ipswich Wanderers or Ipswich Town, the job of a manager when they come in between windows is to improve what they have in front of them. That involves making judgements about what's likely to motivate them, what their strengths and weaknesses are and how best to utilise them tactically. Cook got it wrong and that's on him.

This narrative that's developed where the 2020-21 squad were the worst footballers to ever live, impossible to motivate, playing badly to spite the supporters, is utter hogwash, a tale Cook made up to cover his tracks and bought by people who wanted to believe. In reality, it was a squad of players that was competitive enough to have already won 15 games that season, with a very gentle run-in to come. It contained 6 players that Cook deemed good enough to form part of his squad this season, another 6 currently playing for teams higher in the league than we are. There were lots of levers to pull to get another 5% out of them (compared to Paul Lambert, fgs) - tactics, coaching, motivation - he simply got it wrong.

Wouldn't have agreed before Saturday, but the capacity he then showed to change things on the hoof (sorry!) was encouraging, so I'd give him a chance. Only thing is that the Jan window then becomes problematic.

You mean he threw Norwood on. Brilliant!

How do you know he can do no worse? Also, I don't think the links to young up-and-coming coaches like Anthony Barry sound depressing. They sound quite interesting to me.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Yeah, I think people are overreacting a bit to us going 442 for a bit tbh.

You continue to ignore and twist data.

He had far more than 6 games and repeatedly showed he couldn't do it. The backwards progress that was evident on that Bolton match in conjunction with his abysmal display last season did for him for me.

GameChanger had more patience and there was a glimmer that he might improve things. But he clearly could not as recent games show.

Had he managed a full season at his current ppg he would accumulate 59 points. Last season that would have been 15th, 12 points above relegation and 15 off the play-offs.

He started off his time here blaming the players, he carried on by blaming the changes and then, more recently he was blaming the players too. The players he has brought in.

The idea the squad were not good enough shows that Lambert was a brilliant manager who should have been given longer. Are you Marcus Evans?

Which ability to think on his feet & willingness to actually change tactics/personnel in time during a game was certainly more than Cook managed in months, and which got us a point, so comparatively speaking, yes.

I agree, which is why I said "give him a chance" - I meant on a game by game basis, hence my additional comment that the Jan transfer window then becomes problematic.

Can we revise this sentiment now? I don't want to see McGreal's legacy tarnished by this lot - we need John McJesus, not McGreal.

Not sure what relevance your Jan comment has. The OP is "Give John McGreal the job… " and you replied "Wouldn't have agreed before Saturday, but the capacity he then showed to change things on the hoof (sorry!) was encouraging, so I'd give him a chance."

Sorry that sounds very much like give him a chance as in give him the job. He's getting games.

If we start playing like a team, maybe - but there is no way this is a standard we should be accepting.

I bumped it too, not to ridicule Arnie, but more to point out that we, as fans, are shockingly blinded by sentiment.

Thing is people can take the piss all they like . The amount of changes that keep happening at this club will result in what we are seeing . At some point this club has to stick with it and give it time and facilitate a gradual re build .

It’s groundhogs day ever f U c king season isn’t it .

I wasn't clear enough on what I meant, I agree.

The Jan TW ref was that the longer he went on doing game by game, the more difficult it becomes re which players to move on or bring in, as any new manager would obv want to sign his own, & the time frame to do so would clearly be shrinking all the time.

Decent form? That’s a really lazy view that doesn’t take into account how we were playing at the time. I think Joe started peddling that and it took like wildfire, obviously. We were terrible and didn’t fair much better under Cook hence the need for a re-set, which, by the way, was universally well received given the quality coming into the side.

Cook was 7 pts off the play-offs and on a win % of 48% since Bolton. 7 pts is the difference between a good and bad week in league one. Still, the boo boys have got their way.

Oh. Second half is starting…
