40°C on 22:42 - Jul 15 by J2BLUE | Thankfully I’ll be working from home in vest and boxers with plenty of cold drinks, a powerful fan and cold water to put my feet in. I hope anyone who needs to work in an office or outside manages to keep cool. Hopefully people will stay out of restaurants/shops and give the staff a break. |
Apparently you can cook an egg on a car bonnet at that temperature Don’t you try it though

40°C on 21:13 - Jul 15 by Chondzoresk | Yes. It is. Possibly 41-42 in the Peterborough area Tuesday. I’m concerned as my wife is a chef. The temps in the kitchens are phenomenal. But when the temp is 30 degrees Celsius at mid night is a huge worry. They are predicting this by the way and I’ll be sitting in my EV with air con on full tilt….in the nip. |
Not a bad plan that, especially considering the crazy battery charge % you can get in these temperatures.

Those odds are shortening. Which ever way it goes you can be sure the temperatures are going to exceed what many people can comfortably endure, theres nothing wrong with being prepared for that, looking out for others is just the right thing to do, i don’t believe anyone is crying about it, just concerned. I did a triathlon in Indonesia a few years ago. By the time I got to the run it was 40c and 100% humidity. I knew I was in trouble when the swim (in the sea) was genuinely warmer than a heated swimming pool. I was ill for about a week afterwards with sun stroke.

No thanks. I couldn't do that, I get horrendously sea sick even on a pedalo.

Do people *really* often go away on holiday and experience that sort of heat? I'm not the world's biggest traveler, so wouldn't know, but remember my last trip to southern Europe where it was 30 degrees each day and thinking that was baking. The most I ever experienced was while playing golf in the Australian outback on a course with tar-covered greens (to keep the sand in place!) and only lasting 20 mins in the low 40s. Just too much to bare - we escaped to the air-con of the club-house, but who has that in their homes here?

Taipans love golf courses, I always found. And scorpions. Best to substitute the nine iron, for a twelve bore! (not really, live and let live.)

No, it's a nonsense post from a poster with a long history of posting nonsense. We're currently on our 3rd official heatwave of the year, over 38 degrees in the Pyrenees this week and unlikely to let up in the short term. The costas won't get above 32 or 33. The places where the millions choose their beach holidays won't get near 40 degrees.

This is a thought provoking post, but I'm yet to nail down my conclusion from it.

Lovely part of the world. Spent a lot of time in days gone by, just over the border in Ceret / Amelie les Bains. Enjoy!

40°C on 22:49 - Jul 15 by jeera | You think the warnings are coming from TWTD? Seriously? As for climate change, do you honestly believe that's not happening yet? Have you seen what's been happening in Australia; the recent flooding, the bush fires there and in the US? Have you noticed the flooding in Bangladesh? You realise that real people are losing their lives and their homes right? Edit: "Crying". That's annoyed me. I never knew you were that fecking stupid or childish to be honest. I’m gonna give it my best shot J2 I’m more worried about irresponsible dog owners than humans. For humans it’s not beyond the wit of man to escape it should you want to.

There's a lot of carbon (and methane) locked up in Canadian forests, tundra and the ice of the permafrost further north. Major fires which can burn for a long time in those regions can release so much extra carbon into the atmosphere in one of the most dangerous positive feedback loops the Earth faces. The hotter it gets -> the more fires and carbon released -> the hotter it gets... These are deadly threats to life on Earth. I don't know what schools are doing these days, but it's this sort of basic science really ought to be the first thing on the curriculum.
