Worse. It feels Saudi Arabian. I don't think anyone supports vandalism or wouldn't support prosecution for damage but this seems much more about trying to make certain protests a matter of heresy. There are significantly lower punishments for physically hurting and even maiming actual living people.

I prefer: Don't keep playing up to populist sentiment if you don't want OTT w@nkers roaming the streets looking for a fight.

Seems like Labour support it too. I'm not sure it's needed, but it doesn't wind me up either. I suspect most of the BLM movement won't mind it either.

Labour have to go along with this to get elected. Or something. They're just as bad by supporting it. The point is that there are existing laws about vandalism and criminal damage.

I'd say vandalizing a war Memorial is worse than vandalizing a garden fence.

10 years in prison worse? That's massively subjective, which is the whole problem with such a special law.

Its also very right in left. If this law applied to snasging up pubs and train stations it might be fairer, if still extreme.

Ah, centrism. Price worth paying, etc. Let's see how many of the far-right yesterday get a decade in the nick.

It’s populist nonsense. However, it is also entirely academic so long as you resist the urge to get a bit rapey and/or commit criminal damage.

I'm starting to get that familiar nauseous feeling ... at a time when systemic inequality and the need for structural change has never been higher on the agenda, we see Labour heading back into performative yet ultimately bland and meaningless politics.

WT Actual F!?? on 16:24 - Jun 14 with 2129 views | gordon | There is already an offence of damaging property which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years. The point of briefing this to the Sunday papers was just a distraction from the right-wing riots and to try and create 'culture war' type arguments that the government can feed off of. There's no logical reason for Labour to oppose this as far as I can see, and if they did they'd just be walking right into the trap. *Not pretending to be a lawyer and don't know anything about the law so happy to be corrected by anyone who does! To be fair, they tried the alternative, and had some of the least successful elections in the history of the UK.

I wouldn't say 10 years worse. But hey, don't do it and you won't get 10 years. I'm all for toppling a slave trade statue, but vandalizing a war Memorial takes a special type of moron.

We have done next to nothing to address structural inequality over the past few decades. What's the point of voting in those who repeatedly do nothing but oversee it getting worse? It's delusional. And the worst thing to do is to go along with it or otherwise give those politicians validity.

That's why we need a viable alternative.

A "viable alternative" is an oxymoron in British politics. It's cosmetics. We need to change the discussion not pander to this lowest-common denominator nonsense.

Yes, the chances of anyone ever staying a day longer in prison as a result of this are pretty slim, I'd guess.

Speaking of which, The S*n this morning characterised yesterday's far-right shenanigans as an 'obvious and inevitable' consequence of the BLM protests. So yeah, moving slightly further to the left in our national dialogue might be an idea.

Despite the left not having been in power for 40-odd years, everything's the fault of those who want a better, fairer society. I wonder when the penny will drop for the man in the street that they're being utterly played. Not to mention their kids and their future too.
