The best appointment Sunak has made imo 14:50 - Oct 26 with 3034 views | GlasgowBlue | Andrew Mitchell is passionate about international development. Absolutely shameful that Johnson abolished Dfid though and the department downgraded to ministerial rather than cabinet level.

How many officers were sacked for gross misconduct?

The best appointment Sunak has made imo on 15:09 - Oct 26 with 2387 views | DJR | I agree that this is probably the best appointment. From what I can recall, he opposed in strong terms both the abolition of DfID and the cut in the percentage of GDP spent on overseas aid. Also below the belt is the classification of certain expenditure as overseas aid when it isn't really that. I donate to VSO and it is clear from a recent appeal that cuts in Government funding have impacted severely on various projects they are involved in with some having to be abandoned. Sadly, I doubt there will be much Mitchell can do to make things better but at least his heart is in the right place. [Post edited 26 Oct 2022 15:09]

For other misdemeanours and leaking to the press yes, but the words used by Mitchell were found to be as per the reported statements. Unless you disagree with the justice in the libel trials ?

They were found to be likely similar, I obviously am not going to read the verdict transcript from it - but he was clearly totally wronged by the police in this one

The burden of proof is lower in civil cases. Not worth paying heed to.

No. I haven’t voted Tory either national or locally since 2017. Since then the party has drifted further to the right and imo has forfeited the right to govern for a generation, whilst it figures out what it is supposed to stand for. But we have a Tory government for the next two years. And whilst we have a Tory government, there is nobody better inside the party to head international development than Andrew Mitchel. As per my op, he is passionate about international development, was a close friend and colleague of Jo Cox who he worked with in several projects and will do a better job than many of those appointed by Johnson and Truss over the last three years in a department that was downgraded and neglected since Rory Stewart was Secretary of State.

As stated above, this is unrelated to what was said by Mitchell, which thevjustice said at trial was accurate in the content reported. The pc tried to claim he witnessed when he didn’t.

He didn’t lose a libel case against the PC. He lost the libel case against Murdoch’s s*n. There was no proof that he did use the word “pleb” but the Judge ruled that “he probably did”. Yay Team Murdoch. In the aftermath it was found that the Member of the public who claimed to be a passing witness, was in fact a police officer who had lied. AM subsequently went on to suffer from severe depression and other mental health issues which he was helped overcome by Alistair Campbell amongst others. [Post edited 26 Oct 2022 16:49]

Doubt it. I'm fairly sure Justice Mitting will have much better examples of his own condescension.

The best appointment Sunak has made imo on 18:26 - Oct 26 with 1715 views | Swansea_Blue | There's a regularly posted Iain Banks quote that springs to mind! In all seriousness, this shows some maturity to bring development back into the cabinet (even if he is a tvvat at times). Almost grown up - probably a fluke! I'm not sure how it squares with international aid cuts, but let's see what the delayed economic statement comes up with.

I wasn’t aware of that. I knew about the Libel case he brought against the Sun but I wasn’t aware of the counter libel action brought by the PC. So apologies for casting doubt on your post. My point still stands that there was never proof that he used the term ‘pleb’ and it came down to the Judge believing the PC over Mitchell. Phil’s link even says: “ However, later CCTV footage of the event appeared to throw the police version into doubt. A subsequent police investigation called Operation Alice found officers other than Rowland, including one who was not present during the row, had lied about it. ” Back to the op. I’m sure you would agree that Mitchell is by far the most suitable candidate in the PCP for the position he’s just been appointed to?

Things are even worse than I thought. A very large proportion of the "aid" doesn't even leave the country. https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2022/oct/29/billions-in-foreign-a If you read the article, you will see that Dishy Rishi is the culprit. With Sunak still in charge, and a £50 billion black hole, even appointing Jesus Christ as Development Minister wouldn't to make things any better.
