If cars were simpler.... on 08:12 - Sep 6 with 1881 views | solomon | It’s generally the more expensive cars that last longer, with the exception of most Japanese and South Korean brands it’s always been that way. That of course doesn’t help those with limited budgets, and as such the industry needs to build cars better as a whole.
If cars were simpler.... on 08:28 - Sep 6 with 1838 views | ElephantintheRoom | Excuse me but cars are made to last - i once had a citroen xantia that cost £150 and went over 150,000 miles with no major issues - a fine example of low-cost motoring with little ego attached. and as it was diesel it was doubly good for the environment - no greenhouse gases - and unlike shiny-new range-limited electric cars it already existed so made no demands on the environment or non-existant infrastructure - nor did i need to hypocritically use another car for long journies.. My current citroen is 50 years old - and isnt really a status symbol - more a hobby and design statement from a bygone era. My other car is an audi that will comfortably outlast me and be zoomng around long after the current generation of impractical electrics are on the scrapheap - so again very good for the environment - especially as anything you or i do is utterly irrelevant to what is going on a little further east..

Cars these days are superior to the one's in the 70's and 80's not just for safety. Bodywork on these cars ended up with more filler than a Z celeb and we used to use a magnet to check the bodywork. Various 'scrappage' schemes over the years also helped remove most older cars off the roads and replaced them with better quality and less polluting vehicles.

That may or may not be the case but does not alter either that they could be massively simplified nor the status symbol aspect!

If cars were simpler.... on 09:14 - Sep 6 with 1699 views | ElderGrizzly | My car had an AdBlue issue last month, where the AdBlue tank was full after a top-up, the car decided it wasn't full so the car will stop working/not start within 600 miles if not rectified. You fix it by topping up the AdBlue, which the garage (and I) had done, but the car said it hadn't been. So you basically had a car mechanically sound and could drive but the "computer said no" and would literally disable the car in 600 miles. £850 to fix it 3 months out of warranty... Forgive me if I’m wrong, but your comments seem to infer this has more to do with class struggle than the actual technical aspects and subsequent benefits of modern day vehicles?

Regardless of my posts it is self evident that there is a class war aspect on all social matters.

Actually, this seemed to me the first of his posts that I can recall which *wasn't* about "class war" - more to do with environment & simplification. Totally agree with the simplification issue - was really shocked when I had to give up my 20 yr old Landie last year (the last of 4 I'd had over the previous 30 years) & move on to my first ever 'digital era' car - a Freelander. The amount of completely unnecessary digital knobs/switches/options/fiddling required is ridiculous - actually potentially dangerous I'd say, as you have to fiddle/search for things like wiper options, headlamp options etc. Since watching 'Vigil' on BBC1 on Sunday nights currently, I also wonder whether you'd have sufficient time to open the windows before the electrics got wet, should you be unfortunate enough to end up in water!

You’ll find this in time to come won’t be the case. The new Lucid car will travel 500miles per charge. Companies such as QuantumScape are in the midst of testing 10 layer solid state battery cells which will revolutionise batteries as we know them. [Post edited 6 Sep 2021 10:48]

I think what your looking for is in effect a 21st century version of a Trabant. Simple transportation and basic mechanicals are done, it’s dead technology.

....which leads on to. Can the challenges of climate change be addressed without looking at underlying class struuctures particularly if they are expressed through the acquisition of stuff?

Why would the windows be different to an ICE?

This is likely it (well at least initially in the West) but for all (so across classes).

I visited the Ford factory in Dagenham as part of my engineering course. There was a presentation on car design as well as a tour of the assembly line. The presentation included the topic of Obsolescence. All cars were designed to fall apart after 5 years to ensure that new cars were bought. They were designed to rust. The Mondeo (late 1980's) was the first Ford to have the bodywork galvanised to prevent rust. A cheap simple process. All cars have this now and it's why they last longer. Volvo were galvanising their cars in the 70's.
