Me neither, Vic. I don’t think I’d appreciated just how much the game had moved on in the last 20 years. He’s every inch the ‘modern’ manager.

He is happy to explain, in clear and eloquent terms, why things have happened or might happen — rather than obfuscating. Obviously there'll be plenty held back but in terms of the detail and insights he is willing to give up, about tactics or a decision he made or how a game has played out for example, he's unlike anything we've had in years or possibly ever. |  |

it also goes to show how he coaches and nurtures players, asking about Wolfie's interests outside football shows he tries to understand the mentality of the players and what makes them tick, very much in the vein of Ferguson.
Also goes to show how lazy soundbites by Lambert about his nature proves that he had no interest in improving players, just thought the odd bark and public condemnation would yield results.

Thought his comments about everyone having to be running at all times was maybe obvious but also enlightening. Showing players the reason for the runs and why they need to be doing it, individually but then collectively as well is how teams become good.
No walking about - or not knowing where they need to be.

He's got the opportunity to not only achieve on field success with sound backing but also to shape the infrastructure of a modern football club the way he thinks it should be. There will be very places he could do this.
It's unlikely he'll get a similiar opportunity in the short term and if you go much higher then you'll only get to tinker round the edges of the footballing infrastructure. I think in the short to medium term it would take an opportunity in a secure Prem club for him to be tempted . | |

Funny to think how the initial reaction was pretty underwhelming and there were plenty of people saying he lacked charisma. Don't judge a book by its cover innit. He's like a dictionary - not the most exciting to look at, but full of knowledge. Whereas the last guy was more of a jazz mag - promises much on the cover, but ultimately isn't the real deal. I doubt he's the type who would jump quickly, even for a really big money move. He knows that he's developing a squad here and developing himself as well, and it's the PERFECT opportunity for a talented young manager to build from a low pressure third division job through two promotions at a club with relatively big resources, patient loyal fans, and a history as well. |  |
