William Hill report people are betting on table tennis and German horse racing whilst the football is off.

Desperate times call for desperate measures I guess.

Someone needs to try and load a gambling account from a cr card to see if it has. Be very welcome if confirmed.

I always thought the government used gambling reveune s an unofficial way to further tax the most vunerable, who have nothing to lose, so gamble? Recession coming - watch a load of new bookies and pawn brokers open up.

I've been betting on US, Australian, French, German and Swedish racing.

Also football from Belarus if I see something I like in play which is rare.

Gambling in the UK using a credit card has definitely been banned

"The Gambling Commission has announced a ban on gambling businesses allowing consumers in Great Britain to use credit cards to gamble. The ban, which comes into effect on 14 April, follows the Commission's review of online gambling and the Government's Review of Gaming Machines and Social Responsibility Measures."

No bookie would risk still having the option to use a cc on their sites/premises - they'd be prosecuted & out of business.

Serious question J2 - I know you were talking a while back about making a go of it as a pro gambler. I presume that's taken a nosedive because of all this?

Some UK bookies have moved abroad to try and evade taxation (tho punters themselves are no longer taxed directly).

Not really. I've had to adapt and change my playbook a little but i've been doing much better than I imagined I would when all this kicked off. As sports begin to return it's a big relief but i've been doing ok. I said this wasn't forever and this crisis has shown the value of a secure job. I guess i'm bundled in with the zero hours lot who don't qualify for anything at the moment so I haven't had much choice but to adapt. Thankfully it's gone okay.

Surely playing the stockmarket is just another form of gambling?

It is gambling with an element of research. I have been waiting for over a year to have time to sort out a proper investment stratagory. My investment was up £1,400 in two weeks but dropped about 80% of that in the last two days.

Fortunately I'm in it for minimum five year period so the daily up and downs are irrelevant but still fun to monitor.

Done plenty of research but find it amazing that even now there is little regulation to stop "professional" advisers from writing tips in the money columns stating how good a company's shares are whilst selling their own personal shares in that company immediately after. Surely thats dodgy dealing.

Those with zero hour contracts are entitled to furlough and receive payments based on the same month’s earning from a previous year, or their average monthly pay during the 2019-20 tax year - whichever is highest.

I take it you're unemployed currently?

Not all forms of gambling are created equally though!

Surely the art to being a good gambler (if there is one!) is only making the bets that you have an edge in? Gambling my 401K on a coin flip isn't the same as buying up a few Amazon shares (it is much less fun than a day at the track though!)

Depends what you call "having an edge". I'm reasonably knowledgeable about racing and bet on that; have only made a loss in 1 year out of 14, and that was only about £50! Other people who can spot patterns in say football ht-fts would say they had an edge.

I agree that all the online "games", casino etc are rigged in bookies' favour - worse than genuine "gambling" really - punters don't stand a chance.

Many unsuspecting ordinary people playing the stockmarket will, I fear, have been caught out by Covid_19 - who would have thought that people would largely stop driving, planes would stop flying & that oil prices would drop through the floor? etc etc. Whereas other investors of course will have made a killing (sorry) from the very same things.

"Don't forget your shares may go down as well as up!"

That really would have been a mug bet!

Reminds me of happier days - had £2.50 e/w on ITFC to win the Prem title the year we went up - at odds of at least 1,000/1 (may have been more, can't remember exactly). As it was e/w, would have got a massive payout for 3rd. Remember getting home from away match we'd been to on last day of season, and as we turned into drive, heard the Liverpool (? was it?) result on car radio - cue groans! but also laughs - it was still worth it just for the sheer excitement & fun of the ride!

Last year we did a semi cruise like thing while we were in Alaska as many places are only accessible via boat or seaplane.

I'm getting non stop emails from Holland America Cruises to try and convince me to book a cruise in 2022! B1tch, purrrlease. You think you'll exist then and I'll ever see my trip or money again?

On a related note, a lot of those coastal Alaskan towns rely entirely on the summer tourist trade. No cruises this summer, combined with their geography mean they are going to be fooked. Tourists want to drive to Ketchikan? Tough tiddays, their road isn't connected to the outside world. I suppose that'll be the case for many remote tourist hot spots around the world.

Same for all tourism really - I do feel for them - their year's income depending on (obviously currently non-existent) seasonal trade.

I don't see how any of these places will survive, especially in the areas where the actual resident population is small.

Joint stock enterprise has its origins in people banding together to fund sea voyages in the furtherance of overseas trade, without it people like NewcyBlue would not have a job today. Stocks and shares arise from a desire to bring some degree of providence and pulchritude to communities, nations, and nowadays, global industries. There have certainly been shysters who have piled in and the funds have often been misused but the aims have generally been to provide jobs for employees, products and services for end users and profits (as an reward for risk taking) for investors.

Gambling has no such beneficent aims, the idea is for there to be a winner and a loser and I fail to see how even the most cursory reflection on these two very different activities cannot distinguish between the intentions, practice and, when investment is well regulated, the very different outcomes.

Pulchritude?! deserves an upvote all of its own (I might even look it up later!).

Fact is that "investing" in the stockmarket (and I'm talking about individuals here, not pension funds or large enterprises) involves taking risks with your finances, with the aim of gaining financially, whatever fancy label you wish to put on it.

As for outcomes, people may gain more from, e.g. horseracing betting than they do from "stock enterprises". I know you're not old enough to have personally experienced the Wall Street Crash, but just ask Facters!
