East Anglian Albion Fairs/Fayres/Faires/whatever 11:54 - Jan 29 with 1297 viewsBLUEBEAT

Any of you lot ever attend these?

A mixture of the old ways and low scale music festivals

Anti-establishment and a hint of moonchild happy clappy oddity

Was young but went to a few due to hippie minded parents

Totally forgot about them until I saw a button badge in an antiques shop window

Rose-tinted maybe, but hazy recollections are somewhat magical/mystical but with an underlying level of menace

Rougham Tree Fayre/Fair I recall visiting with parents (CND-types) which all made sense to me from my nascent leftist punk rock activities at the time. Face painting, patchouli, stilt-walkers, long-haired types, chalkboards outside tents advertising opium and LSD and some gnarly bikers out front acting as event 'police'.

Went at least a couple of times (the latter involving us taking my very straight laced school exchange student from France, who was suitably bemused).

Day trips to Strawberry Fayre in Cambridge and another where Hawkwind (natch), Ozric Tentacles (ditto) and Antisect played in Norwich '85?

Good times and was chatting about Rougham only two days ago to some elderly friends who were regular at such events

Remember them well. Went to Rougham Tree Fair and also the Earth Fair at East Bergholt. Musical Youth played I seem to remember. It was when there were convoys of hippy types travelling around the country which at the time was a bit of a story.

The Convoy... I went to see The Damned (first gig after they'd sacked the Captain which didn't go down well with the masses) at the Nostell Priory weekend gig/festival where The Convoy ended up overstaying their welcome and it being the first big police action against them (I'd nipped off to see Flux of Pink Indians, Chumbawamba and a very young Bjork wth her pre-Sugarcubes band Kukl, in Liverpool by the time that happened).

Was going to go to Stonehenge '85 as well, but then the Battle of the Beanfield happened so...

I have magical memories of these events....

A circus act that the organisers put on in the main dome in early afternoon featuring a bloke called Psycho the Clown who spewed out a constant stream of the foulest profanities that had the Hippy Earth Mommas covering their precious kiddies ears

The Viking Village....a re-enactment of "typical Viking Life" by a huge gang of drunk people who just got p1ssed and punched 7 colours out of each other...that kept St John's Ambulance busy for a while

And my own contribution... I was the proprietor of The Cosmic Fallout Munchie House, a catering stall selling omelettes to the starving /unwary. On reflection, it was such a shame that all the staff had no idea how to cook an omelette

There is a travelling exhibition that documents the Albion Fayres. Loads of photos and posters etc.

It's normally at the Weird and Wonderful Wood near Haughley each year.

Was there a commune in East Bergholt early 80's or maybe it was the fair you mention? I have vague memories of parties there, may have just been the one, I dunno but all rings a bell now.

Old Hall.... A big old stately home as I remember

It hosted the Bergholt fairs
