Statistical comparison with last season 15:08 - Aug 6 with 41333 views | Nthsuffolkblue | If we take each match as a comparison replacing the promoted and relegated teams with those directly replacing them ... After 1 match we are +1 point, +3 GD and -1 GF. Today's match Forest Green replace Gillingham who we beat 0-4 away so we that is our "par" score. Of course, we won't improve/match every result all season but overall we need to be up something like 20 points by the end of the season. I will try to keep tabs on this after each match.

Love this keep going. In your first post you used +- for the goals against. Am I correct to infer that we are actually -28 goals compared to the same set of games last year rather than +28? Ie we’ve conceded 28 less by comparison. It really is some going to build performance in the way we have so far. O.G.A.A.T

We have scored 28 more than we did in the equivalent fixtures (unless I have made a mistake somewhere). We have 36 better goal difference which means we have conceded 8 fewer (again unless I have made a mistake somewhere).

Projected total based on current PPG / GPG... 40 matches: 94 Points, 91 Goals 100 Points 100 Goals still just about on...win our remaining 6 games and score 21 goals in them; we've managed 4 against Charlton in our last 2 games against them, so hopefully make a start on Saturday. 30 matches: 86 Points, 86 Goals Above were the projected totals when I did a breakdown of a few stats at the 30 match point (comparing the first and second thirds of the season), and a comparison with last season, so can see at a glance the improvement from the last 10 matches... 1) Scoring 1.98 GPG compared with 1.46 GPG last season. (30 Matches 1.87 - 1st 15 Matches 1.87 / 2nd 15 Matches 1.87) Last 10 Matches - 2.30 GPG 2) Conceding 0.80 GPG compared with 1.00 GPG last season. (30 Matches 1.03 - 1st 15 Matches 0.80 / 2nd 15 Matches 1.27) Last 10 Matches - 0.1 GPG 3) 2.05 PPG compared with 1.52 PPG last season. (30 Matches 1.87 - 1st 15 Matches 2.2 / 2nd 15 Matches 1.53) Last 10 Matches - 2.6 PPG 4) Effectively about 21 points "in hand" on our points total for last season (70 points from 46 games = 61 from 40...currently 82 from 40) So to summarise, really can't complain about the position we find ourselves in for the run in to the end of the season - great run over the past 10 matches has put us in contention (Our run of clean sheets had to come to an end at some point - unfortunate that of the last 6 goals we've conceded, 2 of them have been scored by fog, and the last one by wind!) This was my closing comment after 30 matches... "Really hope we can turn this around, and still make a challenge for the automatics, but these numbers show it's a bit more than a "blip" or loss of form. Key priority seems to be a bit of back to basics tightening up the defence, as we're scoring consistently and have improved on last season in that area." Congratulations to the team for achieving both of these, and hopefully go on to finish the job. Regardless of what happens this season, everything is heading in the right direction - we're managing 4 points for every 3 we obtained last season, scoring 4 goals for every 3 we scored last season, and conceding 4 goals for every 5 we conceded last season. And finally, an off the pitch stat...this is being watched at home games by the highest number of fans through the turnstiles for nearly 50 years COYB [Post edited 11 Apr 2023 8:20]

Wednesday will still drop more points. They weren't great last night, Rovers with over 60% possession. Wednesday 5 points from 9 I think. Wednesday three tough games against Exeter, Shrewsbury and Derby. Both Exeter and Derby games at home in front of a crowd that are anxious and will turn on them at the first mis-placed pass or missed tackle. Barnsley will take 7 points from 12 I think. They are showing signs of having a bit of a wobble, and for us, in our current form, are there for the taking. They will try to go toe to toe with us, which plays right into out hands, 0-2 Town. Peterborough on the final day will have a say too, at which point Barnsley will be playing in a dead rubber. 1-1. If I'm right, and I hope I am, that leaves us needing four points from the next four. Nine would be better. Plymouth have 3 home games on the trot now. The Championship, will go to the final game I think.

I think the League 1 title is Plymouth's to lose. If we win 3 or 4 of ours we might pip them. The important thing is what is in our own hands and to keep ahead of Wednesday and Barnsley. 2 wins will probably do that for us. Add in at least 1 draw should be enough. Problem is the next two will be the most difficult. If we do win on Saturday it keeps the pressure off us. If we lose or draw it puts it on the last 3 matches. It being Peterborough of all clubs and especially on the form they are in, I can't begin to think what the result will be. COYB - put a bogey side away and win it!

Just for completeness: 46 matches +29 pts, GD +46, GF +36. Enough for promotion and that's what really matters. Not quite enough for 100 points nor the title. Congratulations to Plymouth - a phenomenal effort. The Mariner dream ticket. Only these questions left. Do I repeat this next season? And if I do, what would be most appropriate? A comparison with the teams that finished in equivalent places last season? A comparison with the most recent time we played the same opposition regardless of how long ago? Or not to bother.
