Unpopular opinion but John Lewis's Christmas ads are really cheesy. Sorry but I really don't find them sad at all. This one is just about some Bloke who's crap at skating
The irony of The Guardian bashing one of the few examples of British Co-operativism still holding its own in the Late Global Capitalist era.
And the even bigger irony of all the people in the comments bashing it as an example of "cynical corporatism" who don't even know that the John Lewis Partnership is wholly worker owned.
Every penny given by John Lewis to this, or any other, charity initiative comes directly from the workers. They produced it, they earned it, they choose the charities they support, and they take less profit related pay as a result.
And, to change the focus onto a smaller character in the advert: not enough is done to communicate the good things that can happen in Social Work. Every time there is a failure we hear about it, rightly. But the woman on the doorstep with the anxious teenager is a Social Worker, representing the millions of hours they put in, including to try and match children who have been rejected, or labelled as too difficult, with someone who will try to make then feel like the centre of their own world, again.
It seems appropriate to post this song, seeing as GlasgowBlue started the thread. It's incredibly rare that artists in any field speak up for the work that good Social Workers do, and it's nothing short of beautiful that Glasvegas did:
Lyrics:
When your sparkle evades your soul I'll be at your side to console When your standing on the window ledge I'll talk you back from the edge I will turn your tide Be your Shepard and your guide When your lost in the deep and darkest place around May my words walk you home safe and sound
When you say that I'm no good and you feel like walking I need to make sure you know that's just the Prescription talking When your feet decide to walk you on the wayward side Up upon the stairs and down the downward slide I will, I will turn your tide Do all that I can to heal you inside I'll be the angel on your shoulder My name is Geraldine, I'm your social worker
I see you need me I know you do

I like the advert, as I do most of their Christmas adverts over the years. They're generally well meaning, well written and often throw up a great new take on an old song. Lily Allen's "somewhere only we know" for example. I read the Guardian article a few days ago. I don't particularly disagree with their thoughts on the song this year, but overall, I like the advert and what it stands for. I also think the Elf and carrot ones are good too. It's Christmas. Time to think good thoughts. (If we can)
Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

Innit. Can't help but feel people overthink this sh1t, it's just a TV advert for a retailer. There seems to be a lot of snobbery around it and people keen to find fault every time it's released. I never see such creative critique applied to anyone else's adverts.
Christmas TV / film / music is very much a part of Christmas to me, and I would include some of the ads in that. Nothing says Christmas like that Coca-Cola truck though, that's the OG. Either way, it's too early for Christmas chat, I don't engage in it until at least December and my tree is certainly not going up until at least the weekend of 3rd / 4th.

I just don't think it's that good.
I am another sucker for a Christmas ad and love seeing them all.
