What's Sunday football like in Ipswich? 23:07 - Dec 4 with 4132 viewsFrimleyBlue

Drove past a park earlier and it was sad to see 0 football being played. Its the 2nd weekend of no football.

I remember many moons ago. Football on a Sunday was like church for some. Yet here in surrey it seems to be dieing off.

What's it like in the town?

Not Ipswich related, but in the 90's I used to play Saturday and Sunday football over at Enfield Playing Fields, must be 15 or so pitches there, and getting a pitch was like gold dust. Absolutely rammed both days. Used to be a waiting list to get a pitch. Now at weekends, there might be 3 or 4 pitches in use at a time. Definitely dying off.

SEH league was also the Little David league as well from memory. I'm pretty sure I played against Stow Vandals back in the day, presumably in same division. Other great names I recall being Bristar, Armada, Northam Celtic, Italia.

Oxborrows, Man On The Moon, Silver Star all had very decent teams mid 90's

Again, not Ipswich related, but illustrative of the general decline, the Telford Sunday League which used to have 6 divisions now has 2. Most of the teams are still 'pub representative' though.

Quite a number of the longer standing Sunday teams switched to Saturday when the local FA created a new Step 12 Saturday league just before Covid hit.

yup, my end, Gypeswick, had 4 pitches, Chantry Park several. Some are now 'wildlife' areas, i.e the council don't touch them! No more marking out, putting up/taking down posts, and maintaining changing rooms, which was a feature of some parks. Gypeswick when I was a kid had a bowls green!

Worst job was digging out rock hard footings for goalposts in August. I can still feel the clangggg and vibrations when I banged my spade down!
