Didn't realise he'd scored so few this season, six in total, including one against us in the Papa Johns. But he is viewed as one with a big future. Wouldn't count towards the EFL squad at 19, so perhaps a useful addition to come in and out of the side.

I thought that in the Championship U21 loans from the Prem did count. If we could sign him on a permanent then he wouldn't though.

C'mon Hambo, you've not got long to smarten yourself up on all the new rules and misconceptions. We've not been down that long have we?

I’d be thoroughly underwhelmed at that - but then I’m basing that off his last loan spell.

It was the first name a member of staff told me and my mates on the night we won promotion. He was absolutely battered, so might not be anything in it. I do think he fits our current model, played a lot of football for a 22-year-old, one that could be seen as an investment.

Yeah, I can definitely see him fitting the current model. And under McKennas management, no doubt things would be different this time around.

The last time we loaned a promising young Spurs striker he was underwhealming.

I just can't see us in for him. Has he really improved that much since we had him? Anyone brought in will be with a serious view to bridging the gap to the top 6 and I just don't see him being that sort of player.

We’re after Jerry Yates - Blackpool… on 12:25 - May 21 by FevsBCFC | How much do you think Adam Armstrong will cost? Do you think he is a realistic option for yiu? 1) he might not even leave Saints now they’ve been relegated. 2) there will be bigger suitors for him than Ipswich (and Bristol City - if we were in for him…we aren’t). The pecking order in the Championship is quite tough to negotiate, Mark Ashton will know that, and how frustrating it can be to be waiting on players only to find them go elsewhere. As for Yates, the time to have gotten him was summer 2021, but Blackpool got promoted, which put a premium on him. If he goes, it will be around £3m, someone allegedly has bid £2.5m already. He’s a good Championship striker, playing in a poor side. He would be ideal for lots of Championship sides. |
As Bristol City know from experience though, when you are spending money you get players you would not normally expect to get. I'd imagine we will be in the top 8, possibly 6 in this division in terms of spending this summer. [Post edited 22 May 2023 8:13]

Young players quite often have iffy first loans then subsequently step it up. Similar could be said about McGuinness really - he won't be the same player we had on loan as a 19-year-old. [Post edited 22 May 2023 10:51]

What you then have to evaluate is whether you got quality for the money you spent…not just focus on the fee, but the wages too. Our three loanees from Chelsea…(alleged wages) - Tomas Kalas £8m and £25k p.w - Kasey Palmer £3.5m and £20k p.w - Jay Dasilva £2.0m (option to buy) and £15-18k p.w Kalas is about to leave for £0 unless he accepts a huge wage reduction, but we will never get a fee for him. Palmer left for £0 (nominal fee) with us paying up some of his wages Dasilva just been released You can argue the merits of the value of their performances, but over 4 years they’ve cost us circa £25m. That was not the model they were bought for. All were expected to lead us to promotion (mmmm, huge gamble) or be able to be sold for a profit. You are better off finding the young nuggets out there, that can cope of Championship level, Webster and Brownhill, get them young and under-priced.

You have to do both really - you can't just rely on finding cheaper younger players and them all doing well - you need some of those players with lower floors as well and whilst the fee for Kalas high I always think if someone has been a regular for 4-5 seasons then they've been at the very least a worthwhile signing. There is a big elephant in the room re Bristol City and their playing trading with Covid and the bottom falling out of the Championship market

Plus Ashton took them as far as they could go. For a club that has barely bothered the Championship and were regularly akin to Burton or Rotherham, he transformed them massively and raised the whole club's ceiling. It takes a club like that a while to adjust when their success is rapid and inflates their standing artificially so much. Some of the deals he got for players move in and out were frankly sensational value and kept them up there, but so much comes down to external factors as you say. It's in sharp relief to Evans with MM vs Evans without here.

I wasn't talking about Armstrong per se, simply saying we are going to spend decent money this summer. Outside the parachute clubs we will be able to compete with anyone. You just have to hope you back the right horses with that money.
