The first game of the season is always good but this is something else 07:31 - Aug 7 with 835 viewsSteve_M

Normally, even the most cynical of us can allow for a little optimism on the opening day that this season might be half-decent. It doesn’t always last very long (20 minutes in Hurst’s case) but that optimism is still there.

This is bigger, put the takeover completely to one side for a moment because it will be the first time many of us will have been to Portman Road in 17 months and even for those who got to a game last year that looked an odd experience. For many of us football is what we do on Saturdays, the match, the pub, the people - from those we know well to those whose names we still don’t know after chatting to them at games for 20 years - and it’s left a big hole not being able to do that.

As an opening day for optimism it’s up there with the first one after promotion in 1992 sand 2000, Magilton’s first game as manager and the first game of Mick’s first full season (except for that one being at Reading…) for anticipation.

And then, consider the takeover, that for the first time in 14 years (arguably 20) we have forward-thinking, seemingly competent owners looking to take the club forward again and - most importantly - with a plan to do it.

See you there, I can’t fking wait. COYFB.

Indeed Steve, I have also been blindly optimistic over the years with a few nagging doubts thrown in, but this seems different. Having seen the players in pre season I genuinely think we have got the base of a very good squad, cannot wait to get to PR later, its going to be rocking.

Might see you in the Greyhound later

Well said Steve.

I’m absolutely gutted I can’t be there today which says a lot considering I wouldn’t have had to think twice about missing games in recent years.

Even walking past the ground on my way from the station felt good today. Just need to avoid the worst of the rain now which might be easier said than done.

Great post.

Two elements to this - firstly, a big step back towards normality as we pull out and away from the pandemic; very much looking forward to lunch, beers and talking b0llocks all afternoon.

Secondly, of course, the chance to actually reconnect with my club; the excitement of having owners who are proactive rather than reactive, and players who actually want to be here.

It's been a long 15 years, and an even longer 18 months. Let's hope that today is the start of the road back.

I echo that. Leaving in an hour. Even the rain can’t put a dampener on this one!
