In my opinion the 'optics' of him overruling the Tories and heading off to Egypt, whether by 747 or rowing boat, is the sort of challenge to the status quo we need to maybe generate a last ditch effort at saving our arses.

Absolutely. I’m not a particular fan of COP, as they’ve had 26 and not made anywhere near enough progress. But it’s essential to keep trying I’d have thought.

Sunak appears to be quite muddled and contradictory in his approach. Rolling back on the lifting of the fracking ban was good news yesterday, but then he does and spoils things again. (See also his stance on integrity, followed by reappointing Braverman). There’s no way prep for the budget (where he’ll have loads of support) should be prioritised over this imo. I can only assume he doesn’t think the largest challenge of our time is important.

Apparently his predecessor would have gone, how useless do you have to be to be less functional than Liz Truss ?

Did she actually say she would?

Even if she did though, this poem springs to mind -

Matilda(1907) - Hilaire Belloc

Matilda told such Dreadful Lies,
It made one Gasp and Stretch one’s Eyes;
Her Aunt, who, from her Earliest Youth,
Had kept a Strict Regard for Truth,
Attempted to Believe Matilda:
The effort very nearly killed her,
And would have done so, had not She
Discovered this Infirmity.
For once, towards the Close of Day,
Matilda, growing tired of play,
And finding she was left alone,
Went tiptoe to the Telephone
And summoned the Immediate Aid
Of London’s Noble Fire-Brigade.
Within an hour the Gallant Band
Were pouring in on every hand,
From Putney, Hackney Downs, and Bow
With Courage high and Hearts a-glow
They galloped, roaring through the Town
‘Matilda’s House is Burning Down!’
Inspired by British Cheers and Loud
Proceeding from the Frenzied Crowd,
They ran their ladders through a score
Of windows on the Ball Room Floor;
And took Peculiar Pains to Souse
The Pictures up and down the House,
Until Matilda’s Aunt succeeded
In showing them they were not needed;
And even then she had to pay
To get the Men to go away!

It happened that a few Weeks later
Her Aunt was off to the Theatre
To see that Interesting Play
The Second Mrs Tanqueray.
She had refused to take her Niece
To hear this Entertaining Piece:
A Deprivation Just and Wise
To Punish her for Telling Lies.
That Night a Fire did break out-
You should have heard Matilda Shout!
You should have heard her Scream and Bawl,
And throw the window up and call
To People passing in the Street-
(The rapidly increasing Heat
Encouraging her to obtain
Their confidence)-but all in vain!
For every time She shouted ‘Fire!’
They only answered ‘Little Liar’!
And therefore when her Aunt returned,
Matilda, and the House, were Burned.

Here are the words from the BBC report:

'Mr Sunak's predecessor Liz Truss had been due to attend the conference.'

Lots of tables at CoP27, plenty of hiding places, she would have gone.

According to Newscast on BBC1 about an hour ago, she was gonna go for 1 day & 1 night.

Beats no days or nights I guess.

This is the most open of open goals. Let him go and add prestige and represent us and the commonwealth.

Just once again shows how power obsessed the Tories are. Can't possibly allow someone someone outside of the party to do something they are more than qualified to do.

To not attend something like this shows he's not fit for office. At the next election we need to crush the Tories.

Truly impaired.

As the cabinet minister with responsibility for the environment will be attending there really is no need to either the PM or 'Chas' to be there.

It's a weird time when I agree with Nadine Dorries.

At least we know her motivation is purely loyalty to Johnson.

A Tory doing the right thing for the right reasons would be scary.

Truly impaired.
