ITFC Players you have met and thoughts 11:20 - Oct 23 with 7136 viewsDecageBruce

I just wondered with the vast amount of long term supporters here which ITFC players people have met throughout their time and how they came across.

I played youth football with John Wark's son for a few years and he used to come and watch. Apart from struggling to understand what he said sometimes he was a top bloke.

I used to coach kids with David Barnes who was one of the nicest guys I have ever met. At a time of my life when I was in need of help he took me under his wing and was a real help.

I met Keiron Dyer a few times around Ipswich as he was breaking into the team and he was always a bit of a berk but I think he has changed a lot now from what I see and hear.

I met Gwion Edwards a few weeks ago at Morrisons in Sproughton, he was working behind the deli counter doing his actual day job.

A few over the years as used to wait for them to get autographs - Darren Bent was lovely, thought Jermaine Wright and Marcus Bent were rude and arrogant. Matt Holland was lovely, told me not to be so nervous at a signing in Planet Blue! Fabian Wilnis was the nicest one, such a friendly person. Martin Reuser struck me as rather odd and all his family waved at me. Used to see Marcus Stewart around some of the pubs in town, like the Glasshouse that used to be in The Walk and he was always so down to earth and nice. Met Jim Magilton in McGinty's who was loud but pleasant. Also met a few at players' awards over the years. Damien Delaney and Connor Wickham were lovely people. Lee Martin was VERY shy but nice enough. Jon Walters struck me as a little arrogant but I was scared of him as I fancied him at the time! David Wright was lovely. Jamie Clapham was also pleasant. Think that's covered all the ones who I have met!

When Solar Superstore was on Sproughton Road (before the days of Morrison's), some players would occasionally be there for autograph signing. We were told that Warky, Butcher and Osman would be there.

My dad took me down and as we went down an aisle, I could see Osman and Butch with a curly dark haired man in the seat with his back to us. I approached them and embarrassed my dad by saying 'Mr Wark, could you sign my autograph book please'. On him turning around and seeing his face, it turns out he was the photographer and Warky couldn't make it after all. That was a giggle.

Kevin Wilson took a shot during a training session which nearly broke my arm behind the goal and spoke with Romeo who was charming. Around the same time, Terry Butcher's late son would often ask me to kick a ball with him when he was a toddler.

Spoke with various players on Saturday nights at the First Floor Club/Liberties including a worse for wear David Linighan who was tolerant of me if not coherent.

Alan Brazil and I crossed paths several times, not least when he was at the Blackadder. Bumped into Dozy and Kiwomya at the Boardwalk and Blackadder, giving the latter a bear hug in the 1992 celebrations.

Shared a discussion on all things ITFC with David Hill mid swim at Crown Pools. Ian Redford was in the club shop a few days before a Hospital Cup match and after a good chat, he confidently told me we would 'beat the b*****ds'. He was true to his word. We won 4-0. Such a friendly and intelligent bloke was Redford, a tragedy he is no longer with us.

Spoke with Jim Magilton in Brannigans during the first year back in the Prem and he was charm itself, even sharing a couple of rounds. Incredibly friendly guy who kept talking despite a mate of mine accidentally spilling the best part of a pint all over his nice shirt.

Spoke with Fabian Wilnis on the Harwich-Holland ferry and despite probably scaring him in my stupor, he was a top fellow and chatted for a while.

Had a few nods and hello's with Simon Milton over the years. I like to think he recognises me from the quizzes I did down there from time to time but he's probably just being nice.

As for the current lot, I probably pass them in the street and don't even know it. Oh, Luke Chambers was in the queue at the barbers in Tacket Street but had his head in a car magazine.

My uncle was reserve goalkeeper in the mid 60s- Dave Bevis.
Talking about Solar...we went to SolarBowl and played in a lane next to Boncho! Nice guy.
Sir Alf used to buy his fish and chips from my uncles shop on Bramford Lane - Harvey's.
Funnily enough Sir Alf was my father's RSM while serving in Palestine... used to train with him in the regimental football team.

I used to play in the same indoor cricket team as Alan Sunderland. This was after he had retired and was running the Halberd. Was a really nice guy.

I took John Wark, Terry Buthcer & a youth player I don't recall out clubbing in Plymouth when we played a friendly there (part of Mariner deal). A girl asked me if she could dance with John, I said yes in exchange for a snog...... she got the dance!
Back at the hotel Sir Bobby & Charlie Woods were in the reception drinking with the air hostess from their plane. We had a drink & chat with them before I departed.

Met Jason de Vos in Malaga a fair while back. He was a great bloke. We had a drink and spoke about his time with Town. Said that Joe was a great man manager and Magic had a football brain beyond his years.

I have met a few over the years and most memorably "Bacon & Eggs" (as SBR used to call them) several times. Both really friendly blokes.

Kevin Beattie used to come and watch my son's youth football team (Woodbridge Town) most Saturdays as his mate's son used to be in the team too. Had many a touchline conversation with him. He did end of season presentations too.

Allan Hunter attends the church down the road from me and have shared many a chat with him over coffee afterwards.

David Best was town goalie when I first started going to PR. He came to train our village kids once. I was the keeper and so chuffed when he once said "great save boy"!

My son & I had our photo with Matt Holland when my boy presented him with the M.O.M. champagne after a match. Matt, of course, was brilliant with the kid and chatted for a while.

As a boy, I used to deliver Colin Viljoen's newspaper when he lived in Ufford and desperately wanted to see him, but never did!

Finally, I met Jason Dozzell in the lounge at PR a couple of years ago, but he was somewhat grumpy as Andre never made it off the bench.

Bryan Hamilton was the first player i met, way back in the early '70,s. Was in Christchurch Park with my dad, remember him taking a few minutes of his time to chat to us.
Trevor Whymark, nice guy, took our Sunday League team for a few training sessions when he was a player/coach at Diss.
Mark Venus, Simon Milton, Warky, Gareth McAuley, Mickey Stockwell, David Johnson (2nd one), Big Al, Jason Dozzel, all came across really friendly.
Used to see the Beat in my local shop from time to time, always exchanged pleasantries.
Alan Judge when he played for Brentford. He was with some team mates taking a walk near the Belstead Brook hotel where they had been staying the night before our fixture. Really friendly lads. Some hours later, he was in hospital with a broken leg.
Highlight though was a 5 minute chat with Sir Bob on the training pitch behind the main stand. Signed my sons programme and was the ultimate gentleman.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Most of those that I have met was by collecting autographs whether as a 10-13 year old in the early 1960's or in my second (or third) childhood at meet the players shareholders meetings or getting my F.A. Cup Final programme signed over the last 15 years or so.

Got Bobby Robson's autograph as a player at WBA in early 1960's and again in his autobiography in 1982.

Got Ray Crawford, Ted Phillips, John Elsworthy and Kenny Malcolm to sign Rob Hadgraft's Champions Of England book forty years after I first got their autographs.

One of my prize possessions is a framed photo of me along with my son with Mick Mills, John Wark, Roger Osborne and The Beat (RIP) plus the F.A. Cup at a Blues Foundation 30th anniversary thing.

Had a chat with Geoff Hammond who was then at Man City in The Waggon And Horses pub in Woodbridge in the mid 1970's.

Played cricket against Roy Stephenson and David Best.

Steve's a great guy, lived a mile away from me in Carlisle, used to get the odd program from his Mum as my mate lived opposite his parents - He also used to come to his old school sports day and would chat to us all.

When I was a nipper about 88 to 90, they used to let a few kids lurk in that corner where the player's tunnel is to get autographs as they came off the pitch after warming up before the game. They were all nice but Warky and Frank Yallop would stop and have a chat most weeks, ask me how I was getting on at school etc.
Stuart Slater came in the place I used to work in a few times for meals and he was always a nice bloke.
Simon Milton ran a 6 a side tournament I played in at Portman Road a few years back, pulled off a worldie. Diving full length and tipped the ball round the post. Simon Milton was stood behind the goal watching the game and rolled the ball back to me and said "***k me keeper, what a save"

Matt Holland - lovely bloke. He still has nightmares about that Bolton 4-0 in the Prem.

The Beat - smashing

Chris Kiwomya - great chap. Very funny

Steve Palmer - a bit shy but very bright

Mark Brennan - good when he's on the sauce, bit quiet when he's sober

Neil Thompson - down to earth, relaxed and amusing

Hermann Hreidarsson - nutty but a good bloke

The only ones I've met who I didn't like were Danny Sonner, Chris Makin and Marcus Bent.

Have met loads of players over the years, and generally would say they’ve been alright (such as a whole train journey from London back to Ipswich chatting to Jay Tabb!)
One time we were having a drink with Gareth McAuley, Grant Leadbitter, Ian McLoughlin and a couple of others, and when we got a round in... Leadbitter asked for a fairly expensive bottle of Rosé... just before we left, McAuley slipped a couple of £20 notes to me quietly as he was embarrassed that they’d taken advantage of us as fans when they could’ve afforded it themselves.

I did some teaching at the club through the Community Department in the IT Learning Zone where I taught a programme called Playing for Success (PfS). We'd have players in to talk and work with the children at different points during the programme, they were all very good to be fair. However, one particular session Darren Bent and Darren Ambrose attended and the activity was focused on instructing a Roamer Turtle (a floor robot) to navigate an obstacle course. The pair of them were on the floor with the children giving instructions, advice and encouragement just thoroughly enjoying themselves, even if the robot failed in its mission. It was terrific to observe, the children loved it and just highlighted the uniqueness about what PfS was all about and the positive impact players can have.
