If they cut water and power, that's against international law as far as I'm aware.

They're allowed to defend themselves but what is happening now appears to be going overboard. It's a horrible situation that I'm massively conflicted over but I really can't justify what is going on now.

Dan, the problem is, some on here throw out accusations, without any foundations. As long as the likes of Starmer accept Israel's position, and he's the lawyer, not Noggin, then I'm afraid I take notice of governments, and not football supporters!

Unless his position (Starmer) has changed of course.

And then there is Russia and Ukraine, both probably committing terrible war crimes. But what happens, nothing

If Starmer’s the lawyer then he can tell us how the threatening and bombing of civilians fits within international law.

I think you’ll find that he’s much more of a defender of the already illegal occupation and oppression of the Palestinians than any legal or certainly moral arbiter.

"It's a horrible situation that I'm massively conflicted over but I really can't justify what is going on now."

that's where i think i am. my problem is, that when you set out the options, i honestly don't know what the israelis should do. a policy of containment has failed utterly. hamas is funded and equipped by iran with the intention of destroying isreal and takes every opportunity to kill israelis through rockets, terrorism and hostage taking. saying we shouldn't be where we are now isn't an answer. it is not credible to believe that hamas is open to negotiation or that they would demilitarise gaza. they are fundamentalists waging jihad and are intentionally dug in under and around a civilian shield. saying the un should intervene assumes the un could disarm hamas. what options now will realistically give israel security? unless we can answer that the conflict we feel over what to do now is irresolvable.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

It is incredibly difficult to send some detectives into Mariupol right now.

But there is a process for prosecuting war crimes after the event.

Unfortunately it seems there's a couple of posters looking to score cheap internet points on a serious thread about a tragic situation. They need to take a long look at themselves to be honest.

Correct

But it also time for Hamas to hand back the civilians it took as hostages, which is also a war crime. Under international law every country has the right to free their civilians held as hostages. Free those hostages and it changes the entire approach the international community will take.

I think you make a good point, but if the images of the Hamas atrocity are anything to go by, it doesn't seem likely.
This is only going to end badly.
I'm not even sure it’s possible to completely eradicate Hamas militarily, but the innocent lives that will be lost is difficult to contemplate.
Can you imagine being told you have 24 hours (less now) to leave your home? I of course accept the counter argument that the innocent Israelis weren't offered that option before Hamas attacked, but where are they even supposed to go?

Hamas have military units and arms within residential areas, including schools and hospitals, so civilians are used as human shields.

Hopefully when the ground invasion happens, the Israelis can hit more specific targets, and wipe out Hamas.

I suspect they'll all clear off once the ground operation starts. They'll just hop it over the border into Lebanon. As soon as IDF have gone, they'll come back. I dont think a ground operation is going to achieve its aim of wiping out Hamas.

And it's exactly why Hamas are telling the civilians to stay put. They care more about using them as shields over the tunnels than they do protecting the people. The Israeli response was sadly all to predictable yet Hamas still decided to carry out their barbaric act last weekend and put Gaza even more in the firing line in the process.

Not that this excuses Israel for their reaction but, for Hamas, the destruction of Israel is more important than protecting their people.

Israel is saying it is bombing Hamas. But when you see the pictures everything is flattened. A young girl having lost all her relatives. Whilst it was a teribble thing that Hamas did killing 1,200 people, also killing babies and beheading soldiers in my humble opinion killing everything in sight in Gaza isn't right. But then take the second World War where London was bombed, along with Coventry and likewise where we flatten places like Dresden in Germany. War unfortunately doesn't segregate the innocent from the guilty. The problem may be if it escalates beyond as Iran would like Israel wiped off the face of the Earth.
