"I thought we were excellent. Everyone can have their own opinion, but ours was a team that hasn't played together. We had (Scott) Fraser and (Rekeem) Harper in the middle of the pitch and I thought both were excellent on the night. There was a lovely balance in the team. I thought Aluko was excellent, (Conor) Chaplin was a constant threat. You can go right through the team.

"We had a lot of really good performances."

Eh? EH? WTF?

I mean, I don't think as a team we played all that bad, we just couldn't break down a team who were playing excellent counter-attacking football. Even your mate was loving it!

It wasn't terrible. It wasn't very good either.

I'm really surprised at Cook's comments though. The team we put out should have played them off the park and they didn't. They certainly weren't excellent.

Maybe just trying to give the players a bit of a lift? I mean, some of them haven't been getting many minutes. Hardly going to help them if he said they were bang average.

I think he also - with full knowledge and acceptance - sent out a team which lacked balance and it showed. The players are not going to make the most of the opportunity presented to them when, as a unit, we're lacking a key component or two, particularly in the middle.

I hear you, but surely there comes a time to say there's a lot of competition for places here right now and if you want to get into the first team you have to pull up trees in games like these to stake your claim.

No one did that, apart from Aluko (who's pretty much always around the 1st team picture anyway) and Celina looked a threat when he came on (and he's a starter)

Minutes in to people that needed them. I don’t think we were excellent at all, but I thought we were comfortable, especially in that second half.

Moments where we lacked that quality we know we have in the final third, but largely controlled that game.

I thought Colchester were well organised, compact, defended very deep.

Can’t read anything in to that game though, just feels like a glorified training session at times.

Sure, Cook’s bigging up the team and a few players who need a bit more confidence. But the performance was certainly a lot better than the result.

I thought Harper was pretty decent and Chaplin threatened but was off the boil yesterday. However, Fraser and Aluko really were excellent. Such good retention and use of the ball whenever they were involved.

He doesn't need to slag the players off, but he knows the fans are going to read/hear those comments. To suggest we were excellent is a little far fetched. Lambert treated us as idiots, don't need another.
Should have said that we fielded a team with many changes, so was always going to be a bit patchy. We won the game, which was our objective. No injuries and players got minutes on the clock. All in all a good evening.
Something like that anyway.

He’s usually pretty honest so maybe needs a bit of slack given. Just because Lambert routinely told us we were always playing great doesn’t mean we have to suddenly draw parallels. Another stick to beat Cook with.

And Colchester, like almost every team Town play against, were a "really good side". They aren't, or else they wouldn't be 17th in Division 4.

Upon reflection - we really didn't play that bad at all last night. Aluko was the real deal in the first half. All that was missing was goals, but the build-up play was pretty good for the whole game.

It was an OK performance.

Col U's best chances came from Burgess getting repeatedly done by Sears, and a Hladky cock-up right at the end.

Aluko good, as you say; so was Fraser, and whilst Chaplin's decision making/ final ball was bad, he got himself into decent positions a lot of the time.

Pigott was offside a LOT.

Pigott reminds me a lot of Daryl Murphy - I bet he's the perfect striker for games we need to play more direct football. I don't think he's a pest in the box that Bonne is.

As a Colchester supporter, I think all of that is spot-on, and exactly how I will remember the game. Aluko shone. Sears caused problems, specially in the first half hour. Colchester have the more confident reserve keeper.

Other things I noticed are (a) how little leg-room there (still) is in the Cobbold Stand. Glad I'm not six foot seven, and thankful the stewards let people stand. (Stewarding was generally very civil.)

(b) How different the Covid policy is from Colchester's. At Colchester, when you buy a ticket, the computer dots you around the stand as far away from a neighbour as possible. (Which, folks, with U's crowds is very thinly spread indeed!) Last night, about 600 U's fans were crammed into about 600 adjacent seats. Can't think it would have cost much to open up two blocks instead of one.

Think that's right, on another day it would have been a comfortable win. Got frustrating and frustrated towards the end. We were very dominant for the most part with Col U's chances on the break mainly from our errors or slips.

You boys were pretty loud, tbf; kept going most of the game.

Lots of anti-Ips sentiment (to be expected), surprised there wasn't a bit more pro-Col U stuff...

Your keeper made a couple of smart saves. Feel a little bit (but only a little bit) for your kid who missed the 10th pen...

I think we did alright given Col U had 10-men behind the ball at times. We retained the ball well, made some great incisive passes forward and great runs in behind. We hit the bar, had a goal disallowed and made their keeper work on numerous occasions.

On the flip side, we nearly threw the game away, Hladky was poor, Wolfenden could have done better on the odd occasion and Burgess got away with a couple too.

Overall, it was comfortable, lovely to watch marred only with some poor defending. Kind of the story of the season so far...

Totally agree about the singing. The young lads are excellent at keeping it going, but the repertoire is, as you say, too focused on the opposition, and really lame in places. (Bus-stop in Norwicjh?) I do like the singing about the Barside, by kids who were scarcely born when Layer Road was closed down, and 'Up the U's', the one tune that is unique to the club, did get a brief rendition.

Another thing I noticed yesterday was how few people were wearing 'colours'. (The camouflage worked then, I hear you cry.) Not sure if it was people trying to be 'casuals', or simply that everyone was hoping to go for a beer before the game, Portman Road actually being near boozers, - but it was nothing like the usual display you get at a U's away game.
