John Duncan RIP on 17:13 - Oct 8 with 1883 views | TheBoyBlue | That is sad. Was the manager when I first started following Town. Was unlucky to come to Town so soon after our glory days and I think fans had unrealistic expectations of him, but he did OK, especially when you look at the mess a number of managers have made of the job in recent years. Second that. I actually still thought we passed the ball pretty well during that period but he had an impossible job as did Bobby f. RIP John
John Duncan RIP on 17:35 - Oct 8 with 1776 views | BloomBlue | A very underrated manager. Joined Town when the club was at a low point especially after all the success and was often judged purely on previous managers and their success. His teams played good entertaining football. RIP

We were used to teams playing attractive football, but he had to manage in the face of us losing them all. As a result, we played a negative brand of football that brought less success. Sounds quite familiar really. Wasn't he a PE teacher after he left us?

WTF? I must have missed that, so it’s a bolt out of the blue for me. He aways came across as a nice bloke. Not the most dynamic or successful for us, but seemed a real gent. RIP.

John Duncan RIP on 17:45 - Oct 8 with 1710 views | The_Major | Yep, at the time we thought it was a period of intolerable failure, but with the benefit of hindsight, there were some memorable moments: Atkinson hattrick V Middlesbrough Baltacha debut on an absolute quagmire of a pitch when we demolished Stoke Beating a then top of Division 1 Nodge in the Simod Giving Man Utd a real run for their money on TV in the Cup His last game - romping into a 3-0 lead in the first twenty minutes at The Hawthorns. Sleep well, sir.

Same here, real shock. Awful news. Condolences to his family and friends. R.I.P.

John Duncan RIP on 18:04 - Oct 8 with 1628 views | Vic | He was a thoroughly decent bloke - and wasn’t actually that bad as a manager in the big scheme of things. Thoughts are with his family.

Yes. He went and worked at Hadleigh but got involved in coaching again later on. I actually remember John Duncan as a player. He came down from Scotland in the early/mid 70s and was a one goal in two striker for not the best Spurs team to grace the planet. With his mop of dark hair, he was not the biggest or the fastest, but he knew where the goal was. As a manager, I saw a lot of his games for us and bar the odd highlight, it wasn’t the best period in the club’s history. As recent managers have amply proven, he wasn’t the worst to manage this club and he arrived when the cub and football itself was in decline (hooliganism, Bradford Fire, Hysel and of course Hillsborough etc). Regardless, John Duncan always gave his very best for this club and supported it after John Lyall took over. I gather he was a lovely bloke and will always be part of the fabric of this club. RIP John.

I don't think he was a great manager, but the other candidates at the time were Charlie Woods, Keith Peacock, Ian Bowyer & Mick Mills (still under contract at Stoke). David Lowe, his best signing, unfortunately got a knee injury. David Linighan was a good signing, as were Brian Gayle & Neil Thompson. Most of his other cheap signings either weren't very good or were misused (Redford & Baltacha). I think people are only getting misty eyed about the Duncan years after nearly 20 years of largely dross under some even worse managers.

John Duncan RIP on 19:45 - Oct 8 with 1447 views | The_Major | Ian Redford (also now sadly gone, as we know) was my favourite player from that time, really well regarded in Scotland, and had been part of that Dundee United side who got to the UEFA Final, beating Barcelona at the Nou Camp on the way 2-1, after being 1-0 down up to the 86th minute. To be fair, it was a bit of a coup to get him. And, of course, Ron Fearon in goal occasionally. With the North Stand doing the "Here's Ronnie!" chant. On the other hand. Chris O'Donnell. HARBEY. And then there was Ulrich Wilson, allegedly turned back at Harwich at first because he was found carrying the most eye popping Gentleman's Leisure Reading Material from his native Holland.

I think you are mistaking people respecting and remembering the man for people admiring the team and the times. There were a few players we remember and a few highlights from that time but no one (as far as I read it) is denying that it was a lean time for the club and for us as fans.

Steve Palmer was a good signing too. And Simon Milton. [Post edited 8 Oct 2022 22:27]

Apart from Whitton and Goddard pretty much all the 1992 promotion team were brought in by John Duncan.

Great post which brings back some lovely memories. He brought some of my favourite ever Town players to the club, such as Ian Redford and David Lowe. I'll never forget Redford's headed goal from the edge of the area against Watford in the Simod Cup (the same night as David Gregory got a hat-trick I believe). Harbey was unforgivable, however I believe O'Donnell was already a semi regular under Bobby Ferguson, and was the first choice backup to Ian Cranson, who always seemed to be injured. Ron Fearon! Good times.

Good post and forgot he bought in David Lowe who was a fans favourite Considering the rubbish we have had to put up with over the past 18 years, that man bought in some quality signings……RIP

Steve Palmer was very poor in midfield as I remember, but he carved out a decent career primarily as a centre back after leaving Town. I don't think town would have been promoted under Lyall but for the emergence of Dozzell & Kiwomya, who were both more than a handful for the 2nd tier.

John Duncan RIP on 13:08 - Oct 9 with 932 views | The_Major | Didn't he also do some reporting on local matches in the early days of Radio Suffolk? I seem to have a distant memory of the Australian chap who presented the sport at the time saying things like "And reporting for us at Crown Meadow, John Duncan" [Post edited 9 Oct 2022 13:10]
