The negative side of our modern age with social media and all the mistruths, panic buying etc the facts get lost The positive side in our modern age it only takes a visit to WHO and other reliable sources to understand what is happening and what we can all do to stop the spread and make it manageable. Social media is spouting a huge amount of crap! So much so its unbelievable, drinking water to wash a virus into your stomach!!! Cmon.. Social distancing, respiratory hygiene, if showing symptoms stay at home. If everyone of us does this it lowers the infection rate.

You're talking as if social media spouting a huge amount of crap is new, it's happened since it was invented, the scary thing is how many people believe what's on there.

Sadly the way this is spreading everyone is going to self isolate. The Internet will be the one medium for us all to be able to socialise and call out our concerns etc.

No I am certainly not talking as if social media crap is new by any means. Just look at antivaxers, 5g etc, sheeples will be sheeples. The important thing is trying to redirect peeps to reliable accredited sources. Now more so than ever! We are all in this together and what the UK does has a big bearing on other countries.

That sounds perfectly sensible. Trouble is that the UK government isn’t adhering to WHO guidelines and have been criticised for what the WHO see as a slow response. You’re probably more closely aligned (assuming you’re in Ireland). But yes, if people want more information they could do a lot worse than look at the WHO updates though - they have loads of info. I’ve just had 10 mins scanning their site and there’s far more info than we’re getting.

Not convinced that UK govt has any bearing on other countries, other than to make them glad they don't have our government. I'd be a lot more comfortable with the situation here in UK if the WHO hadn't criticised govt policy, if govt weren't treating the whole thing as a media game, if govt hadn't executed a U-turn over the last 48 hours without any explanation (on herd immunity).

I don't think anyone is in denial, we know it's going to be a rough hard slog. We do though need to act as adults and deal with things, prepare as best we can and look after our family. The likelihood is we will get some flu like symptoms. Have a nice cup of tea and all that. We are all in the same boat worldwide. The virus is only half the problem, the other half is the mental strain of probable isolation at some point - and of course the financial implications - all of which is part of government thinking.

Sorry but that first sentence is completely wrong. Here in Ireland there is huge concern over people traveling back from the UK and in particular Cheltenham. We need all countries being responsible and aware of travel and how it impacts us all. In the last 24 hours several countries have closed their boarders. Imho Ireland should have done so 4 weeks ago, a lot of our cases to date are from people coming back from Northern Italy. Wherever you live, if you start seeing community transmission then be very worried.

Blimey. This is heavy sh*t. on 21:23 - Mar 15 by WicklowBlue | No Government can stop this, it's nature doing its thing. However I'm alarmed by the strategy the UK is taking, along with my fellow citizens. Allowing Cheltenham to go ahead was madness! Very risky to go for the herd immunisation strategy, it will overload health services. Just as happened in Italy who are miles ahead in this space...check out the podcast I linked as to how the Italian situation developed. |
As someone at the sharp end of this, I can't honestly tell you what the current strategy is. Mainly because the(mostly unprecedented in modern history) situation has, changed from hour to hour. I did a night shift last week where protocols changed 3 times over the course of 12 hours. I honestly couldn't say what the 'right' thing to do is because a) I'm a shop-floor worker, 'big picture' stuff is down to other people b) the world picture is still evolving c) I'm not an epidemiologist or virologist. What I can an will do is what I've done all my working life through hard and easy times - the job in front of me, to the best of my abilities. [Post edited 16 Mar 2020 6:59]

Just to correct a part of your post. Yes the symptoms are flu like, but please do not think that that this just flu... It will hit your respiratory system hard depending on your age profile, underlying illness etc. Had this very same conversation with my dad who is in the high risk category. If he contracts the virus it's likely to be game over... The WHO have issued guidelines for Countries to follow: https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/technical-guidan I'll leave it to you all to decide which country is following these guidelines and who isn't.

From what I was told by my local pharmacist today (bumped into him in Makro) he says it will massively differ from case to case and some people won't know they've even got / had it.

True, and discussed in this thread. All depends on age profile and overall health condition. But it has a higher mortality rate than Flu, anyone over 60 needs to be worried.

I have to ask again how can people be sure about the death rate? How many cases are asymptomatic - obviously they won't be counted towards the death rate. How many cases are mild are no longer being picked up by tests or reports? I am not trying to belittle the seriousness of Covid-19 and the importance of getting it under control - I'm just unsure how they can pin down the death rate with an illness which currently has so many unknowns.

Italy hospitals have reported the patients appear to be getting younger too. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/coronavirus-italy-update-young-p We’re playing with so many unknowns here.

It is not denial, it is fully understanding that the vast majority will, if they become infected, recover no problem, many will become infected and never realise. Life has to continue as best as possible within the information disseminated by the Government, extra vigilance if one has elderly relatives is a must, the elderly have every right to be concerned especially those who rely on home visiting carers. Screaming like a Banshee is pointless.
