Presumably this year it wasn't a problem because they were allowed to broadcast in the UK anyway.

Worked the year before too.

I have been using a UK card and a fictitious overseas address for the past three years and have watched every match home and away during that time for £19 a month.

Yes but the only reason Saturday games were streamed before was because of no fans.

We can now have fans back at 100% capacity so why should games still be streamed?

Because some fans live a long way away and can’t make it.

I’m guessing the vast majority of people who live locally will continue to go to live football. Whereas it’s not that simple for those of us who live some distance.

It just seems like dinosaur thinking for those who can’t embrace change.

As I said in a previous thread last season, charge people the same price to stream the game as it is to watch at Portman Road. It's then a no brainer if you are local. You will go to the game for the match experience. But for those supporters who can't make it then at least they have the option to watch on iFollow.

Surely it's a win win for the club as they won't lose revenue on the gate but may pick up additional income from those who can't make it.

If the EFL have re-imposed the blanket 3pm blackout, it's out of the club's hands sadly.

It’s not even the EFL it’s FIFA (or UEFA) and it’s been a rule for a long long time.

I've seen this elsewhere, but I don't think it's true or at least can't find any evidence on UEFA's website that it is? Seemingly UEFA allow member associations to impose a 2.5hour blackout on footballing broadcasting (including overseas matches) if they want, but it isn't mandatory for football associations to do so.

La Liga, for instance, has no such blackout and will broadcast all 10 matches from match week 1 with only two of them taking place simultaneously.

I could be very wrong but I think the nfl imposes a local blackout for transmission within so many miles of the stadium. Will this be possible to do so over here?

Are you still in London, Matt? If so, that's not very far to travel and only costs £20 if you pre-book a train from Liverpool Street or does circumstance mean you can't travel?

Personally i think we've become too reliant on TV and its part of the reason gates have declined. Its an interesting debate as to whether TV has made football more inclusive or exclusive.

Such a stupid decision whilst in the midst of a pandemic with some people rightly fearfula bout heading back out into crowded arenas.

i know there are ways round it with VPNs, but it's insane that the EFL are doing this

Don't think you can actually?
For games unavailable in the UK you have to pay with a credit/debit card registered to an overseas address (found this out whilst on holiday in Greece a few years back).
It also seems to recognise my VPN provider (NordVPN) because whenever I forgot to switch it off last season it blocked access to iFollow conent.

Rumour has it you can just put in your UK address and rather than sticking UK as the country you can choose a different one and the payment will go through anyway

EFL gates have gone up in the 21st Century though.

The last time it was challenged legally (2011), the ECJ judge was pretty dismissive of the effect it had on in-person gates:

"It is, in fact, doubtful whether closed periods are capable of encouraging attendance at matches and participation in matches. Both activities have a completely different quality to the following of a live transmission on television. It has not been adequately shown to the Court that the closed periods actually encourage attendance at and participation in matches. Indeed, there is evidence to refute this claim: for example, in an investigation of the closed periods under competition law the Commission found that only 10 of 22 associations had actually adopted a closed period. No closed periods were adopted in France, Germany, Italy and Spain, or in Northern Ireland, that is to say, within the sphere of influence of English football."

It is if you're the sort of gatekeeping elitist superfan who thinks that excluding people from overseas/long distance, the disabled and elderly from watching Town is a good thing.

That was very rare, doubt it is even a thing any more - but was just if tickets hadn't sold so stadium would be empty. If tickets got to a certain percentage of capacity then local blackout would be lifted

Seems fair

My 12 year old nephew pays what he would for his ticket, and half a dozen sit in his dads lounge watching the game

I can normally justify watching a Saturday game on iFollow as Madge goes for a nap around 3pm lol.

Really enjoyed watching the games on the laptop hooked up to the TV. Getting to games - especially home games - is just not really feasible for me.

Guess it's time to try the VPN's.

Pretty dumb decision as it will be harsh on people that either are too worried to go to the game or have to self isolate.

You would have thought they would at least make exceptions for people that need to self isolate and have season tickets.

Because those wanting to watch the stream were unlikely to go to the game in the first place?
