It's a funny thing in football. I don't consider that we had it going into the new season as we had a 3 month break. I accept that the win on sunday however gave us quite a bit back but does tonight count towards it or not?

A win and a good performance tonight, will give us as fans, and our first choice matchday squad, a lot of confidence, in knowing that we've got back up players that can come in and do a job.
It will also show, that those players used, are taking everything on board, from the management and coaches. And showing a good attitude.
The League Cup itself, is not important to me, personally. But it's a chance to really see how deep our squad is.
I think any win counts as momentum. Even the pre season games, against decent opposition in Innsbruck.
It gives belief to players, that what we are doing under KM, is working.. And galvanises the squad, as a group, if a supposed second string can step in and perform at a similar level... |  | | |

Given other than Hutchinson’s cameo, the players were all here last season, Sunday was massive as confirmation of the momentum from last season continuing. If Sunderland’s early dominance had turned into a chastening defeat it would have felt deflating.
I think Sunday was pretty perfect in that we got maintain the feel good factor from last season and also got a bit of a wake up call in terms of what we need to improve. Oh and the 3 points is pretty handy too. |  | | |

Lungo was immense against Sunderland. I can't believe that he's in the bottom half of our outfield players in terms of ratings on here (5 players ahead of him). For me, he was our MOTM, although I appreciate there were a number of very decent performances across the side, and Broadhead's contribution justifiably got him into team of the week. However, although I love Morsy, I think Luongo was the standout CM at the weekend. |  | | |

Definitely think it has lasted over the summer — it’s on and off the pitch. Plus our ambitions and expectations haven’t exactly gone backwards these past months.
Sunderland was a test (and we arguably got a little lucky) but it was still a very good away performance against a Championship promotion rival.
So even if we want to see momentum purely in playing terms, it looked like we started where we left off last season. And no coincidence that it was essentially the core team from last year minus Walton that got the result. |  |

I think momentum is essential in football, lost count of the number of times we have played a weakened team in a cup game and lost it entirely.
I get the strategy of giving squad members a game, but think we should think twice about an all out second eleven tonight.
Who knows - if we are a top 10 championship team (which we are) we could even win the bloody thing!!
