France still not on the red list 09:44 - Apr 1 with 2193 views | StokieBlue | It seems incredible to me that the government are stalling on this. The French had 60000 cases yesterday of which up to 10% could have been the SA variant. They are closing their schools today to try and stop the spread. It seems bizarre to make such an effort to stop the variant entering the UK from other countries but to not add France to the red list of countries. On a different note, this is an interesting and worrying article about the medium-term effect of C19 on some people: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/apr/01/almost-third-of-uk-covid-hospital- SB

If we make their hauliers quarantine for 10 days its inevitable that there might be a blockade of the channel ports. But, I don't see how much longer we can keep the border open without creating a real risk to the UK population

Surely testing Lorry drivers on arrival would work. Most sleep and eat in their cabs in any case. Does seem ridiculous to not have any checks on them given the rates highlighted in the OP. Alternatively cross border (Ferry/tunnel) trade would need to switch container ships. Am guessing there's not that much spare capacity?

No idea, I'm sure others have a better handle on all that stuff but with regard to closing borders but protecting trade, the UK Govt have only one plan. a) Keep them open. I'm sure the Irish border also causes a problem. Unless the ROI close their border to mainland Europe, then with the peace accord, there is still a route into the UK, through Ireland and Northern Ireland from both France and Spain.

Hauliers are to be tested as of next week. Foreign travel is currently banned unless for essential reasons so it’s not as if we are all going to be jetting off to Paris on EasyJet fir the Easter hols. 75% of our imports come through France. To ban them could cause real problems for our supplies. And as somebody already posted, Macron would reciprocate.

Foreign travel is banned for us but I believe the French can still come here without quarantining in a hotel (just at home which isn't enough with the SA variant gaining strength there). Not sure that testing really helps. So as long as you are here for only 2 days you can bring in the SA variant, mix with people then leave again without a test. As for Macron, he's totally lost it. It looks like he's trying to hand the next election to Le Pen. SB

Freight has always been exempt from any bans and as you rightly point out the testing of drivers will be in next week. This however is about movement of people and a double standard being applied. 20-30% of new cases in France are the new SA variant which is the big worry. Countries with a fraction of that risk are currently on the red list, but we have decided to wait 2 weeks to reassess France. Hancock announced the 5th April date for them last week. And Stokie is right, the French can (well until the latest lockdown their side), come to the UK without any quarantine. [Post edited 1 Apr 2021 10:44]

Not up to your usual standard. Around 50% of all imports are from the EU it is pure fantasy to suggest half the remainder, which would include oil, reaches these shores via France. MTH.

France still not on the red list on 19:49 - Apr 2 with 1729 views | StokieBlue | So more countries added to the red list today but still not France which is utter madness. Some experts are not impressed: “It is bonkers,” said Gabriel Scally, a visiting professor of public health at the University of Bristol and a member of the Independent Sage committee, adding that everyone entering the country should go into hotel quarantine. “The biggest risks are from countries on our doorstep where the virus is engaged in exponential growth, it is out of control, and France is definitely one of them.” He added: “The only thing that is saving the UK at the moment is the high levels of vaccination — but the government is putting all that progress at risk by having a public health policy on our borders that is a leaky sieve.” SB

The Government were advised to put France on the red list over a week ago by those that also concluded the four countries today should be added. It is very much political over health right now. Lets see what Boris says on Monday, which is when they have promised an update on France.

I know you probably won't agree but I think we should let the RAF loose and exercise a significant air attack on France. Macron is starting to get on my goat.

Go back to RoRo as the primary means of cross channel haulage, as a temporary solution until things improve. It worked in the 70's 80, & 90's granted there wasn't as much traffic as there is now, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

France still not on the red list on 07:47 - Apr 15 with 1324 views | StokieBlue | Whilst there is no evidence that it's come from France, the SA variant is now in at least 4 London boroughs. Better border controls could have gone a long way to have prevented this. The SA variant has quite a large effect on the effectiveness of antibodies from other C19 infections or the current vaccines.
