Ocean freight 10:10 - Oct 4 with 1064 viewsclive_baker

Blimey, prices are in free fall. Not something we tend to do very often, last time we got a quote was in Jan '22 and it was £18k, so held off on the launch. We've just been quoted £2,900 for the same container / route (China > UK). That's pretty much back to pre-Covid prices.

Have they now found a way of getting boxes back to China or is there over supply due to tightening demand from western economies?

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Youd better let Lucan know - he's been pretty animated about freight costs recently

Prices will level out around pre Covid for a while and may even drop below pre Covid prices within 24 months. There are lots of new builds ordered by the large lines and they will launch over the next 2 years, so there will be over capacity in the market, likely exacerbated by falling consumer demand if recessions last globally. The big boys (Maersk, MSc etc) also have massive cash surpluses, so will be able to take the rates plunging for a while yet. Now isn’t the time to tie into long term freight contracts with the shipping lines. Boring post over!

Certainly a reduction in demand in Western economies, but also an element of overstocks in the market driven by both that, but also lots of people getting excess stock into the country before Brexit (which itself drove up prices).
