People you thought were mates but turned out not to be. 13:15 - Feb 7 with 876 viewsMattinLondon

Years ago when I moved to London I used to live in a shared house where one of my ‘mates’ had the rental in his name. We knew that he took on this responsibility and due to this had a slightly lower rent than the rest of us and we were ok with this. I later found out that he had lied how much the rental was, was living ‘rent free’ and was actually making a profit which annoyed me.

Later on, by all accounts, he got a lot worse and padlocked the boiler room outside so that he was the only one who could adjust the heating. This morning someone who I lost contact with (but used to share with) got in touch. He told me that ‘Rich’ went away over lockdown to Mexico and whilst there one of the housemates took off the padlock and turned the heating up and then informed the tax people of what has been going on for years. Apparently they then all moved out and stopped their rents to him.

So now ‘Rich’ is being investigated by the tax authorities and had a huge energy bill.

Just wondered if anyone else has heard of someone they’ve known getting what they really do deserve years later?

*Rich isn’t his real name but he is a dick.

Edited due to a name mistake.

I know a few people who did the first bit in London, although perhaps not profiting. As well as probably being a breach of contract (sub letting), it felt a little immoral to me. Of course they were inheriting a certain level of risk with a tenancy in their name, and others who wanted perhaps more of a fluid agreement were happy to pay a premium for their rent. My friend lived in a 3 bed in Clapham for about 4 years. It was £1,500 per month at the time and he sub-let both of the other bedrooms for £750 each so all he paid was his share of the bills. I'm not sure what the market is like now in terms of Covid, WFH and the supposed London exodus that I've read about (no idea if it's true), but this was 7 or 8 years ago when it was mad demand for rooms in nice areas.
