The worst thing is that we have got so close this season and could have done it. There are so many variables with starting again from game 1 next season. Just hope this wasn't our best chance.

We should have sacked Cook a month earlier.
I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Agreed. Its not a given that starting again in August will yield this seasons second half results.
So frustrating that 79-80 points is what will be required this season and we will almost certainly fall short.
Even allowing for Cook we have been undone by a lack of fire power and the incessant Sh!thousery of league 1. Something that will still be there to great us next season. Yes things are positive but nothing guaranteed.

The sh1thousing will certainly be there. We probably won't have 3 out of our four current strikers on the books though.

history only describes what happens from the winners point of view. You and many others were calling for him to be sacked early. I remember the days when there were calls for Sir Bobby to be sacked, and what would have happened then? It was during the Barrow game that I finally became convinced PC had to go, and was happy that MA acted then. With hindsight, if he had gone a month earlier, maybe we would be in the playoffs now. History eh.

Have we got so close? No reflection on McKenna at all of course but we've not been in the top 6 once this season, we've beaten none of the current top 7 (in 11 attempts), we're 9th. We're closer points wise to 18th place than top. I think it's a stretch to say we've been any way close to getting out of League 1 this season.

Absolutely, but for some reason only very few of us were calling for it then. There were a good number who were still actively positive about Cook's performance whilst casting Lambert as the devil, when in reality Lambert's results were better than Cook's, with far less money to spend. Not hankering after Lambert's era by any stretch, but unless it was Cook's cheeky chappy persona that won so many over, I can't for the life of me work out what it was.
The McKenna appointment was obviously great. I am highly confident of top six next year, and we should see top two as being the obvious target. Let's hope KMac can be as effective in the transfer market as "on the grass".

I love the Sir Bobby comparison whenever the subject of sacking crap Ipswich manager comes up.
Sir Bobby was a novice manager with less than 40 games as a manager under his belt, managing a club with a limited budget in an entirely different era of football,
Our past two managers came in with hundreds of games under their belts and were(to a greater or lesser extent) two generously backed with one of the highest(if not the highest) budgets in the division and failed, badly.
The warning signs with Cook were there last season when he chucked a whole squad(that he'd taken from the verge of the playoffs to mid table anonymity) under the bus rather ha actually try and coach and motivate his players.

Agreed . But there were several players in last year's squad that weren't good enough/too old/legacy from MM and so a certain degree of clearing out was definitely needed - but not to the extent of the bomb squad. However it can be in little doubt that we now have several players who are significant upgrades on the 20/21 squad. KM has benefitted from the players that PC brought in (or was it that MA brought in? - interesting further discussion point). But even PC - and in no way am I defending him - managed to see something in JD who has established himself as one of the best defenders in the division. PC seemed to give up on the whole squad. Maybe we needed the funds from Downes/Dozza/Edwards to do the summer rebuild? Maybe they didn't want to stay? But it shows that KM has been able to instill confidence in the same (new) squad that PC had, and coach them to completely transform the style of play - it is still work in progress, and I just hope we can keep the best players and improve in a couple of areas for next season.

I saw some straws in the distance. I ran towards them ready to clutch them....
....and you took them all away.
There's always next season.
Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?
