Now it's official you can go on long walks 18:25 - Apr 16 with 5566 viewsbluelagos

and drive to get to them, the attached may of use. Loads of local walks from 2-3 miles to all-dayers (12-15 miles)

Be sure to start at an appropriate length and to take enough food and water as any cafes/pubs are going to be shut.

If you need a map - there's loads you can use on your phone including ordinance survey. I like MapsMe too - log where you start so you can always get back if you get lost.

And trust me - these walks are empty. I did the Shotley one yesterday and saw about 6 people all day.

Meanwhile the numbers in the west country, where people like me have moaned about people being too relaxed about all this social distancing stuff....

keep creeping up when they ought to be dropping.

Number of CV cases?

If you think that is down to people walking on footpaths perhaps you could provide some evidence for that Bully?

It cant be transferred between people not coming into contact.

In London, when population is very dense, the numbers are clearly dropping now. Not the case everywhere else.

Where are the regional trends published?

btw I'm pretty sure there aren't very many epidemiologists out there who are too worried about people going for country walks!

Is that your evidence for walkers in the countryside contributing to the CV rises outside of London?

You seem determined to keep making posts encouraging people to push the limits of what constitutes responsible exercise.

If you want to travel to outdoor spaces where you can exercise then that's up to you but I don'y think you should keep encouraging and promoting others to do the same.

We are levelling out the numbers of deaths and new hospital admissions. The more people who then make unnecessary journeys to footpaths, parks, picnics etc will see that trend reversed.

I beg to differ Glassers. I think getting outside is positive and we should be encouraging people to do so.

For their well being, no more no less.

Edit: And am happy to add that they should of course be social distancing when they do so.

And I'd add, if people do go on country walks, there are of course far less people in the cities (where social distancing is much harder) - so in fact by so doing we are likely to reduce CV spread compared to exercising in crowded parks.

Not sure six people walking around Shotley is going to empty out London, or Ipswich, really.

what?

I am noting that too many have taken this in a lax manner around my way.

The figures in the south west continue to climb slowly- which ought not to happen if proper social distancing was in place.

Or perhaps spreading it from an epicentre to other places where it is not yet endemic.

Trouble is that an unnecessary journey can lead to an RTA or breakdown, which then involves contact with other people.

Gates will be touched by multiple people. And it can take the virus to an area where it hadn't reached by using the local sops, garages etc.

If you exercise in your own area then you are limiting the chances of a spread within your own community.

Im not suggesting people drive the length of the country!

Anyhow, dont think we are ever going to agree. You and Bully and a few others think going for a walk in the countryside could increase the spread of CV. I think it is an important way for people to help manage both their physical and mental health.

No real point in arguing the toss.

I really don't think we need to worry too much about such low risks - coronavirus is going to be with us for years, and we're going to have to learn to make sensible judgements about what we should and shouldn't be doing. That may as well start now.

At one point Seb didn’t want to ride his bike. He got it in March for his birthday. He loves it. He cleans with a bucket and sponge.

His mum had gotten him all worked up.

I went for a few bike rides including stopping off at his mums house so he could see me out and about.

He’s still wary. But I’m getting him out and about now. Playing more in the back yard too.

There’s no reason a bairn should have that anxiety.

I will keep taking him out, and due to the latest press release about exercise, I may just chuck our bikes in the car and drive him somewhere for an afternoon of riding in the country.

In Ireland we're confined to exercising within 2kms of our homes. The Gardai now have powers to fine people breaking the guidelines up to €2500 and 6 months in prison.

Now is not the time to be traveling any distance for a walk.

Why are people taking walks out in the countryside moaning about people taking a walk in the countryside?

It’s just the board Tory cheerers teeing up their argument that this all went wrong because of the public and not because of unclear and late government actions that included swerving on the plan.

Because that’s exactly what Johnson and Co want you to do. Why criticise us when you can become a spy to the state and grass up your neighbours?

Glassers and Sparks show up and shout at you I think.

I don’t see the harm if you’re with your own household and you’re sensible. If the lockdown is having the effect it should rural areas should be further out the woods than the cities by now if there’s been little to no cases.

That’s not to say go have a village picnic with all your friends and family. But I’d struggle to see the bother in my neighbours driving home up to a quiet forest outside Brandon for a walk as long as they’re sensible.

Being in Lakenheath RN I can tell you it’s quiet most days when I walk the dogs and pretty much everyone honours social distancing. I’ve seen and heard few exceptions.

You will struggle to justify a long drive for a short walk, but if you are not far and do go for a walk, then you should be fine.
