Yea they are overrated. Although perhaps that is because I live in Ipswich and live close to the coast anyway. Obviously i'm not comparing the Maldives to Felixstowe...but generally, a beach is a beach.

I'm not a huge fan of beaches but snorkelling in the pristine waters is unbelievably good and never gets boring in my opinion. SB

I just like to do things so sitting on my arse on a nice beach, I get bored after an hour or so. So two weeks on a costa or a caribbean get away is totally wasted on me.

So one time in California I stop at a beach for 10 mins and get chatting to a guy. He asks what I do, and I explain I am inbetween jobs, which I was. BL: So what do you do? Guy: I am a drug dealer. BL: Ah right, how's that going? Guy: Yeah, ok, but I do need some help bringing stuff in from overseas if you fancy some work. BL: You're ok thanks. Often wondered what it would have involved, how much I'd have made and what it's like inside a Texan prison if you get caught...

Of course he isn't. And that there's a tsunami forecast has absolutely nothing to do with recommendation and was a genuine oversight on his part. It does look pretty, you have to admit. I'm not one for sitting about on a beach either, it's dull. But I have had a lot of fun from the sea in the past.

SB, if you like snorkelling that much, you should try scuba diving. Stunning, especially in clear warm water like the Red Sea or Indian Ocean. Pretty good (although very different) in the UK's murky waters too.

A cousin of mine has spent much of his life diving off the Devon coast. Old wrecks, placing his own scallop pots etc. He ran a boat yard down there near Kingsbridge for years and the water was just fine. I have only done a resort dive off-shore a few miles from Queensland on the reef there, but that was a wonderful experience. Yes, it is something people really should try if/when they get the chance. *See also jumping out of an aircraft.

Afternoon. Indeed, I meant to do my PADI in Belize a couple of years but didn't for various reasons. Snorkelling can be fabulous though if the locations are good. For instance somewhere like the Maldives you can't really scuba because most of what you want to see is in the large lagoons and they are about 10-15ft deep at most so scuba would be overkill. The reefs in Belize were good as well but not a match on the Maldives which is unbelievable (depending on the island). I did manage to grab a video of eagle rays swimming past me there though which was nice. I would like to try the Red Sea but it's pretty much been off limits since the bombing of the plane in Sharm a few years back. I actually think scuba in UK waters would be excellent, quite a bit of cold water coral to see as well as lots of interesting critters. Lots of wrecks to dive in as well. SB

My nephew is a bit of a thrill seeker and sky dives for a living. He did some base jumping off the Millau bridge last summer which looked awesome. They don't do tandems though, I did ask :-)

I’d really love to do snorkelling/diving. It looks amazing. Since I remember the Jacques Cousteau programmes, I’m probably a bit too old for it but one can dream! Brilliant thing to do.

Wouldn't have thought anyone's too old for snorkelling tbf. Go somewhere they know what they're doing and you'll be fine.

I learnt a couple of years ago through a local BSAC (British Sub Aqua Club) club in Witham. Took a lot longer than PADI but the training was excellent. Qualified now down to 35 metres and also done some rescue training and Nitrox training. Did Malta, Greece and a Red Sea Liveaboard in 2019. Red Sea was superb. Last year could only dive in the UK but did spend 20 minutes at -20 meters with a friendly dolphin off of Portland. Give it a go and look up your local BSAC club - they prob cant do anything at the mo, but we shd be back in the water soon.
