Chelmsford City 1 Ipswich 3 1973 23:26 - Nov 27 with 5456 viewsburnbudgiesburn

Heard lots about this match over the years, but never seen the goals... some kind person just uploaded the match featured on the big match. (Ipswich at 36:30)

I went to New Writtle Street in the early 1990's to watch them play cambridge city after an Essex pre-season cricket match was washed out and it was shortly after condemned. I'm amazed 15k managed to fit in there, made Layer Road look like the San Siro.

And this might be sacrilege, but Gerry Harrison wasn't that great a commentator was he? As a youngster he was the voice of Ipswich football, but looking back. Crikey.

Nice find. Now someone needs to find the goals from Southampton away, FA Cup 3rd round, January 1991. We lost 3-2. Nowhere to be seen on YouTube

Excellent find as I was there as a 'feisty' 18 year old Town fan and it's soon coming up for its 50th anniversary early next year! Clouds of time has fogged my memory but pretty sure I can recall Harpers opening goal away to my left which would put me and my group to the right of the camera stand. Way back then I enjoyed Gerrys commentary, but really didn't appear to be much else to compare with Anglia wise!

That Dozzell opener at our end was pure limbs, as they say. Would like to see that again.

Few questions for the older posters.

Coverage switching from colour to black and white midmatch. Was that regular? Down to the fading light to help the viewer?

That was a LWT production, know Itv was regional back then. Did each local company produce it's own "Big match" or was the same versiom broadcast nationally?

I was at the game, but we didn't have a colour TV in those days, so everything was black and white for me.

This was the FA Cup which may explain the LWT production but Anglia TV normally featured league games in East Anglia, which for one season at least included games from Hull. Gerry Harrison was the commentator.

I had to admire Mick Mills part in the third goal. A lovely forward pass, which all stemmed from his wonderful posture. Ramrod straight back like a sergeant-major. Beautiful to behold.

This gives a full description of how televised football came about in East Anglia.

https://twohundredpercent.net/televised-football-regions-anglia-punching-above-w

I had no idea that the model of the knight Anglia tv had, and will be familiar to decrepits like me, was thought to be a model of Robert the Bruce?!

The switch to colour didn’t make much difference to us - we had black and white until about 1973. Seems odd but nobody thought anything of it. The picture was the thing and most of those were rubbish. My grandparents had one of the first colour TVs in a nice wooden case to disguise it and while it was a marvel, the colours were way off reality.

Gerry Harrison? He sounds a bit rubbish now, but he was a familiar voice I grew up with so it was ok. The camera angles were desperately limited by todays standards, but again, it was all developing.

You knew if Match of the Day were showing the game thanks to the Cherry Picker looming over the back of Churchmans. Happy memories.

Yes, a very under-rated player in some ways. I think these days he would be regarded much more highly, given his poise and the fact he could also play in midfield.

You could be right. To be honest, I don't remember much about the game, but I do remember a fair bit of trouble, including seeing damaged cars which had been trampled over. There must have been several thousand Ipswich fans there.

Same. I vaguely recall seeing the goals on match of the day but would absolutely love to see that packed, oddly-shaped away end erupt. Might have to venture on to a Saints message board and ask for help.

Can't remember hearing any official figures but it was a hell of a turnout that day. That away end was an uncovered version of the old North Stand with three pens. We already had the end two and the Town faces just kept coming. In the end, they booted Saints out of their own section and we had all three pens, including some infiltrators in the side stands.
Can remember a fight spilling out on to the pitch following that first goal.

Yes, down to the light. Someone once told me that the early colour technology didn't cope with poorer light and I imagine Chelmsford had fairly weak floodlights by current standards.

There was a commotion up in the seats when we scored. Think that got mentioned in the Sunday papers match report.

It’s funny how council estate pub works so well as a description. Immediately brings to mind Maidenhall’s Smock. Flat roof, couple of tape-repaired windows, England flags flying, few bits of broken glass in the car park. Puddle of days-old puke off to the side. Bring me home!

Yes, each local ITV company had its own Sunday football programme. Anglia's was Match of the Week, The Big Match was LWT, and from memory Central (covering the Midlands) had Star Soccer. Granada (north west), Tyne Tees, etc would all have had their own too. I'm pretty sure that on Match of the Week the commentator (usually Gerry Harrison) would interview the home manager early in the second half while play was going on. Presumably by the law of averages there must have been at least one occasion when a goal went in while said manager was speaking.

That was because of a few from Sudbury who were in the Southampton seats and it spilled onto the pitch.

Yes, then TV coverage games at some stadiums switched to black & white in the second half if the flodlights weren't up to much.

I was working for Essex CC in Chelmsford at the time so life was rather fraught in the office so massive relief at the result. The early goal settled things down. Chelmsford scored late on and with that one of their supporters had a heart attack in the main stand from which he failed to recover.
New Writtle Street was a typical old type football stadium in the centre of town. Unfortunately they owned that they were badly run and spent several seasons plying their trade away from Chelmsford.

Didn't that happen to Bobby Robson? I have a recollection of a grumpy Bobby Robson saying 'thanks for that Gerry' having missed a goal whilst being interviewed on the sidelines.
