Ahhh John Lyall. What a man. Let’s hope you’re right Glassers.

I don't understand that comment. My recollection of John Lyall's tenure is that he came to Ipswich to retire after his successful career at WH. He couldn't wait to hand over the reins to his assistant who was a disaster.

Lyalls team played great football,he had a track record for it. Not sure where Harris fits with that.

Worked a lot of the time. Bang it up to Whitton and win the second ball. Play the game in their half.

None of this playing out from the back malarkey.

He came to us when we were mid table and underperforming in a league we had been stuck in for three seasons. He wasn’t the flashy or sexy appointment that fans were wanting at the time.

He worked with that same group of players and got us promoted.

Even though, I'm sure, David Linighan, was desperate to unleash his inner Beckenbauer

If he does he won't last long.

Lyall finished 14th in his first season following on from John Duncans 9th that saw him sacked.

I recall the long ball onto Steve Whitton's head very well, but in my mind it is David Linighan doing it rather than Craig. I don't think Craig was a great long kicker.

He could't make it past Geraint Williams. He would have to take the long way round.

I see more similarities with Joe Royle to be honest. At his best Harris probably plays a similar style of football (direct, attacking) and while experienced probably doesn't have the gravitas (is that quite the right word?) of Joe. My biggest concern if it is Harris is we'll need a lot of new players, it's seems to me, to adjust from to Cook to him at a time we probably just want someone to make this (we hope) good set of players a team.

Our promotion under Lyall remains the clubs greatest achievement. To do what he did with no money and no new players and indeed many players who really weren’t that good and had just trundled along for a few seasons by then, in the face of all the money Blackburn Derby and Newcastle were spending, was amazing.

I've tried to look at that season in hindsight, because it was such an improvement on the year before. I guess the signings of Goddard and Whitton were key but I'd suggest a bit of luck with injuries (the only one i recall really is the Linighan one for the run in) meant we kept a pretty stable 11. It seems everything came together and I guess that rolled on for the first half of the season after.

Whitton was one of our best players Goddard less so. Dozzell and Kiwomya were up front during the best periods. That team is the greatest example of the essence of Ipswich Town; a core of youth players and cheap buys with a sprinkling of inspired experienced signings, of course helped by the greatest player in our history. A team worth so much more than the sum of its parts and playing the big boys off the park. Such a shame it’s all gone now.

Lyall was a far sexier appointment than Harris would be. I just don't see any comparisons between the two, football-wise.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Sir Alf may disagree.

Not saying it wasn't a great achievement, but to go 3rd Division (South) to 2nd Division to 1st Division Champions definitely trumps it!
