10 is probably a bit punchy but 8 out wouldn't surprise me. There's some very obvious suspects like Keogh, KVY, Aluko, Penney, Coleman who are all out of contract and will likely leave. Evans, Pigott, Jackson, Harper going into their final year. Wouldn't be surprised of 2 or 3 of them leave. Presume we would be open to interest in Ahadme and Harness too. From the whispers I've heard we're going to be pretty aggressive in the market if we get into the Championship. The ambition is higher than perhaps people dare to believe.

I think you're probably not far off there. Some of them might just be loans out but yeah, more or less can see that departure list. I do think we will almost certainly see Luongo back here next season though.

Kudos to El Miz… he’s coming home on 08:01 - Apr 24 by Daninthecampo | If we go up i expect we'll buy another CM so unless El Miz has dramatically improved I can't see how he gets in the matchday squad Camara's game is totally different to morsy/luongo which has worked really well, maybe Mck will push him further forward as backup for Chaplin/Broadhead? |
I can see Camara being an alternative to Broadhead. He was bought to be the player able to take the ball 30-40 yards so we can play in their 3rd of the pitch, which is what Broadhead now offers. What do you then do with Edwards? Not sure about Camara and Broadhead in the same team. What has been so good about Luongo is how he covers the space Broadhead leaves behind.

Kudos to El Miz… he’s coming home on 00:58 - Apr 24 by BondiBlue | You do wonder about evans. Brilliant for the first ten games BUT mckenna spent 500k on another CM on deadline day and i'm not sure evans fits mckenna's apparent preference for energetic midfielders who can press. If camara had been fit at any point this season, you'd assume he'd have been first choice (or 2nd behind morsy obviously). Now we also have luongo who's undroppable and surely has to be signed up for next season. Pecking order at the moment therefore is something like: 1 morsy 2 luongo 3 camara 4 evans 5 ball 6 humphreys 7 el mizouni 8 harper If we sign taylor that surely puts evans 5th choice. Big question mark over ball if that were to happen, although mckenna clearly likes him. Either way, 8 midfielders is mad so you'd imagine at least 3 would leave permanently or on loan. |
As much as I like Luongo his injury history and tbf the rest of our midfield injuries this year, probably means that sort of back is going to be required. Unless we sign a new midfielder that blows them all out of the water and Luongo becomes backup.

At what point do we factor in unwanted departures? Walton to someone like Burnley or Southampton as their reliable backup for a few bob. Woolfenden to Palace for 9 million Edwards to someone like Hull for 2 million

I would be very surprised if all of the following aren't starting next season in our first XI: Walton Clarke Woolfenden Davis Morsy Chaplin Broadhead That's six players right off the bat, and I think Burns has a greater than 50% chance of starting the season in the first XI too given how well he fits McKenna's system. Wouldn't be a huge surprise if Burgess was in there, although I think we'll upgrade or reinforce at CB in the summer. If we sign Hirst permanently you can probably add him to the list of starters as well.

I think it will be heavy investment in quality through the core. CB, CM and CF (hopefully Hirst but if not then someone else of high quality). That's assuming we go up of course. SB

I wouldn't be surprised if we sent Camara out until January to get regular game time, unless he looks to be absolutely flying in preseason. Five senior CMs feels like a lot for two starting positions and one on the bench, although with the injuries we've had this season we've needed that kind of depth.

Walton's spoken about the importance of getting regular football in a settled environment after spending so long as a back up at Brighton and out on loan so I don't think that sort of move would appeal. He's reportedly our highest earner anyway, so once you add in a probable promotion bonus, being the back up somewhere like Burnley might not even give him a pay increase. On Woolfenden, I doubt anybody will spend £9m on a 24-year-old defender who's never played 90 minutes above League One. If we go up and he adapts well, he's got the attributes to be of interest to Premier League teams but I think they'll want at least a season's worth of evidence that he's capable of playing in the Championship before chucking that kind of money at us. Edwards is a more realistic departure. Fingers crossed he sticks around though because the chaos he injects into games off the bench is brilliant and he seems like a good character to have around the squad. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of Edmundson or Burgess leave if we go up. I think they'd both be capable deputies in the Championship but not sure they'd be starters and having two back ups for that position might be excessive. Burgess has been the better player this season but Edmundson's ceiling is higher so which would be sold isn't clear.

Those were just hypotheticals. My point is, no one seems to be contemplating losing a player we consider to be integral to the team. Edmundson and Burgess we can live without. With all the best will in the world, if someone came in and offered Walton £30k a week to be a backup, he would be off like a shot. And I can't believe, given our defensive record and Woolfenden's part in passing out from the back, he isn't on someones wipeboard for possible summer signings. [Post edited 24 Apr 2023 14:22]

If we do end up in the Championship, Evans and Ball may be moved on for my dynamic, technical player suited to playing at that level. Great to have such dilemas |
Ball's ability to play centre back plays in his favour there I'd say.

Fair play. I think the most likely unwanted departure would probably be Davis or Clarke, with both having been at Premier League clubs recently and at an age where there’s a good chance they can return to that level eventually.

Which 7? Of your list, only Evans, Edwards and Hirst make the matchday 18 when fit, TJJ was as well but whether he would now is less certain. Also doesn't sit right to call loanees departures as they were never a permanent squad member to begin with. [Post edited 24 Apr 2023 15:26]
