Exactly the type of player we'll be targeting going forward.

22yrs old, Prem experience but hasn't nailed down a place but can obviously play. It will def be a loan with a view to buy. Here's a player that has the 'potential' to turn a profit whist contributing within McKenna's system.

Could be another shrewd piece of business from Town here.

As an aside, he plays right back as well as left back. So gives us additional cover on both sides given Clarke's ongoing injury issue.

Not sure we can go overboard on shrewdness here. This is the type of player that pretty much every club outside the elite target.

The way the academy system has developed nationally, with big clubs hoarding young players, means that a huge percentage of footballers in the EFL are drop downs from the Premier League. It's pretty much the default recruiting pool for clubs in our division and below.

But surely this is the type of player recruitment we could only dream about 18/12 ago? Before Gamechanger came along we were looking for ageing journeymen ( certainly under McCarthys reign), and not even that under Lambert, Cook et al. I agree with OP we are in effect using the Billy big bollox PL clubs academies to improve our player stock. Quality funny given they have cherry picked our best talent for years for sod all fee. Yes we will pay a fee to them, but it’s probably cheaper than the years of development at our academy from a 9yr old. Williams has PL experience, and is good to go now, isn’t he and If he does well, his value increases, to us.

Curious. A serial failure coming to the end of his contract joins a bloated Championship squad as a benchwarmer? Other than the manager’s penchant for kicking Donacien in the teeth this looks like a straight swap of one unwanted signing with yet another.

Not much to get excited about here - but I guess he could try his luck at Oxford when his contract runs out.

I think the point in the OP about Clarke's on-going injury problem is pretty pertinent.

A signing of this quality allows Clarke to go under the knife, rather than 'managing' his injury and nursing him through to the Jan window. (An assumption on my part that this is required, but the talk over the summer suggests this might be the best course of action)

Davis is the first name on the teamsheet, but that right hand side is up for grabs. Williams' versatility allows us to let Leigh leave, Clarke to have a spell on the treatment table and still have Davis, Janoi, Williams and Ball as four good fullback options.

Looks pretty shrewd business to me and the sort of signing that has served us well in recent seasons - essentially plucking players from the division above who can help to take us another step forwards in our journey.

I'm all for this one and excited at the prospect of Williams and Davis bombing forward on either flank!

Absolutely supreme! One of yer best yet. Though you could have just said you don't like him cause he hates Norwich

No idea what he posted, but I suspect that this one has caused an even higher level than normal of pachydermic perturbation given this player's history.

I hate to inform you that we're not going to be able to reanimate the Cobbolds from the dead, nor will Snickers be rebranding to Marathon any time soon. As romantic as your ideas are for the past, they would be a one way ticket to failure. But hey ho, lets talk horse sh*t about McKenna's treatment of Donacien or a player who isn't even on the books yet.

I know you're not a budgie which makes it awful to realise that a town fan could be miles worse than one.

Curious. You offer nothing constructive, there's playing devil's advocate and then there's your ill thought out prodding of everything related to the club as being negative, even though all aspects of what is happening is seemingly on an upward curve (not sustainable forever I know) and a million miles away from what's been served the last decade plus.

Not my site, but i'd have you banned. You're not funny and you offer nothing.

Well, I suppose it depends on why others are/aren't interested really!

For me, "shrewd" would imply that we've spotted something other clubs haven't or made a wise decision that might pass others by. Not sure Williams' availability will have gone under anyone's radar.

Allegedly.

Out of interest, how would you like to see the club run? Because you seem to rejoice is slagging off everyone involved but don’t put any constructive ideas forward on how it can progress in this modern era?

Just been on the phone to a client who's a season ticket holder at Norwich, he brought up Williams and said that in a pretty dire season in the Prem' he was the one shining light, really quick and stood out.

Surprised to seem potentially drop to Championship level given what he and a number of others saw. Would not want to seem him running at Norwich if we got him.

That's as much as I now know about the player. He's pretty pragmatic, so would assume the lad is half decent.

No doubt Leeds will now get him instead.

Just run this past my Utd supporting pal. Sings the lad's praises and says it will be a brilliant signing for us if it comes off. Old fashioned, no nonsense style of full back. Will snuff out trouble by whatever means on the pitch. Comes from a Manc family of boxers and it comes out in him on the pitch. The downside for us is that he sounds like a yellow and red card collector. He's apparently not going to make the United first team hence being shown the door. The McKenna connection might be the deciding factor if we do want the lad...

I agree it will be a good signing and with his age it. Old be good business.

I think the 'model' that we and a lot of others is more identifying less well known players cheap (including wages etc), developing them and selling for more.

I guess it will depend what we end up paying for Williams. He's still only 22 so a strong season or 2 would see growth in price. Hopefully we've agreed a price now and won't have to be inflated price based on a good season.
